  1. There is better reception in a war shelter in Bucharest than the Buna gym.

  2. I saw video of that last play. That was no "touch" foul. The Buna player completely displaced the Orangefield player on the inbounds play. I don't know how the game was called (tight or loose) but that was definitely a foul and was correctly called. Even the Buna player knew he had screwed up and was over aggressive going for the ball.

As far as PNG goes, they knew that had a lot of senior talent coming back this season even before Faircloth got run off. There were high expectations even then. We will see what happens this year.

  5. Back to the subject at hand - I'm protesting Buna's one point loss against Orangefiled because Buna had a really good practice the ngiht before and I think they should be declared the winner.

  6. With the Indians being in Crosby tonight I got to take this one in as I have family in Buna. There were 3 tough calls down the stretch with 2 of them going the cougars way. I'm not sure the Cougars led very much in this one, Connell hit a huge shot to tie the game but the play that happened afterward was absolutely a foul. The cougars are solid, and have nothing to hang their heads about.

We have very capable kids… however we are CLEARLY undersized versus nearly every team we play… anyone who has watched much Vidor football can see that easily… why is it so hard to see that Mathews and his system has helped Vidor see VASTLY more success than at any other time in their history… just the last 12 years alone were far more successful than any other 12 year period in Vidor history… 68-56… 7 playoff appearances and two district titles (one in 5A)… We’d love to see deep playoff runs every year… but Vidor just like nearly all other high schools for a number of reasons hasn’t had that kind of success for a number of reasons the way some of you are acting you’d think Vidor was the only team in Region 5 that doesn’t go 3 rounds every year… heck I don’t even remember when some of these schools were relevant… Lumberton put together a nice run this season and looks strong for one more season… but overall they’ve been her cellar dweller for the last couple decades… BC has struggled to find any solid footing and apparently they brought in a wizard to bring them back to the promised land but alas even the highly touted gurus can’t turn them around… so I’d love to see that magical combination of talent, speed, size, coaching, and attitude hit Vidor… but it’s just not as simple as some of you paint it

I agree with you that coaching is the deciding factor when talent is relatively similar. Coaching will even overcome a slightly higher degree of talent.. but there's a limit to that. Surely even you don't think the greatest 2A coach in all of existence with the best 2A team to have ever played can beat Northshore as they are right now.

Jeez. Read slowly... SOC..........HAS..........7..........TOP..........100..........RECRUITS. Do you understand what it's saying when it says TOP 100 recruits? You aren't heavily recruited by "out dawging" somebody. It's speed, strength, skill, size, or all of them.

Nederland was in that boat before Neumann showed up, he showed them a different path. Look at Neds record for the 20 years before 1994. And I am not backing Reagan's off the wall theories, they also had some talent come up through the ranks during those years. But you have to know how to use that talent as well.

  17. Yea, that’s the final score. BU was in trouble in this second half. Porchia got his 4th foul early in the 3rd period and Dotson had cramp issues almost the whole second half. He kept coming in with big plays though. Payia played big with some key rebounds and putbacks late. And of course, Yates just being Yates. Stepped up and lead this late charge to put this game away. Still things to work on, but I’m quite satisfied with this win.

  19. This is true. While OF and Anahuac have an Ace at the top of their staff, Buna does as well in Kale Knox. (Supergold MVP and District POTY last season.) Buna will also have Jr. Carson Burks returning from an elbow injury. He was a huge part of the playoff run in 2021 as a freshman, and did not pitch or play last season. Same goes for Denton Peveto who played but was unable to pitch last season. Sophomore Daniel Midkiff was the number 2 starter last season. He notched shutouts of Central Heights and Anderson-Shiro in the playoffs. I'd argue that collectively, Buna has more pitching than anyone in this district. Knox is more than capable of going toe to toe with Bodin or Edmonds.

players > coaching. Way more often than not. players + coaching + level of competition = wins. Missing any of the 3 is likely detrimental. Let's stay on Lumberton. A couple years ago they won the district championship in basketball. Their coach was unanimous COY for the district. Not so much as a sniff the next year... or since. What happened? Same exact coach. Still Lumberton kids. Oooohh.. that's right. They had a 6'6 D1 signee on the team. Funny how kids make coaches successful. Disclaimer: I know Coach Mitchell personally and think he does a fantastic job. But... it takes players to have success. I'm positive you'll ignore the example I just gave and the endless others.. but it doesn't change anything.

