  1. Win #899 for Coach Sutherland. Next win will be #900. Very elite status this man walks among.

This is the most truth I’ve heard. I’ll add parents/community to the mix too (which equates to tolerance, support and spending). To think good coaching is all it takes has never coached at that level.

This stuff isn’t that hard…reality is that you need both, coaching and talent…too many folks live in a world of absolutes, saying “it’s all the kids” or “it’s all the coaching “ when neither is true…great coaches have bad years and talented teams fail to meet expectations all the time il assure you this, there ain’t many no talent teams winning championships but plenty of very talented ones who have success, but don’t win the whole thing

  6. From the guy who pretends to pay six figures a year in taxes. So you think that a person should be entitled to: 1. a few thousand dollars a year in the form of a tax handout. 2. Free food for the course of their natural life via foodstamps 3. Free healthcare (up to and including abortion on demand regardless of ability to pay) for life 4. Absolution of all college debt and free college for all from now on. 5. NICE housing from cradle to grave, with no contribution from the tenant 6. Reparations for all black people, regardless of their affiliation with slavery 7. A free smart phone w/data plan 8. EBT plans for those expenses not covered by SNAP/WIC You know who never supports gross handouts to those who make poor choices? Rich people. You'll need to bump your imaginary tax payments to 10 figures, sir. What y'all want is impossible, regardless of how much you tax the 1%.

  7. Kinda like Katie Hobbs who was critical of her Republican predecessor for busing migrants out of state, but now that she's governor, seems to like the idea. Solutions to problems are easy to criticize until it becomes your problem to deal with, especially this one in a border state.

  8. Great point.. but it doesn't make sense to pretend that the idea is anything other than what it is.. idiotic. Even coaches on his own list of elite coaches were proven do have mediocre or poor seasons after winning their 2nd+ state title.

I'm curious if you don't win in your seven years and get fired, does that make you ineligible to get hired somewhere else? It kinda seems like you're outkicking the coverage on this one. For every coach who ever wins a state championship there are dozens who never will. Not sure how you can keep firing really good coaches in the hopes of finding an elite coach when by Reagan's standards, there are less than 10-15 "elite" coaches at any given time roaming the sidelines of Texas football stadiums, while there are over 1500 high school football teams in the state.

  10. This might actually be my favorite thing going on right now. It's hilarious to see the effect that an overabundance of illegal immigrants has had on these liberal sanctuary cities who normally criticize any effort made by border states to keep them out. It's pretty hilarious how quickly that attitude changes from "it's your problem, deal with it" to "we need the government to help us right now!"

  12. Lol... Bull. When I'm broke, do I buy more junk food? Nah, it's time for rice and beans, etc... Everybody knows that food stamps (SNAP, EBT) gives a person way more money to spend than they'd have as a person who buys their own groceries. Isn't it crazy how since the dawn of time, if humans or animals don't have enough to eat, they get skinny... except in America they get fatter. You're not that stupid, you're just lying.

  13. First of all, the names I mentioned aren't exceptions to the rule. They also represent a few of many that had great success and then average or below average seasons after at some point. Even the Great G.A. Moore had some somewhat mediocre seasons mixed in between those title runs. His last year as a head coach was a losing season. And you're talking about schools that are powers either beforehand or since said coach left. Celina, Pilot Point, suburb Austin, Aledo.. are you serious? Areas of the state that have gone through the most substantial transformations of wealth/growth over the last couple decades anywhere. Same thing happened in the Beaumont area during the oil boom. And the Permian Basin area during that oil boom. I will never not give credit to CT for how he handled WOS prior to the current coach.. but I think it had to do with player management more than anything (a coaching quality no doubt). Because I was told that this year's WOS team had players walking off the field during games, insanely poor attitudes, etc. And that might just be the main difference, because like you said and I agree with.. same kids, different coach. But I don't attribute that to coaching ability (Xs and Os) as much as I do player management. Time will tell with all of that. PNG- same sentiment. Time will tell. This was a great year for them but they're losing a bunch of seniors. How confident are you that they'll repeat or somewhat repeat the level of success they had this year? I personally think Phil Danaher and Tim Buchanan have a very similar qualification to be hired. Buchanan has an unprecedented 8 state titles... but, at a school with 3 state titles during that same time period when he wasn't head coach. And almost his entire career was spent at Aledo. Danaher may not have rings but he has a lot of success at 3 different schools that didn't have anywhere near that level of success without him. Like I said.. being an elite coach doesn't JUST mean winning state titles. I'm not gonna sway on that. You're obviously not going to sway on your opinion. It is what it is. There isn't a coach you named that could EVER win a state championship at countless school across the state right now or within 7 years of now. I'll bet every dollar I've ever made or will ever make on that. Coincidentally, there are a ton of great coaches right now that could have similar levels of success right now or within 7 years at some schools across the state.

