This is unfortunate. The real story isn’t Musk’s indignation or the poor way Trump is handling the situation though. That’s just the side show to keep us from focusing on the real issue. And it’s bipartisan. Our politicians from the bottom to the top are a group of thieving, lying grifters who do what they want and when they want without genuine regard for the general population. It friggin sickening. These spending bills are a joke along with the process with which they are contrived. Just bend over and take it and be happy about it.5 points -
In wrapping up this session the Supreme Court finished strong. In the last couple of days we have: Trump v. Casa - The Supreme Court said that federal district judges have been greatly overstepping their authority in issuing universal injunctions. As an example from what I googled, G W Bush had 12 universal injunctions in 8 years. Obama had 20 in 8 years. Trump has had 40 in less than 5 months. Of those, 35 were issued in only 5 districts. So out of almost 100 federal district courts, 5 have been used as a hatchet job. Anything that Trump does, take it to one of those federal courts and end it. Had Obama had this happen so the same pace as Trump, he would have had 900 universal injunctions, not 20. Mahmoud v. Taylor - In Montgomery County, Maryland, the school board decided that several LGBTQ books would be used from Pre-K through 5th grade. The district however had an opt out option if the teacher used the books for class assignments. Not so shockingly, the school district was stunned at the volume of opt out requests. So they changed the policy to no opt outs allowed for any reason. The Supreme Court struck down the ban on an opt out choice as it violated the First Amendment right to freedom of religion. Apparently some people have forgotten or haven’t understood that freedom of religion at school doesn’t mean only that religion can’t be pushed at public schools but it also can’t be denied. Seriously, who thinks that reading books on sexuality starting at 4 years old is a good thing… much less forced. Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton - Yep, a Texas case. Texas passed a law where accessing online adult content sites required age verification. The FSC claimed that it violated the free speech of adults to require age verification. The Texas law did not ban anything but only required age verification. The FSC claimed that showing your age violated the Constitution. The Supreme Court said that the state governments already restrict such material from over the county sales and a person can be asked to verify age by producing an ID. The same is true for tobacco and alcohol sales as examples. So why should digital media have less of a standard? The Supreme Court said that it didn’t and having as age requirement for online material that minors might access is no different than face to face, over the counter transactions. Overall it seems like a great couple of days from SCOTUS.4 points

My Father pasted away in December of 2020, he would of been 90 Jan 19th. I remember several months before he passed, I took him to Wal-Mart to pick up some things. That was a big deal in itself, because I drove his truck. He didn't want to give up the keys, but he had no business on the road. He had Lewy body dementia, so it affects mind and balance. Anyway, we had to park several spots from the entrance and he was struggling to walk but refused to use a walker. I picked up a shopping cart on the way and he used that to help him walk and keep his balance. I told him he should get a handicap sticker for his truck so he could park close. He looked at me straight in the eyes and said, " Son, they only give out so many of those, so I don't want to take one away from someone who really needs it". Lying to benefit your family or any type of fraud, takes money or goods from someone. BTW, my Dad was raised poor, lived on a houseboat in Louisiana and started working when he was around 10. He made a good life for himself because he seen what poor was.4 points -

Supreme Court ends nationwide injunctions from district judges
thetragichippy and 2 others reacted to tvc184 for a topic
Today, the Supreme Court made a ruling that appears to permanently end what has become too commonplace lately, universal or nationwide injunctions. In the last couple of decades, it has become an issue with federal district judges issuing a ruling in court that stopped a nationwide law or presidential executive order. Federal district judges are the federal equivalent of a county felony judge in Texas. If you get indicted for a felony in Jefferson County, for example, you will go to trial in one of the three felony courts in Jefferson County in Beaumont. The district judge’s authority deals with a motion or a trial in front of that judge. The district judge is not an appeals court level but the trial court level. The Supreme Court just issued a ruling that the universal (nationwide) injunction was beyond the authority of the federal district judges. So when Trump or any future president issues an executive order or the DOJ tries to enforce a federal law, one of the trial court level federal district judges can’t with the stroke of a pen end the order or the law. The case is Trump v. Casa about birthright citizenship. The ruling today has nothing to do with that case which still has to be hurt. What it seem to do was to stop the federal district judges for putting a nationwide halt to executive orders. It seems like this has been brewing for a long time and the Supreme Court finally stepped in. Also Justice Amy Coney Barrett blasted Justice Brown Jackson who dissented in the ruling. Her comment was that Brown Jackson: “Decries an imperial executive while embracing an imperial judiciary”.3 points -

