  2. Shooting is often predicated on defense. For instance, I would venture to guess most 19-4A teams have their worst shooting nights against Silsbee. And while I would agree that whichever team shoots it better will be a significant advantage, one number jumped out at me way beyond any other in the first meeting. Orangefield simply cannot turn it over 28 times and expect to have a chance to win the game.

  3. I’m also wondering what happens if you don’t win another within the next 7 years… if not is it because they get content and lazy, were they just lucky? Do you get stripped of stature if you don’t validate in 7 years?

  6. Sorry, I worded that really poorly. I meant if you combined the two districts and took four teams. If you just brought BC or WOS over, I would definitely expect either to compete for and likely take the 4th spot. With the two districts combined it’s Silsbee, then HF-HH-HJ, then everyone else a ways back.

  12. I don’t see it as about stature so much as a way to judge where things are likely going. If, seven years from winning a state championship, a team hasn’t been back to state, it’s roughly safe to say they aren’t likely to be back to state any time soon. But, I take a more broad approach - Getting to state is nearly as useful an indicator as winning state, and getting at least to the semifinals means you had a team that was capable of getting to state. So if I had a coach getting to semifinals or to state seven years in a row, never winning state, I’d think long and hard before firing him on the hope that a new guy can replicate that success. A coach that can get you that far is one of the best coaches in the state. But, I like the seven year rule because in seven years you have an idea of what is a coach’s “normal” (statistically) outcome.

  18. Both still could clinch if both Tarkington and Onalaska lose their games Friday. Currently, it's a three way tie for first with Coldspring, Crockett and Shepherd tied at 9-3. With Coldspring playing Shepherd Friday night, that will help eliminate the three way tie. There are still scenarios that the three could be back tied after the last game Tuesday. Will cross that bridge when we get to it. In the case of a two way tie, it goes to head to head. If both teams have split, then the options are to play a seeding game, flip a coin or one team can concede the seed to the other.

  23. They SHOULD beat them. HJ is an improved team from earlier in the year when they beat BC by 19. The cards have looked good in district, but that district is really bad this season apart from Silsbee. If you combined the districts, apart from Silsbee, who would win it, nobody from that district would even sniff the playoffs in 20-4A. All that having been said, the cards do have a shot. They’re not a bad team, have a little momentum, and the hawks are definitely down this year.

    Tom Track 1

[email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 37, Number 1 _____ Feb. 7, 2024 Seems as if it’s been a long winter by Southeast Texas standards. So it may be awhile before our area high school track and field performers can return anywhere close to top form. Yet here’s the beauty of sports we’ve discovered through 56 years of sports writing – you never know. Not many brilliant minds expected a 5A state football champ two months ago from those purple Indians. Hats off to Jeff Joseph and his folks for doing just that. Why do I mention this football stuff in our first 2024 track report? Because when we report in three months at the state meets, our 409 needs some state champions for the schools to honor. On the subject of the state meet, the schedule places the trip to Austin about 10 days earlier in the calendar year than last year. Of course that also means earlier dates for the district, area and regional meets during April. And, you guessed it. The earlier post-season schedule has required a number of regular-season meets to either be canceled or moved much earlier in this year’s schedule. A small handful of schools, including Nederland, are scheduled to visit Huffman Hargrave high school for a meet this week. Most area teams will wait a week or two. No doubt a large field can be expected next week at Nederland for the Bulldog Relays. That should be a showcase for many of the season’s strongest performers. Quite a few will have to trade in their basketball legs for track and field legs as February and March progress. Who are the premier stars? It’s too early to tell but Morgan Campbell certainly has established herself as a superb distance runner. She was a 5A girls state top 20 finisher in last fall’s UIL cross country championships at Round Rock. We’re also hoping for a great senior year from Beaumont Kelly’s Paris Coleman. Then there’s Vidor senior Raegan Stephenson, who snagged the gold medal in Austin at the 5A girls high jump with a leap of 5-7. If Raegan is properly motivated, she is likely to clear a higher mark now. More than 30 schools have provided us with their season track schedules and we thank them for getting more of those on their school websites this time. Much of my area weekly leaders will depend on e-mails from area coaches and officials. Please send them to [email protected]. My wife Donna is in her fourth year of having kidney dialysis at the Davita Port Arthur location. That greatly limits my active participation. You know I will attend meets and report for the Beaumont Enterprise when I can. Feel free to post and/or publish any track info as I send it to you. I’m just trying to recognize our area’s athletes. I don’t need any personal glory at all. Thanks for all your help and God bless. 35. What needs to happen imo is for 6A to have 2 divisions like 1A through 5A and also add a 7A and get the district numbers to where there isn’t such a large difference in enrollment numbers and try to have no more than 6 teams in a district

  36. I’m trying to see what the difference you are complaining about. Over the last 12 years Orangefield has been .500 Being .500 running Slot T is different from .500 “Wide open West Coast Offense” as you say.

  41. The list of things that can change between JH and HS is vast. It's more likely than not that JH success won't be the same in HS. 1st and foremost.. 7th grade kids playing against everyone else's 7th grade kids and 8th grade kids playing against everyone else's 8th grade kids is not evenly remotely the same as 9-12th against 9-12th. A grade level of kids playing with either the grade above them or below them.. or both can dramatically change the success/failure compared to when it was just them. Not only do kids mature, gain strength, gain speed, gain size, and gain skill (both physically and mentally) at completely different levels and pace individually, but kids actually WORK and/or gain/lose interest completely different. Forget about the other obvious variables.. like: academic eligibility, transferring (both losing and gaining kids), quitting, reclassification, coaching change, etc. etc. etc. The situation for a Senior IS NOT THE SAME as that same kid's situation was when they were a 7th grader. To think so is idiotic. It's truly funny to me to hear people make predictions based on what happened in JH... might as well add little league as a predictor lol.
    1 point
  42. This is pretty simple if you understand the culture in LH. The varsity staff works with all coaches at all levels, even into little league, to teach the Slot T offense. The varsity coaches have monthly meetings with the little league coaches and get scouting reports on players coming up through the program so when they get into the 7th grade, the coaches already know who is who and who plays where. It is taught the same way in the 4th grade as it is taught at the varsity level, so the kids understand it and want to operate in that offense. Any dads who think their kids are going to be division 1 receivers and QBs take their kids elsewhere so that the only ones who are left are the ones who are committed to thriving in the slot T. This is the product of consistency in program leadership for many many years and the commitment of that leadership to build a successful program from the bottom up. Therefore, to replicate what LIberty Hill has is absolutely impossible without long term commitment and community buy in. Vidor has/had too many folks always looking for a reason to run Matthews off and complaining about the Slot T to even begin to try to replicate what Liberty Hill has.
    1 point
  43. On the slight chance that you’re not being sarcastic, I agree the coaches could only do so much when the Head Coach wouldn’t listen to what they had to say about making changes to the program and the way things were done.
