With the exception of Danny Malone, whose two seasons don't present a sufficient sample size, Brandon Faircloth had the best winning percentage of any PN-G coach since Doug Ethridge. He had the most wins to his name of any PN-G coach in PN-G history; he took only thirteen seasons to break a record his predecessor took fifteen seasons to set. He sent more players on to play at the college level, particularly at more major college programs, than any coach in PN-G history by a country mile, and produced arguably the best athlete in school history. His teams shattered multiple school records dating back decades. He brought PN-G its first undefeated regular season in 32 years - only the third such season in school history - and strung together the most consistent streak of deep playoff runs PN-G's had in four decades. Most recently, he took a team that wasn't even predicted to make the playoffs three rounds deep, pulling off two major upsets over state-ranked powers along the way, the latter of the two sporting an 11-0 record at the time. And you think the fact that he didn't get us all the way to state during his thirteen seasons, in an era when no Southeast Texas team in PN-G's classification has managed to beat the suburbs to get to state since 2002, is sufficient justification to dismiss him, on the off chance his successor might hire the next Art Briles as an assistant? Roschon? What would we have done with Roschon if we had an “actual state championship-type coach” when he was playing? That’s seriously what you’re asking? Roschon’s family moved out of Port Arthur ISD and into PN-GISD when RJ was still playing Pop Warner because Faircloth is one of the best QB coaches in Texas and RJ’s dad knew Faircloth could develop RJ’s talent. I remember that - I went to school with RJ’s older brother after they made the move. If Faircloth hadn’t been at PN-G, Roschon never would have played a down at PN-G. So what would we have done with Roschon if we had a true, blue, smitty-certified, state championship-caliber head coach? The answer is, not damn thing. The fact that RJ played for PN-G at all is yet another reason we were so lucky to have Faircloth. You’ve hated Faircloth since the day the man hired on. You didn’t know the first thing about PN-G then, and you still don’t now. Go back to worrying about Nederland ISD’s bonds.

If and when Faircloth leaves for Sulpher Springs, those that wanted him gone, and those that believe all coaches should deliver a state title in a given time frame, will find out that changing a coach does not mean it gets any better. IMO, the 3rd or 4th round is the ceiling (or realistic expectation) PNG should expect.

Agreed - coaching can’t be ignored. But I think it’s short-sighted not to look at what Faircloth did with both eyes open and give credit where credit is due - PNG success, where we had it, under Faircloth, wasn’t guaranteed. Faircloth developed offensive talent on a year-to-year basis as well as or better than any coach in the area. And that kept us in games we should have lost. Would I like to see better defense? Yes. I also think we could be better. But there’s no guarantee a new coach is going to reach even what Faircloth did. But the one thing that’s certain is certain PNG fans are going to be toxic to the new guy and we’ll wonder in a few years why he left. They may as well start getting the for sale signs ready for the new guy. Sometimes PNG fans just don’t deserve a good coach. They don’t want a team, they want a club. Coach Thompson would have lasted five seconds at PNG because the first time he required an ounce of toughness from the kids he would lose the team. And no matter what Faircloth ever did, he was getting back-bit in every direction. I’m going to laugh my head off if Sulphur Springs win state under Faircloth. Not saying he will, but maybe he’s better than we gave him credit for? Best of luck to the new guy. I hope he likes listening to parents whine.

Zero coaches are coming into PNG and thinking they bout to win state. I promise you. And that doesn’t mean they will do a bad job. Just is what it is.

PN-G just played 3 rounds. They don’t have the most talent, and never have. PN-G has always played above their talent level and beat teams they have no business beating. Faircloth got the most out of his kids and teams, IMO. While he was there, PN-G had a prolific offense, something there weren’t accustomed to on a yearly basis, and that was all due to Faircloth. He had a great offensive mine. His team’s weakness was always defense. He could never find someone to lead a decent defense and I assume that’s people “gripe” about him. Good luck finding someone to put up the points he put up year after year, and then getting them to play defense like a WO-S or Carthage, with the talent level they have. Sometimes you don’t know how well you had it, until you lose it.