  21. It’s unbelievable how miserable people are and unwilling to congratulate a man on job well done. Coach Mathews did a phenomenal job as AD/HC for Vidor but a few select individuals always want to talk about wins and loses… and before those people say it’s a sports and someone has to win and lose, you are right but sports is so much more than being about winning and losing. Sports are about teaching someone to be accountable, a team player, leadership, and so on. So before you chime in and focus solely on wins and loses…. Let’s see your win, loss record (and little league doesn’t count) or if y’all know so much about being a AD/HC let’s see those applications and credentials.

He was the best thing that has ever happen to Vidor football in my memory. Always positive. Stands were always full. Personally, I didn't know the guy, but I know he was well respected all around SE Texas. You don't have to go deep in the playoffs to have an affect on these young men. God speed Coach Matthews.

You can measure a coaches successes in many ways, by wins, championships, or in lives changed. Wins are good, Championships are great, but there is no substitute to changing a young athletes life. I’ll take a good coach who can mold a young athletes life, over a great coach that gets wins but doesn’t connect with his players.

  29. There are always and will always be exceptions to the rule. Especially when a school gets a run of D1 commits through the program. Either way.. it's documented that household income, school tax base, and poverty correlate to success in athletics. To ignore that is just naïve. You should take a field trip to other areas of the state and look at what poor schools are competing with. State of art facilities, immaculate neighborhoods, brand new businesses, etc. Player A (6'4 220) has two working parents, attends summer camps/workouts around the country, has a dietician, has a personal trainer, has a private tutor, has 24hr access to the nicest facilities money can buy, has 3+ of the most nutritious meals imaginable that are specifically designed for health/performance, and has a team full of friends/teammates with the same exact life. Player B (6'4 220) has to work summers/weekends to help around the house, can't afford sports camp, eats whatever happens to be in the house, lifts/trains alone in a 30 year old weight room when he can find a ride, has zero teammates willing to put in extra work with him. Who has the head start, Player A or Player B? If you don't think that and similar scenarios play out across the state... you're either ignorant or stubborn. [Hidden Content]

  31. I can’t think of another fan base that shows up to argue “y’all don’t understand… we’re losers. Always have been, always gonna be.” I’m over here arguing that we can be great from time to time if we could get some coaching, community support, and more of our athletes to play football AND baseball. Vidor posters have made it clear that there are no expectations of success in the community over there.

  32. Your right it’s not simple, it’s very complicated and many many factors play a part even little issues over time create bigger issues….many fail to see the lil issues because they seem insignificant at the present time whether it be then or now. Our luxuries and conveniences are a manipulative enemy and over the course of time we will lose whether it be this generation or the next so on and so forth, but it will happen. Technology has sped up indoctrination and confusion no matter what side you sit on. look at what children deal with now? They are the future…..but what does that future look like?

If Surratt came to Vidor, Vidor would immediately do things it has never done in its history. Nearly all of Vidor’s problems can be solved with coaching. Instead, everyone blames the kids. As if there’s some big genetic difference between Vidor and PNG and Nederland (and when Vidor was in our district, except for the last few years they had the same size school as PNG). Before Hurricane Harvey, Vidor was sitting right at around 1400 kids. All respect to Coach Matthews, but I think Vidor runs their gimmick offense because Coach Matthews doesn’t know how to teach the skills necessary to run anything else. Vidor kids can run whatever their coach can or will teach them to run. Vidor players could blow everyone’s minds if their leadership believed they could.

Still didn't answer either question. Does the new coach get credit for someone else's seniors? Will he replicate this year's success without the 35 senior's he's losing?

  42. When you're 20-8, and 6 of your 8 losses have come to 6A schools (5 of those with solid to excellent records), and your other two have come to good 5A schools, I think top-25 is okay. They could've easily scheduled a couple of creampuff tournaments and be 26-2 right now.

  43. Agree 100% with both statements in bold, especially the first one. There were a lot of folks that had no idea the train wreck that was coming when Biden was elected, but there were a lot of us that were not surprised how things turned out, we had already seen the template under Obama. As to the second, you can say that about most constituents as well, no party is perfect, you have to go with what aligns as best with your ideology, or choose to have no voice at all. The shame of it is, the Republican platform is very close to my ideology, but the implementation of it by Washington Republicans is not. Good post.

I sure hope we get someone in here that will implement a fast paced spread attack. I heard we had multiple guys run 4.4 - 4.65 in the 40 this year. I mean, look at our linemen, they are built for 2 pt stances and pass setting. In the spread, we will beat LCM by at least 4 tds. some of you all are hilarious. we don't have to be slot-t, but we defenitly need to be run based and ball control on offense. that is the best defense we have.