  14. That is out of control people who likely should never have been officers. They exist. I wonder what selection criteria they used to put extremely young (in experience) officers in that position. This wasn’t patrol officers. It was a special unit probably to stop violent crime, probably by profiling. Was it based on “their” community which is what I have seen enough times… do they look like us? At times young officers are needed but they should be mixed with more senior officers. I don’t know if it is true but I heard that these officers were between two and five years in experience. What was their mission? What parameters were they given? This was not only a violent crime but a failure in leadership. I doubt this was 5 officers with no issues and no valid use of force complaints who all collectively lost it on this one incident because a guy ran. I have been in and initiated many foot chases and have never seen officers do that. I was driving (as the commander of a street crimes unit just like this) with another officer about 15 years ago. There was a call of an armed (aggravated) robbery at gun point…. of a police officer’s wife. We spotted the suspect and were in an unmarked vehicle. We jumped out on him and he fled on foot. The suspect was supposed to have a pistol on him but we didn’t see it in his hand but certainly he could have pulled one out and shot within a couple of seconds. (We had an officer shot in that exact situation who still has the bullet in him) This was not just a traffic stop we were on. It was a potential deadly force situation with a violent felony suspect who we had probable cause to believe was armed. We tackled him and he went to the ground face first but put his arms under his body. Was he going for a gun? My partner and I called for help (probably more like screamed in the radio 😂) and held on to both arms to try and keep him from pulling out a weapon. Yes it was pretty intense. Were we justified in using more force? Probably. A minute or so later two officers over 6’ tall and over 250 pounds each got there. Each one latched onto an arm and pulled them out like pulling apart a wishbone. He had no gun on him and apparently had stashed it. But… the probable cause was there to believe that he was armed after committing a violent crime and we actually knew the victim personally. If there was any justification to understand losing control of emotions, that might certainly be understandable in the eyes of many people. However, all that happened to the guy was that he was tackled and handcuffed. How to justify that much anger because a guy fled doesn't seem rational. Angry? Sure but this was out of control. Emotionally anyone involved including civilians would want to rough this guy up. This wasn’t a bar fight. imo…….

  15. I’d feel a lot better if they were working 40 hours a week at minimum wage. Many work part time or not at all. To me the free housing, food stamps, WIC, free phones, free health care, etc. etc. etc. is more than enough for your back door minimum wage increase. I think it’s obvious that I’m not your typical extreme conservative that you see on the board, but I’ve had enough up close exposure to the obscene amount of handouts given to able bodied people who refuse to work that I do have a very conservative view on this particular issue.

I’m amazed (not really) how working class and poor people continue fighting the ultra poors meanwhile the ultra wealthy and politically connected continue increasing the wealth disparity to record levels. Kicking a single mom of 4 kids (yes, she probably made stupid life decisions) off food stamps is in no way going to improve your own life. You guys have a small town mentality and are completely missing the bigger picture. Almost as if yall need a boogeyman to blame for why you’re still not where you want to financially be in life.

  27. It happens every night on "that" side of town.... the only reason anybody cares is that there were cops involved in this one. There are two explanations for why people aren't rioting right now. 1. It's purely about race and is always the case, nobody cares about the epidemic of black men murdered by other black men. If those cops were white, this would have been worse than George Floyd's riots. But since there's not a racial element, the masses don't care. The media does, but you don't see much carrying on at all. 2. The riots only occur when a Republican is President. That's also a fact.

What were the factors that changed for The Elite coaching of Doug Etheridge after 1977 @ PNG with the same type players? Seems he was average coach after that year. My guess would be the players @ PNG from '78-'83 were not as talented as a whole or never understood the skills being taught by his elite coaching techniques like the players from '74-'77. Etheridge Records after 1977 '78- 6-4 '79- 4-5-1 '80- 7-3 '81- 3-7 '82- 4-6 '83- 6-3-1 '84- 2-8 @Round Rock