IDK why anyone would want to coach at PNG following the treatment of Faircloth. Peeveys not going anywhere. Now Alvarez is viable option for PNG but he probably wouldnt want that

I am hoping & praying, literally, that we go outside the area for a new head coach. NOT Beaumont, not Port Arthur, not even Port Neches Groves. We need a coach who's only knowledge of PNG is that they have winning tradition going, and that coach should desire to do everything in his power to keep that tradition alive. Home town boys may be friends with administration, or school board, but there is no place for that in hiring a head football coach. (Anyone remember the Tim Owen years at PNG. (He was well liked, a great guy, a great assistant, but not a great head coach.) Bring in the outsider that wants to prove himself in this new competitive district!!!🏈

Reagan, I appreciate your respect of Coach Ethridge. You will not find a bigger fan of Coach Ethridge than me. That said, let's not overlook the facts that Coach Ethridge surrounded himself with talented assistant coaches, e.g., Butch Troy, Paul Carswell, Ken Clearman, Greg Davis, Bruce Bush, Terry Cobb, Jerry Hooper, and several others, and Coach Ethridge had some talent on the 1974-1977 teams. He had D-1 talent. In the seventies, Port Neches and Groves were growing. Refineries employed thousands, not hundreds, but thousands. Families moved to Port Neches and Groves. Some of those families had talented kids. There are not too many kids at PN-G today like Richy Ethridge (Texas Tech), Randy Ethridge, Ted Brack (TCU), Kyle Aguillard (Tennessee), Matt Burnett (Lamar), Robert DeRutte (LSU), Justin Eicher (Lamar), James Shipley, Von Robinson, and several others. LBs like Ted Brack, 6'2" or 6'3" and 215 lbs. that could run from sideline to sideline and violently end plays do not come through PN-G all that often. Neither do RBs like Justin Eicher...6'2" 200 - 210 lbs. He could run over your and away from you. Those teams from the seventies are long gone. Times have changed. Enrollments and districts have changed. SETX has changed. The game of football has changed. Coach Ethridge is the greatest chief to ever lead our Tribe. He's on the Mount Rushmore of PN-G greats, but he had talent on the sidelines and in the huddle when he made those championship runs. His son, Richy, was a MLB playing QB. Tough and savvy. He could read defenses at the line of scrimmage and get PN-G out of bad plays and into good plays because he was the coach's son. That doesn't happen all that often where you combine great coaching with great athletes, and your son directs the team and knows how to run your system. Just my 0.02 cents. RIP Coach Ethridge. I get it, Reagan, you have high standards. But, build in some leeway. Great coaches come in different packages. Peace.

Dude took Calallen to the semis 12 times in 37 years after taking HF to the semis twice in six years, meaning every three years he's playing for a shot at the dance. That's a hell of a bar. There's not many guys who've ever graced a sideline in Texas that could go to a school in the barrio and win 400+ games in the southern half of Texas with Galena Park's roster. You're saying the superintendent should've gone to him and said, "Look, I know you've been here 10 years, made nine straight playoff appearances, had seven 10+ win seasons, have three undefeated regular seasons, four district titles and have been to the semis two times(first in school history) but we're going to go a different route because you're not winning titles"? Let it go dude, Buchannan, Dodge and Surratt aren't the only great coaches in the state. Yes, he could, with that level of talent and against that level of competition. that being said, Surratt wouldn't have sniffed a state title if he'd coached at PNG for the last 13 years. A great coach can only do so much, and there's a ceiling to what they can build. the ceiling in carthage is higher than in png, and the quality of opponents in their division is notably lower. There's also another big difference: Surratt has and has had for a long time the total support of the community. That makes a big difference as well (although total support still isn't going to help any coach make png any type of contender for state). I just read through this whole thread, and the guy who called you delusional hit the nail on the head. Post after post about not going to state. there are close to 3000 high school football teams in texas, and 24 go to state a year. For various reasons, some schools go multiple times in a row, or multiple times in the space of a few years. If you multiply 24 x 13 you get 312 teams that have appeared in a state championship since faircloth took over at PNG. 156 state champs, total (actually a few less, because there was no 6A when he took them over). And there are several, several teams and coaches that have taken up multiple opportunities to go to state. I'm absolutely not doing the research on this one, but I'm willing to bet less than 100 total coaches have won state championships since he was hired at PNG. In that time coaches in Texas have coached approximately 39000 football seasons, and less than 100 of them have a state title. Those titles happen for different reasons, whether it be talent, coaching, cheating, recruiting, or a combination of all of these things, but one thing is absolutely certain: there is no coach in the state, country, or world, that can take a school with a fraction of the talent of most of the teams they'll meet in the playoffs and lead them to state. There comes a point where the gulf in talent is too much for any team or coach to overcome. Scott Surratt could take over WOS tomorrow and lead them to frequent state championships from now until he decides to retire. The talent is there, the community support is there. He could take over PNG tomorrow and he'd never consistently lead them to a state anything, at least until reallignments drastically change the path that PNG has to take. For many teams their only shot at a deep run is a fluke situation, and that's certainly where PNG is. In the classes 4A and below a team can have a special class and make a deep run or a couple of deep runs, and a coach or team can overachieve and maybe make a magical run. but in 5A and above there are too many schools that field college teams every season. PNG isn't going to have a coach come in and magically make them capable of making deep runs against teams with 10+ D1 players, with several more D2 and D3 quality players, when PNG is fielding a D1 player or two every few years. As a matter of fact, PNG could combine their talent pool with Nederland and they're STILL not going to state. The idea that any coach that doesn't take his team to state hasn't succeeded is laughable. There are about 3 dozen schools in Texas out of 3000 that can use that as a realistic measuring stick for the success of their coaches.