Lyondell Basell Houston has been basically shut down for almost a decade. They’ve had major expansions at newer polymer/petrochem facilities in La Porte & Chocolate Bayou. This facility was only kept running for as long as it was for feedstock for their primary businesses. They tried to sell for years. But, no one saw feasibility in trying to retrofit/modernize. Plus, the regulations imposed by Harris County & the Feds made refinery operations almost unbearable. Technically, the facility was located in Houston. The progessives in charge locally made their operation a living hell. Very similar to California. This had absolutely nothing to do with tariffs & shows the author’s ignorance of the subject.3 points

In comparison, this is a walk in the park. While he makes the final decisions, he's got a ton of advisors and support staff. My prediction is Iran makes a deal and we don't get involved (although there is enough support to warrant it) and Russia/Ukraine is done before Christmas,3 points -

There’s also been talk about businesses rotating the Holidays… these four this year, those four next year, etc. I don’t think Trump spoke out of turn- I think he was whistling at a group of his supporters who aren’t happy that the last two federal holidays were gifts to the African American Community. What has divided the country is progressives not getting their way on everything. The voters pushed back on their ideas at the election, and they aren’t happy. The organizers purposely picked the day to protest. Trump—like him or not—didn’t pick it. So far, the Constitutional Republic is functioning as intended. POTUS has won a few SCOTUS cases, and lost a few. Power has been checked. Congress is working on a budget that might reign in some spending & prioritize. (Yet to be seen how it will turn out.) Immigration law is being followed more than it has in decades. Yes, there have been some high profile hiccups. But, the broader effort is what the majority of voters requested, and is required by law. Nothing ‘kingly or authoritarian’ about that issue. I don’t see a need for a No Kings Day effort other than it’s a way for progressive/anarchist groups to attempt to disrupt. The major crowds amounted to—supposedly—around 2 million nationwide from numbers I’ve seen. A good number…until you realize it’s actually only around 1% of the voters of the 2024 election. Why am I not surprised that Randi Weingarten (Teacher’s Union) is a major promoter & contributor? How teachers can still support her is beyond me. She is a big reason Texas passed school choice—which most teachers I’ve spoken with were against. She cares more about activism than the teachers and students she supposedly represents.3 points

Well duh! Do you expect a college in Beaumont, Texas to be in a major conference? They are competing at the level they should be, against schools in similar market. The “big” sports finished 3rd, 2nd, and 3rd in a 12 team conference. I guess if your only definition of success is winning the conference tournament so you get a bid to the NCAA tournament, no one would ever meet your expectations. Texas won the similar trophy in the SEC and will likely win the Director’s Cup for the best athletics program in the country yet again. This is in no small part to Chris Del Conte being the best in the biz imo. Jeff O’Malley is not a good AD, he’s a great one. No doubt. We grew up poor as church mice after my parents divorced. My Mom refused food stamps, or housing assistance. She said as long as we could get by getting clothes from the Treasure house (donated clothing) and grow a garden and things of that nature, she would never consider assistance. And she never did. We had very little, but we got summer & after school jobs to help out my Mom with bills and buy our own school lunches. I've always thought that made us a stronger family and us kids stronger individuals. Even though she's gone now, I still thank her for that lesson all the time. I have no issue with assistance for those that need it. Emphasis on the last 5 words of that sentence...3 points -

