  1. I hear a lot of talk about a coach who can "change" the culture and pin their hopes on that. As a graduate of a school that has that culture, I can tell you that it not the way it works, ladies and gentlemen. Yes, culture requires the commitment of the players and the coach.....it also requires the commitment of the community. Yes, it requires discipline in the program coming down from the coach and learned by the player....it also requires that the individual parent refrain from going to school officials when their particular son is subjected to that discipline. Yes, it takes a strong defense, but it also takes a parent who doesn't question why his or her son is at safety or linebacker instead of quarterback or running back. The point is a big part of culture is getting off of the coaches back and letting him do his job. A history lesson. Dan Hooks took over the West Orange-Stark head coaching job from Steve McCarty in 1981. He took over a team that was 9-1 in 1980 and subsequently coached the Mustangs to 7-3, 6-4 and 3-7 (the first ever losing season in WO-S history) records over the next 3 seasons. At the end of his seventh season, the Mustangs had 2 state championship trophies in their trophy case. A second history lesson, Hooks' successor, a guy some of y'all might know, lost 3 of his first 4 games as Mustang head coach after he surmised the offense would be better off from the I formation rather than the spread. And that was after his first coaching stint where he went 1-9 and was known around East Texas as the "guy who kept Adrian Peterson on the junior varsity." Despite all that, the Mustangs have never been less than 4 rounds deep in the playoffs with Cornel Thompson as head coach, have made 4 more trips to the state finals' made and put 2 more state championships trophies in the trophy case over on Newton Street in West Orange. Not every decision of Hooks or Thompson did not pan out. But the community as a whole let these guys coach their team. Sure, like any community, the Greater Orange area had their share on village idiots who made their feelings known........they still do. But these guys were given the opportunity to coach their teams. The Lumberton ISD could hire a coach who has a resume of accolades to span goal line to goal line at Raider Stadium to replace Chris Babin. First, they will not find anybody who cares for his kids as much as Coach Babin. Second, even if the resume is better, they will fare no better if the community doesn't get off of his back.

    WOS vs China Spring

Somebody before said its about matchups, and because of that, what WOS does on defense, I suspect will limit what CS can do offensively. I predict CS will have less than 3 first downs going into the 3d qtr. The Jasper defense, is loaded with athletes, but they just run up the field, and put themselves out of position, especially in the first half of the CS game.

Just an over average team. 5 or 6 great players. I think Ned playing lesser teams in the past weeks has them rested and healed. BH better be ready. Ned loves to ruin a home field advantage. Big plays by Ned will make the difference. Monty will have to play the right cards to beat an always well discipline team. Coaching mistakes were made against png. There pencils will be sharp. This game is to close to call. Go Dogs.

  6. With offenses getting better and more diverse I think a great offense beats a great defense these days. I guess the main thing is you don’t have many teams that play great D anymore. There are a few like WO-S, Carthage, and LV that still play great D and put a lot of their top guys on D. But those teams are few and far between. Most of the time your best players are playing on offense in TXHSFB. For sure their are still a few throwbacks, but not many. Carthage is fortunate to have the depth to have athletes on D without playing them both ways, but in the lower classes that’s rare. That’s all I’m getting at. I don’t see a team outside of WO-S in 4a DII that might have a D that can stop Carthage. We will probably find out, but they haven’t shut down a team anywhere close to Carthage yet this season. So your best shot is to score as many as you can and hope it’s enough. Catch a couple breaks and get a few turnovers. Let the chips fall where they may, and in the end you might have a chance. But to think you are going to shut them down isn’t really an option. The last time Carthage got beat was because they couldn’t stop LH. Bad weather was a factor but Carthage still put up like 500 yards of offense and 41 points. Another game they almost lost in that time frame was last year against Lampasas. Lamp scored 42, but they threw 2 pick 6’s and Carthage scored 49. I agree that a great D can be the key, just don’t think teams have great D’s anymore. Tackling is almost a lost art. Again I know there are exceptions, but not many. I just believe if your going to beat Carthage you better have a great offense. That’s the only teams that have beat or came close to beating them recently. Carthage is on a tear since the 2016 playoffs.

