While we’re addressing that, why not also address school districts like Houston (196k students) and Dallas (154k students) being allowed to participate in 3A, 4A, and 5A playoffs due to school size, while pulling talent to those teams from all across the city. For the most part not a big deal in football, but the basketball playoffs are a joke in 4A and 5A. The success Silsbee (2700 students in the district) has managed playing in what has become a big school tournament has been nothing short of extraordinary.5 points

DuBois named Vidor new AD/Head Football Coach
Tim Riggins and 3 others reacted to oldschool2 for a topic
It's hilarious to me. The Orangefield Coach/Team was emphatically congratulated on the season they had... while running the Slot-T. Coincidentally, the predicted front runner and spread team of the district (Anahuac).. had their season ended by eventual state champ and another Slot-T team (Franklin). It's almost as if people don't realize the irony.4 points -

On the surface I don't think its without some merit. With that said, the state needs to focus on more pressing issues, and stay out of HS FB unless some dire need warrants it.2 points -
Well, my streak finally comes to an end
AthleticSupporter - Jock reacted to AggiesAreWe for a topic
After 51 straight years of attending the boys basketball state tournament, my streak will end this season as I will not be attending this year. My goal since I started going was to attend as many as my dad did who started taking me when I was 8 years old in 1972. My dad ended up attending 50 straight, his last time going in 2007. I made 51 straight last season. My priorities have changed over the years and my interest has waned some the last couple of years. Got grand sons to run around with now (T-ball, soccer, etc.) along with hanging out at the beach. With the wife and I retired now, just got other things I want to do. Actually I'll be hitting the new Horseshoe casino next week. I enjoyed each and every trip to the state tourney. Great memories with my dad and got to see some great basketball. I have been truly blessed. I may attend another state tourney (particularly if Silsbee goes) but the streak had to end sometime. Will miss hanging out with coaches, officials, media and fans that attended on a regular basis. Good luck To Beaumont United next week. Bring home that 3rd state championship.1 point -

Hitchcock is very young. The bulk of their scoring, rebounding are soph. Only one senior contributes. 85% of their scoring will return next season.1 point -
yeah, found some interesting stuff on the google about it. Lots of drama over in strawn, and with this move. Strawn went 15-0 and won a state football championship with him as the qb as a freshman last year, and then 4-6 without him this year, with Benjamin going 15-0 and winning a championship this year after a first round exit last year.1 point

Hagar reacted to CardinalBacker for a topic
In 2016 Dubois’s BC team threw the ball occasionally. They hit the tailback and what I’d call a tight end numerous times through the season. I felt like Dubois would have opened it up even more if we’d had more arm on the qb. I have a good friend who played in a wing T system in West Texas all through jh and high school and he came with us to a game or two. One of the things that he pointed out to me was how our qb would pop his head up on passing plays immediately after faking the handoff. He was like "yeah, our coach killed me over and over for that..." Dubois will throw it if he's got a kid that's capable.1 point -

If the QB is not developed early on, such as middle school then you won't have one ready by the time he gets to varsity. If the system is changed it will need to be on the lower levels as well.1 point

I am not trying suggest something is wrong, just seeking clarity. I don't understand how Hitchcock, which has a population of 7,000, has a high school with only 490 or so enrollment. Must be a lot of private schools in that area.1 point

I was being facetious. Coincidentally.. I like the Slot-T. I also like the spread.. and I like most offensive schemes when ran successfully. None of them are designed to fail. No coach says, "We're going to run this offense.. and hope for a few yards or even getting back to the line of scrimmage. And if not, we'll just punt and try again next drive." They're all designed to lead into substantial gains.. Having said that, the slot-t isn't good for playing catchup. So when you need quick scores or to make up ground, it's not good. But, the slot-t wins state titles every year. Hard to say it isn't effective. I like to think coaches do what they feel puts the team in the best situation to win games based on either their personnel or knowledge.1 point -

This should fall under the purview of the UIl, not the State of Texas legislature. Its incumbant on the UIL, not the State, to assure competative fairness. Stop the recruiting and out of control transfers and the UIL could solve a lot by just doing that.1 point -

It's funny how in this world, you really can't have a opinion. Matthews did a hell of a job, and changed many kids lives for the better. In the eyes of every fans you are judged on the what have you done lately rule. Let's be honest with coaches from High School to Pros, you must win, you are judged by that. I feel if Matthews schemed a passing game into his playbook, his teams would have been difficult to beat over the years. However my hat is off to this guy on a great job. I enjoyed the games my sons played against him. Wish you much success coach.1 point

I'm black but don't worry about Black History Month it has nothing to do with this game or race involved... These are 2 teams deserving to be where they are at now. (The predominantly black team won) But who cares and as I'm typing this now it's March 1st get over it and let's congratulate 2 teams that played their hearts out tonight and contrary to popular belief I was rooting for Orangefield because of our area not of race... No offense to you but we can't be one-sided about this game and like I said in my last post (the predominantly white team almost beat the black one). Let this one be about skill not race. Thank you and God bless.1 point -