Not fast at all. PNG doesn't have near the talent level comparable to their classification that Carthage does. Plus, Surratt already makes over $150k at Carthage and I doubt PNG can touch that. They would probably feel the same way BH does about Westerberg and his titles at Allen.

Well, I can say It now. I told you so……. No need to argue on the next coach. The 2 finalists are names we all know. BF did his time, although I’ve never been a fan, I hate to see his kid not finish up along with 80% of the starters back. If anyone for one second thinks he is leaving because he wants to, your crazy. 80% of your team back, fresh off a 3rd round, with realignment in our favor…. Use common sense folks. Never a good time to lose you coach, unless you want him gone, but right now would be an absolute awful time for PNG with the upcoming realignment. A lot of y'all are talking about what PNG can or can't do RIGHT NOW but are failing to look forward, like to February 3rd? Outside of FB Marshall and Liberty Hill, who will probably be moved to region 3 this realignment, who else would you point to in the southern half of the state in 5A-D2 that would be a hands down favorite over PNG next year? Maybe one of the Corpus schools in the semis? They already beat Montgomery who's losing their entire offense anyway, Brenham isn't what they once were, Huntsville is probably about to slide some and you watched a team you beat last year donkey stomp FB Marshall in bi-district. I said it four years ago when it happened but splitting 5A was a Godsend for SETX and other areas of the state where the growth is slow to stagnant. 6A is 6A, 5A-D1 is JV 6A for your growing suburban areas about to move up to the top class like Crosby and BH. However, 5A-D2 is made for schools that just opened like Lake Creek and ones that have "mature" populations like the SETX and East Texas 5A's. I'm not saying PNG can win state or even the region but it's a mistake to think that they shouldn't be extremely competitive for the foreseeable future. Same goes for some others.