  7. Watched the Yoakum vs McGregor game and Yoakum will be by far the best team East Chambers has faced all season long. They have speed and size and played in a tough district. This should be a great game this week EC3 will have to have a solid outing and the Sophomore QB is going to have to add some this week as well. Every week gets tougher in the Playoffs.

    2020 9-5A div 1

I'll explain why that is now. We cover teams that have traditionally been SETXsports.com teams where ever they end up. Cleveland is one of those teams. Much to my chagrin, they were aligned to District 8. I can tell you, even with Cleveland there I had some serious back and forth as to whether we would cover that district. District 10 contains no such teams. @BlackShirts5 As to the current status of the District 10 standings, I just don't know. Here are the standings with all teams involved: Manvel - 3-0 Foster - 4-1 Paetow - 3-1 Hightower - 2-2 Kempner - 1-3 Terry 1-3 Angleton 0-2 Wisdom 0-2 Milby 0-0 As you can tell from the standings, it appears that some teams stopped play during the season (I didn't hear anything about Angleton or Milby, I do know that Wisdom announced that they had ceased football in 2020). The reason that is relevant, District 10 had gone to zone play, but with the dropping of Milby, Angleton and Wisdom, I don't know if they returned to strictly district play. Of note, I don't know how accurate this is, but according to the Football Friday app there are no games scheduled for any of the teams in District 10 past what was played last week.

We aren't stagnating as much you guys are exploding. Houston is engulfing the East side of the county. What you are saying is true. Nederland is land locked with not much growth expected in the future. I really think you guys will go up a division before Nederland goes down. Having said that, I sure hope we kick the crap out of BH and Crosby!!!

  16. 1000% Agreed. The only caveat is (as you stated) they gotta hire someone who, if given the chance, can bring the program full circle. I don’t believe that will be achieved by finding a low rent guy who had “some” success in district at a 2-A school. It needs to be a guy who has experience, tough standards and thick skin.

    WOS vs China Spring

I would not go so far as to say CS will get less than 3 first downs. Their QB is a play maker who will find creases and make things happen. Granted, WO-S will get the better of him and the CS offense, but that Bowden kid has the feet, smarts, and uptempo decision making to find yardage against any defense. They remind me some of the Cuero team and their QB Rodriguez who WO-S played in 2015. I am certain of this - CS will have a hard time slowing down the WO-S offense.

    Silsbee vs #1 Carthage

Carthage typically doesn't have a weakness. They can run it or throw it depending on what the defense is doing. And the coach always says they hang their hat on the defense. That's what it takes to win titles. And when they run up on a school with a once in a decade team, they have had the advantage of the better coaching. Their half time adjustments are crazy good. Titles are never easy.

