  3. I want to share a story from last year. After the game, my folks and I went to the Whiskey Cake in Katy for a very late dinner. I had driven in from Leander that afternoon and they had left PN-G late due to work. Nobody’d had the time to eat beforehand. There was a family in the restaurant from Liberty Hill sitting a few tables down from us. They had a little girl with them, maybe seven or eight years old, and an older boy who appeared to be late middle school or early high school age. I figured he was a player on the freshman team. That little girl realized we were from PN-G and gave us the evil eye for the entire dinner. I’m talking a full hour of this girl glaring at us from across the dining area, non-stop. You could feel the heat coming off this girl’s gaze. I had to fight not to crack up all night because every time I’d look over to my left, I had the possessed girl’s hellish stare from the exorcism movie looking straight back at me. You could tell the PN-G crowd, the War Chant and Cherokee had driven this poor girl insane that night. Her parents picked up on what was going on and came over to talk to us after they finished their meal. Couldn’t have been nicer folks. Wished us luck in the championship, complimented the fan base - just nice, small town people. I told them I lived just down the road in Leander and drove in for the game. Even for a fan base like Liberty Hill’s that generally travels well, you could tell they were shocked that out-of-town alumni would make a drive like that to see the Indians play. This is the game where our fan base earned the “rabid” label online last year. Every time I think about that, I think about that ferocious glare from that little girl. I have a feeling I’m gonna feel it coming across the field at me again this year. Scalp ‘em!

  5. I don't know of anyone from LH that walked out of the stadium last year believing the outcome would have been significantly different if Noah Long and Joe Pitchford weren't injured. PNG out played us, out coached us and the fans out spirited us. Hell, even the band was better. LH has already overachieved many fan's expectations this year. Our offensive production is down this year and our pass defense is actually worse than last year. What this team lacks in size, elusive speed and elite talent, we make up for in heart and relentless tenacity (at times). Many LH fans want to move away from the Slot-T but I believe this scheme is the primary reason why we consistently make deep runs into the playoffs. Keep an eye on the 165lb Noseguard (#44) because he is fun to watch. That kid has a motor like no other and MAY get home a couple times if the O-line gets caught sleepin'. Good luck PNG fans! I hope the game is competitive, injury free and everyone leaves it all out there on the field. Regardless of the outcome, I'll be in Arlington next week watching a full day of football with my son who will hopefully be playing in this game next year!

  6. Just wanted to express my thanks to SETXsports and all the fans that tuned into Charlie & I this year. With a shout out to TexanLive for using our audio broadcast with your live feed. It has been an honor to express our excitement, frustration and in Charlie's case, homerism. He is a die hard Tigers fan no doubt. In case you didn't already know it. It didn't end the way we wanted it to for the Tigers but we will be back. also, know we don't do this for the recognition. We do this for the football fans who can't travel, for the shift workers who are parents and for anyone who tunes in from across the state. Bless the Tigers. Bless the 409. Bless the young men who leave it all out there just like those of us who played. Wig & Chavo. We out.

    A Tale of Two Cities

Just a thought here and I understand there might be some controversy around this. I think Crosby's implosion and PNG's ascension should teach us a couple very important lessons. 1) We overvalue the effect of athletes (bo's and joes) on the success of a program and undervalue the effect of coaching. 2) Great coaches will get the enrollment involved and working. At the end of the day the single most important thing for late playoff success is depth and coaching. Yes losing a great QB/RB/WR/LB can end a season early but if you don't have depth at all the "not superstar" positions and if the backups aren't just as willing, able and wanting to play as the starters you cannot have success at the highest levels. I think this is true because of a couple of reasons, Winner win. If you are successful and win others want to be a part of that, from that 6'8 300 lbs kid that's never touched a football to that 5'6 kid who will run through a wall to get his chance. They all are important and they all need to feel like part of the team. If you win then no one cares about being the backup. If you win people will be happy to just be on the team. If you win you can have 65 athletes on Varsity every single year. Even a team without elite athletics' talent can execute plays at a high level if they are well coached. Practice times, culture of work, and accountability set the standards for developing 14 year old's into athletic 17 years old's. That being said great coaches can overcome program deficiencies that previously existed. Crosby and PNG prove this. PNG has no more talent now than it has for the last decade. Crosby has no less talent than it has for the last decade. It's about how that talent is coached, brought through the system, and executes daily. My ramblings.