Here’s my question fellow posters. Is this a pandemic or a plan-demic? Myself, I’m going with the latter. Still a question in my mind of the motive, but I think it was planned. The motive? Did China use it to start the destruction of America? Was it, for them, just a way to expedite population control? And my front runner, to create chaos in the US to get Trump out of office? Trump stood up to China. He was a thorn in their side, so in cooperation with the Democratic Party, they get the ball rolling releasing Covid. Far fetched you say? A decade ago I’d agree, but now there’s something very evil and sinister with the Democrats. Almost everything they do is bad for America. Divide Americans by race & class. Put stumbling blocks for Christians attending Church. Embrace wokeness, even in our military. And even though the press won’t admit it, actually caused the deaths of thousands in Nursing Homes, primarily in NY & NJ. Destroying our history by removing historical statues (just another form of book burning). Encouraging young kids to question their gender. Defund the police to create anarchy in our biggest cities. Newton better count their blessings that they didn’t consult with Reagan in the late 70’s, through the 80’s and 90’s. In 1974 Newton won state, only to have Coach Lyndee Thompson leave to go to another school. So they promote the offensive coordinator for the 1975 season. It took Newton 23 years to win another state championship. So according to Reagan, Curtis Barbay, the 8th all-time winningest coach in the state of Texas woulda been canned in the mid-80’s for not delivering a state title. Other schools like Hampshire-Fannett has done what you advocate. HF had UIL hall-of-fame coach Les Koenning, who is one of the most respected coaches in the state of Texas, all time, as their head coach. In 1974, HF was #1 in the state. They lose to #2 Newton (see above) in the 1st round of the playoffs. In 1975, HF was #1 again, only to lose in the 4th round, to the eventual state runner-ups. So in 2 years Les Koenning went 23-2, and people in the community were up in arms, and he didn’t get renewed. HF has never sniffed that success again. Winning a state title is much harder than you make it out to be. Sometimes perspective is hard to come by and keep. Ask Randy Allen at Highland Park… he didn’t win a title at Brownwood, following Gordon Wood. He also didn’t win one at Abilene Cooper. Turns out he knows how to coach despite not winning a title. Same with Phil Danaher and countless others.

You act like winning a state championship is as easy as a district championship. Only one wins every year. And according to your logic there would be well over 1,300 coaching openings every few years when a coach wins no state titles. Don’t know if you’ve ever coached, but sometimes bringing a team to the 2nd or 3rd round, and getting a team to play way above their talent level, is a helluva coaching job. If you think PN-G was gonna beat Crosby, Liberty Hill, or SOC then surely you must think they could beat Beaumont United in basketball too!

The problem most Mustangs have is the way the hiring process went. Everyone knew Hickman was the predetermined choice and that nobody else had a chance. Including the other coaches on staff that have been there for longer. The experience factor may not be too much for Hickman to overcome. He has been here for 6 years and likely learned more under CT than he did as Silsbee DC. 112% committed to whoever the new coach is. Nothing is set in stone. But the agenda for Monday's board meeting will make it official. There's a chance for citizens to speak, and I believe some will have much to say on this issue. Another thought... with all the racism claims being made recently. Perhaps CT said, "here you go, I'm out, have fun". The only thing against that is the man has so much pride in what he and others have built here. I can't see him handing over the keys to the bus knowing it's heading for a collision.

I’ll never forget how it started with Faircloth. Playing Gregory -Portland in the Alamodome. We traveled to SA with a big group and went to the game. 4th Q, 4th and a foot. Faircloth decides to keep QB in shotgun and attempts to run a QB draw and they get stopped and lose the game.😂 i thought he was gonna be ran off after that call, but he hung in and found a way for 13 years. It’s definitely been a roller coaster ride on the Reservation.

After watching the epic battle last night between Allen and Mahomes I find it pretty disheartening that Dak is somehow making nearly the same money they are. I don't think he's a bad qb, and he's great against bad teams, but the fact that he's the 3rd highest paid qb behind them (and just barely behind them) shows how bad the cowboys got scalped.

That’s the goal in every program. That’s what they attempt to sell to the kids, whether it’s achievable or not. The coaches ARE NOT stupid. They know the teams they have, and the competition they face. As a fan you can want the same. Just have realistic expectations. A wish, want, or expectation are not the same. Was it achievable or reasonable for PNG to beat Crosby? What about South Oak Cliff? Could they have played Crosby tougher? Probably! But beat them, absolutely not. If you watched the game, you clearly saw that. I watch on Texan Live from Santa Rosa Beach, FL. PNG wasn’t beating Crosby with Faircloth, or Jimmy Johnson. Have realistic expectations.

Are you joking PNG needs to be in. 4a D1 ? PNG has 566 kids more then LCM. Png also has 138 more kids then Nederland. PNG doesn’t need to come down. PNG glory days might just be long gone or maybe they will have a good season here or there. But for the most part Setx has average football teams compared to certain parts of the state. Yes you will have a extremely talented group come in here and there but PNG is not Katy high, west lake, Highland Park or Aledo. All those schools are near large cities so recruitment is there.

Peevy lives in orange. Wife is LCM alum and has probably the most community support in the area. I don’t see him going over there. LCM is working on the bond for facilities. We will most likely be taking in Orangefield and WOS recruits😂