The Supreme Court on Mexico’s lawsuit to sue American gun manufacturers
LumRaiderFan and 2 others reacted to tvc184 for a topic
Mexico sued several US firearms manufacturers as being responsible for murders in Mexico It was not completely unexpected to be a winning case for firearms manufacturers but the unanimous decision, authored by Kagan, is a welcome sight. The case is Smith & Wesson et al. V. Estados Unidos Mexicanos (Mexico) Smith & Wesson was sued along with six other gun manufacturers (Colt, Glock, Ruger, Baretta, etc.) in the United States by Mexico. The claim (that might have shut them down) was that those manufacturers were responsible for gun violence in Mexico and because the cartels used American manufactured guns. Mexico claimed that since the manufacturers did not strictly police or regulate who bought goes from FFL’s, they were responsible. The First Circuit Court of Appeals covering Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Puerto Rico ruled in favor of Mexico saying the suit could go forward. The firearms manufacturers appealed to the Supreme Court and their ruling was issued a few hours ago. A unanimous Supreme Court ruled that the federal law, Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, protects firearms manufacturers from lawsuits in state and federal courts unless it can be shown that the manufacturer was complicit by aiding and abetting the illegal gun transfers. Mexico showed no evidence that any of the manufacturers were knowingly helping the drug cartels to obtain the guns. The decision was authored by Elana Kagan who in her order wrote…. “Finally, Mexico's allegations about the manufacturers’ design and marketing decisions" add nothing of consequence. As noted above, Mexico here focuses on the manufacturers' production of "military style" assault weapons, among which it includes AR-15 ri-fles, AK-47 rifles, and .50 caliber sniper rifles. But those products are both widely legal and bought by many ordinary consumers. (The AR-15 is the most popular rifle in the country.) The manufacturers cannot be charged with assisting in criminal acts just because Mexican cartel members like those guns too” So in the Opinion of the Court written by Kagan, the AR15, AK47 and similar guns are “widely legal and bought by many ordinary consumers”. She then noted that the AR15 is the most popular rifle in the country. That language may come up in the next session or two when the Supreme Court takes up the assault weapons ban in some states under the premise that they should not be included in the common use test in the Supreme Court cases of Heller and Bruen. The main facts that are important here in my opinion are that even the liberal leaning justices, saw the stupidity of Mexico‘s claim and issued a ruling to protect gun manufacturers against what I think is a frivolous claim and that Kagan wrote the opinion. In doing so wrote that the assault rifles and even sniper rifles were widely legal and purchased by consumers and that the AR15 was the most popular rifle in the country. The flabbergasting part is that the First Circuit Court thought that the manufacturers should be liable if one of their weapons was later used to commit a crime. I guess in their opinion, if a drunk driver killed someone, the family should be able to sue Exxon-Mobil for manufacturing the gasoline.3 points -

Lufkin lost half of that 2024 team. New Coach Abseck, new system for the kids from the past 30 years. Building and changes take some time. We will see how this season develops. Absecks first indoctrination to play IN Longview, if you have never played there you will never forget the experience, it will live in your head forever. They will crush your spirit if they get that chance. IMO if PAM with all that talent doesn't win district and go at least 3 rounds you have to wonder how that goes for their program in 2026. Lots of talent on that team. I came away from our game last season at PAM knowing we had hung on to beat a really talented group of kids. Sometimes you just don't know what makes the difference. Barbers Hill was talented last year and loaded with skilled sophomores, that talent is still there, AND if key injures had not occurred for them last season we will never know. A new coach and optimism for them, Abseck had built something there and in many ways BH will be the benefactor of that this year. Thought a young 2024 Westbrook group looked good at times, you could see the flashes of talent, and with the right coaching could be a surprise in the district. If Beaumont United finds their offense, I thought their D was quite decent last year, another new coach. Galveston Ball may have graduated some key guys but there is some talent returning for them this year and a new coach.. I don't know much about them and Baytown Sterling.2 points -