  13. There are always two sides to every story. I know a lot of coaches read this site but I am not going to sit and be someone’s punching bag on a site where people hide their real name. I am not hiding behind my screen name. I have a great resume. Yes, I have been at different places but some were my choice and some were the results of politics in this profession. Some of you coaches who stir up the conversations and hide behind a screen name, well that is why I don’t come coach with you guys. You should worry about your jobs since you are on short leashes. You know who you are and coaches in the area know who you are too. Heck, I have had 7 coaches contact me this morning about the jabs taken at me on this post and they all had only positive things to say. (Last 5 years) OF Assistant – went 3 rounds deep, renewed for next school year. Evadale Boys Head Coach – Won District Championship…tripled win total. Principal wanted her brother to be the coach. (Turned out ok because I went to OF) WOS Girls Head Coach – Renewed, accepted job at Evadale (basketball school) Slocum Girls Head Coach – told girls program from Middle school to High School would not win a game. Won 30 games overall…. AD wanted best friend as a retire/rehire to take over Girls. Ask me to go to the boys’ side as assistant. I ended up accepting job at WOS. (Covid hit this year as well) Deweyville Boys Coach – Wanted to coach my daughter. Accepted job at Slocum. 111 wins as a Head Coach 3 District Championships as Head Coach, 3 District Championships as an Assistant Graduate in December from Lamar as a Honor Student with Master of Education Administration Degree.

  18. I have always said just send 2, but I'm old school that way. But, if you are going to send 4 teams, make sure every district has a minimum 7 teams in it. I don't like 4 teams going out of 4, 5 and even 6 team districts. Also, every #1 seed (district champ) should host a 1st round playoff game. Another incentive to win district.

    Dear Setxsports

I would like to say Thank you for all the support for the Port Neches-Groves Indians. You have been amazing on here. Several Indian fans have commented to me at the number of area schools supporting this seasons run. Last week I spent most of the time standing up between the two decks.I saw so many people representing their respective SETX schools. This past Friday night I saw someone from every school in SETX. A group of what look to be LCM football players, many from PAM, folks from Beaumont, WOS, Silsbee. Vidor, BC, Orangefield, many from Dayton, a guy from Crosby, several from Brenham, and a large contingent of Nederland Bulldogs there. I am in know way saying thats all these are the people I personnaly saw. First please if you make the game we welcome you, we thank you, and though I cant speak for everyone. I have been to many other teams games in my life. I remember driving to Houston to watch Central play in the Dome. Many years ago. I say all of this to say Thanks for your support not only on the game but the support from staff and members of the SETXSPORTS.COM site. You have been most gracious and covered us well. Thanks for the love and suppot.

  26. Public Address should never ever do play by. PA job is to summarize the play after the play. Give down and distance, acknowledge the players in the play (offense, defense) and announce any penalties that were called. PA is never ever to voice their opinion of a play, call. Just announce the facts of the play. PA is not a radio/video broadcast. Vastly different.

  27. In all fairness to 14.2, I would be frustrated as a parent too. Here is what I see, and this is only surface level. His son went from a “ featured” RB to a blocker slotted in the WR spot. He probably never lined up in the WR in his life. He is playing out of position, wonder how many other players are in the same boat. His son is a senior and had no opportunity to seek other options. He did what he could as a parent and met with the new coach and I would assume they came to an agreement to be a RB, but…… His son went from a player line up in the backfield to a slot WR. I can bet everyone on this thread would feel some kinda way too.

  28. 7 teams>in district, 35 players honored. I guess it didn’t matter when it got released since virtually everyone got something. 20 more players honored in 19-4A than the three All NBA teams, despite having 23 less teams. Why not have 7 co-Coaches of the Year? 😂