  34. This is how nonsense and rumors get started. A person playing “what if” speculates on something. The speculation gets repeated and it is no longer speculation. I have repeated this story but it is relevant. About 8-10 years ago our chief of police retired and they were looking for a permanent replacement but also an interim chief. Typically a city will move a deputy chief up as an acting chief until a permanent chief can be hired, usually after the obligatory….. “nationwide search!”. We figured that our city manager was going to go outside of the department even for the interim chief. They perceived the need for a change in culture which happens on occasion. Knowing that an announcement was imminent…. I was conducting our evening shift, shift meeting (some departments call it roll call, etc) and at the conclusion I made a spur of the moment decision. 🙃 Literally within a couple of seconds I made up a story that went like… ”Did any of you hear that the assistant chief of police of the Amarillo Police Department took a leave of absence at his agency and will be named our interim chief tomorrow?”. Of course, everyone said no… they had to, I just made it up. To follow up however (this was part of my scheme), I clearly said that it is probably a typical BS police rumor and had no truth. Forget that I even mentioned it. The next day as I was walking into the police station for my shift meeting, a lieutenant approached me and asked, do you know what time the assistant chief of police of Amarillo is supposed to be here? 😂😂 And that friends, is how rumors get started. In this case, maybe the guy was a former boyfriend of one of the officer’s current girlfriend. If so, they are in even deeper trouble….. But….. In an international news story like this, out of the thousands of guesses as to what happened, it only takes one person (although many people could have come up with the same story/guess) to surmise…. “I wonder if the guy that the cops beat up might have been dating one of their girlfriends?”. The people in that circle of friends will say “I heard (which is true) that one of the officers might have been dating the dead guy’s ex-girlfriend… while conveniently omitting the part about it being a BS guess. The next repeat won’t be “might have” but simply, one of the officers was blah blah blah…. Remember the Amber Guyger case from Dallas PD who she walked into what she thought was her apartment and killed the guy. Almost immediately I was reading that it might have been her boyfriend and she made up the story to get rid of him. It was complete nonsense but it was all over the rumor mill.

  35. If that was true (and I lean toward BS but it is certainly plausible) then this is possibly 1st Degree and premeditated (which doesn’t exist in Texas) murder. In TN premeditated murder is death penalty eligible.

  38. The latest that I read (from a dubious source) is that the kid worked at FedEx… and one of the cop’s ex lady also worked at FedEx and had a thing going with the victim. The story is that it was set up to beat the guy up (hence not asking for license/registration (since they already knew who the victim was). The real kicker is that supposedly the cop (ex bf) took a photo of the victim and sent it to his ex gf… if that’s true, it certainly changes things. Don’t take it as gospel, it’s just what I read. It’ll be interesting to see if that story pans out.

  41. Physical talent you say... this made me think of the Physical Speed that the Vidor Pirates have been utilizing under Mathews. I think the new coach will have success in the first few seasons if he keeps running the same type of offense. I wouldn't mind seeing a change to something with more multiple formations but the Pirates will have a fully stocked backfield for the next few years. Only question I have is who will emerge as the starting QB but they should have plenty of good options to tote the rock at the RB position.

  44. It is chump change. If getting an extra $5k a year is that life changing, then you’re probably poor. I’m Definitely not trading places with these people I paid 6 figures in all taxes this year so I paid more than my fair share and probably paid more than anyone on here. I have better things to do than worry about what stupid crap my neighbor is going to buy with his chump change tax refund, and bigger issues with corporate bailouts and subsidies. Most recent example was PPP program. Literally free money with zero oversight. All pocketed by corporates and business owners, many who didn’t even need the money as their businesses were hardly interrupted and many in fact who did even better during Covid. But it requires less brain power to be mad at your neighbor.. so be it

I’m going to use a local example from a different sport of two men I think do a great job with what they have at what they try to do. Coach Joubert at Kountze and Coach Sutherland at EC. Both with 2 or more state titles (elite according to you). Both well over 7 years since their last state title. Kountze, coincidentally, is fighting for a playoff spot (4th place). Are they worse coaches than they were? Please explain.

If Surratt came to Vidor, Vidor would immediately do things it has never done in its history. Nearly all of Vidor’s problems can be solved with coaching. Instead, everyone blames the kids. As if there’s some big genetic difference between Vidor and PNG and Nederland (and when Vidor was in our district, except for the last few years they had the same size school as PNG). Before Hurricane Harvey, Vidor was sitting right at around 1400 kids. All respect to Coach Matthews, but I think Vidor runs their gimmick offense because Coach Matthews doesn’t know how to teach the skills necessary to run anything else. Vidor kids can run whatever their coach can or will teach them to run. Vidor players could blow everyone’s minds if their leadership believed they could.