  30. Danny I’m afraid you’ve got it twisted here. You have no idea who I am or what I stand for at all. I have played football with guys you might know Jason Carter from Caldwell, Texas and Billy Pittman from Cameron, Texas. They might be a little older than you but those are some friends of mine but I’ll call them acquaintances now because as life happens we lose contact. First off don’t ever call me racist because I’m the last person on this message board who’s racist. I have family in PAISD who have played football for PAISD. My children are 3/4 Hispanic. Also my playing years were over in fall of 2000 when I broke my ankle playing college football. I did come home at 19 years old coaching The line for Pop Warner Football in Nederland, then after I got married I helped start a football league in Lake Jackson/Clute Texas(which was a blessing to see numerous young men put what we instilled in them to become college prospects as they came up through through Brazosport ISD system), and then I coached in Conroe in which I had the blessing to coach my nephew(again had the blessing to see numerous young men put what we instilled in them to become college prospects). The only reason I say what we instilled in them is because that’s what each one told me when we would go watch them play Thursday and Friday nights as they grew up after we were finished coaching for years. I DON’T SAY THIS BECAUSE I’M SOME AMAZING COACH BUT IM SAYING MY COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND WHO I AM ISN’T WHO YOU THINK. My oldest played in Orangefield when the group of freshman and sophomores now went through the program. That group went to 7 semifinal games, 4 Super Bowls but lost to a great group of WOS young men twice. When I coached it wasn’t about where my son played. Also my son played center every single year of his youth career because that’s where his team needed him. He didn’t like it but he was taught it’s not about what you want it’s about what your team needs you to be. He played his heart out every game. He was an undersized center in height and weight. Now he’s earning his Old English N in Nederland. When I coached It was about putting the best athletes in positions to be successful. We also taught them we are not just a team it’s a brotherhood that will last for years to come. I taught them you play for the person next to you because we are family and family doesn’t let each other down. So no plays off. We also taught them football techniques, gaps, holes, assignments, and could run a no huddle with them running 6-9 plays straight. That’s been my coaching philosophy and that was instilled in me in 7th grade by the great middle School Coach from Nederland Jack Lynch. I coached 1 year in Nederland on a great Pee Wee team but got beat by the better team you were coaching I believe or maybe even helping in the Super Bowl. I commend you on what you’re doing for those boys, your community, and teaching those boys the game of football you love. Which I am sure they are loving just as much. Congratulations on another Super Bowl victory. Just FYI my thoughts on a message board has nothing to do with race at all. It has everything to do with seeing kids in all organizations within STJFL having games turned into hot messes by coaches, parents, fans, and refs. I’ve umpired baseball for 18 years now and stopped being football referee when my oldest started playing. You know what ruins youth sports? UNEDUCATED PARENTS on sport rules and parents who believe little Johnny is better than he really is. Also I’m not a Nederland Senior Coach. My youngest son played Nederand Youth Football on the Senior team. He was their starting center and defensive tackle #77. He was center all but 1 year in youth football. He was undersized for those positions but I would say he held his own against bigger and stronger talent. In my opinion the success of your youth program isn’t super bowl trophies but what those boys learn from you the coaches to carry with them into school ball. Then how They grow from there. I apologize for my comment PA middle school that’s on me. Like I said I feel bad for those boys because they deserve a season. Let’s Fellowship I’m down with that myself. Last name is Delahoussaye feel free to message me. My issues have nothing to do with Racism, BLACK/WHITE, or me being a racist. If you have any questions please message me personally.

    PNG v. Crosby 2020

PNG has not stopped the run all year. If that changes this game, it will be appreciated, but highly doubtful. That said, PNG can go no huddle , spread the field short option run & passing attack all night, if Bost is sharp. Crosby can strike fast & quick, or if need be, chew up the clock. Avoiding turnovers is a must for either team to win. If PNG & Crosby both move the ball the game can stay close. I believe Crosby will take the game by 20 if no surprises. Turnovers can turnover that score quickly. Just praying for a clean injury free game going through the rest of district.

  36. The last time I saw anything on it (from one of the news sites), Barbay was getting around $95k in Jasper, so their pay scale is most likely very close to Lumberton's. I doubt that he's going anywhere, but I can't help but put Jasper in a hypothetical situation like this. I doubt they would start someone else out at a salary like that unless he came in with the same track record. It would probably be someone with less experience. Lumberton is in a tougher spot than Jasper would be just because there would be a lot more work to do to change the culture of the program and like someone mentioned, a lot of losses would pile up in the process. A college that I follow (Nebraska) is going through the same thing with Scott Frost. It's tough and requires a lot of patience from everyone involved. Just find someone that understands winning culture and give him time and money to build it. Most schools go through long periods of losing at some point. I've studied a lot of schools' histories that are posted here and it happens and then someone brings them out of it.

    BH Vs. Nederland

I've only watched 4 games this year and the district is far from being solid. There's Crosby, BH and then everyone else. Crosby took advantage of 6 turnovers and that's why the score was lopsided when they played. I think Crosby was 10-14 points better this year without the turnovers. The rest of the district is atrocious this year. That's facts, just not a good year for our district football wise. Crosby and BH are district juggernauts, but not regional juggernauts by any means. I don't think people are being arrogant, just being honest.

Or was there maybe a shared sense on community in beating a common enemy? Stop stirring paranoia and start considering the task we must undertake as a nation to beat an invisible and totally indiscriminate enemy. You’re doing patriotism a disservice.