  32. After the first 2 and 1/2 pages I thought this would end up a waste of a thread and also my time reading. However I'm glad I read through the entire thread and all post before clicking off. As a coach for the past 20 years both in SETX and now in the Greater Houston Area and being very familiar with the WOS Tradition/ Culture and also the last good playoff runs in Ozen's short history, I feel as though I have earned the right to reply to some of the comments in regards to Elite Coaching and also Talent / Culture and how the state of football in SETX has changed in the past few years. 1) IZZY you know I love ya like a son but the (50) 5-2 defense isn't trash, IT worked for years for the Mustangs because CT "Mastered" it along with his staff who many forget never really changed for years. So when you have coaches who have mastered a specific scheme and when I use the term mastered I mean they know how to make all of the adjustments in the scheme for what ever offenses will try to show em. What worked for the past coaching staff will not work for the present staff because its not them, simple as that!! You can't replace almost 30 years of CULTURE and as a community expect the same results. 2) Talent plays just as much a part as Coaching "ELITE" or NOT.. An ELITE Coach I wont say any names but I will say this, he hired ME and gave me my first HS Coaching Job.. "You Cant Win The Kentucky Derby With A Mule" to break it down for you, You Cant Win A UIL STATE Championship Without Talent. 3) Talent can make an average Coach look alot better but who cares, that average coach still has to put that TALENT into position to win, and also manage all of the talent on and off the field, and most importantly LEAD all that TALENT. 4) What it all comes down to is allowing Coaches to set the culture for their programs, communities providing support financially and proudly supporting that team all year long. Championships aren't won in the FALL, they are won in the offseason and summer conditioning.

  35. I think the YMBL had a better field than the LaGrange La. tourney United played in last week. I get what you are saying. I think United "could" play a more tougher schedule and be just fine. But playing a couple of local teams, including Silsbee, doesn't hurt their program. As long as Green and Sigler are coaching those two teams, they will always play each other. That's a fact.

  38. Howdy from Liberty Hill ! Come over to talk to you fine people from the East of our great state of Texas . Enjoyed the talks last yr . Reading on here this year looks like y'all done kicked the scat out of us before the young men have evern taken the field . I understand what LH is up against but the boys like to play football and win or lose that doesn't change from year to year . It's been a tuff yr for the Panthers injury wise but they got some players back just in time to run the table over here in region 4 . Yeah the defense is had to grow up a lot this yr . They getting better but having said that it's going to be a tuff row to hoe this week . But here's to a gd game for both teams with no injuries . For sure the winner of this game it's going to need all hands on deck for the big game and for sure I'll be pulling for the winner either way our game turns out . Sorry for the long post , I'll try to keep future post shorter .... LHFan80

  43. I think a program that has made the playoffs every year the past 10 years, going 80-36 overall (including this season's 3-1) and 14-9 in playoffs (averaging making 2-3 round every year) with a state title appearance does not qualify as "below average". IMO, "below average" is winning less than 50% of your games overall and only making the playoffs 2, maybe 3 times, in that 10 years span and never ever making a state title game. I know many many coaches that would agree with me. You may have been a coach, but I have spoken to many other coaches who disagree with your assessment of PN-G. But like they say, everyone has their own opinion. I do agree with you in the fact you were speaking about FB Marshall's lack of coaching more so than discrediting PN-G for the win. BTW, that's two consecutive games PN-G has defeated FB Marshall. I don't think a "below average" program accomplishes that.

    Png vs Pam

With 9 weeks until the start of the football season, I decided to get the conversation started. After taking one of the worst if not the worst home loss in school history to PAM the PNG Indians were able to quickly get the train rolling behind their first-time and first-year head coach. They finish at Cowboy Stadium with a loss in the state title game. From the looks of it on this forum, Indian fans are gearing up for another great season with key pieces and big names returning. Across twin city highway the Titans were finally able to get the 1st round playoff loss monkey off their back after 2 victories and opening up the 3rd game with promise but eventually falling to Longview. This year's football team looks to be the most recruited class since the 2012 class with multiple players with D1 offers and might have the best player in the class of 2025 & 2026 in Setx. With each team opening up the season in the Top 10 PAM(8) & PNG(6) this game is shaping up to be one of the best if not the best games to watch in week 1 in the state of Texas.

    Crosby 2023

14.2 is my entertainment as I watch the phased evolution of his outlook. Phase 1 - Doubting that the coach can walk and chew gum at the same time Phase 2- Screw it we’re moving to Dayton this is BS Phase 3 - Meet with Coach and he’s ….ok maybe we win 2 games Phase 4- (current phase) Recruiting season begins and kids from around the state flock to Crosby. Phase 5- (entering this phase) Practices begin everyone is huge, fast and better than any team in the past. We might just win 5 games Phase 6- Beatdown from King lowers expectations, but King is the best team in the country so who knows Phase 7 - plays well against FBM …. We may just make it to state …hell yeah Phase 8- (Final Phase) beats Lee to death then gets embarrassed by BH at home. 14.2 exits the board till playoffs. Dallas Cowboys of Harris County
