    Nederland Coaching

Scott Rich is a good coach. I don't think he's the problem. In my opinion, there are a few key factors to consider when gauging Nederland's success this season. The obvious ones are the injuries, the youth and inexperience of this Bulldogs team, and the fallout from the coaching change. But the most significant, long term factor--and the most overlooked, in my opinion--is the difference in enrollment. PN-G is sitting just a hair over 1,700 students in total enrollment, which is squarely in the middle of the 5A enrollment spectrum and in the upper half of the 5A-DII classification. Nederland is sitting a hair over 1.400 students, which is less than a hundred students above the dividing line between 5A-DII and 4A-DI. To put that in perspective, when I was in school 15 years ago, PN-G and Nederland were both hovering around the 1,400 student enrollment mark. PN-GISD has soaked up all the growth in Mid-County while Nederland ISD's enrollment has been stagnant. We could debate why and it's probably a confluence of factors, not just any one, single reason. But whatever the cause, the simple fact is that Nederland's talent pool isn't as strong as its competition on average.

  2. I have updated this list to reflect the results from Week 10. Also, where seeds have been determined, I have those teams listed in that order. Otherwise they will be listed alphabetically. Here are the teams that have clinched thru Week 10: 23-6A DI #1 North Shore DI #2 Atascocita DII #1 CE King DII #2 Summer Creek 9-5A DI #1 Port Arthur Memorial (district champs) 11-5A DI #1 La Porte, Angleton, Crosby, #4 Friendswood 8-5A DII #1 Port Neches-Groves #2 Montgomery #3 Huntsville 10-4A DI Bridge City, Huffman, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Lumberton 9-4A DII Hamshire-Fannett, Shepherd, Silsbee, West Orange-Stark 9-3A DI #1 Fairfield 10-3A DI #1 Hardin, #2 Orangefield, #3 East Chambers 12-3A DII #1 Newton, Kountze, Woodville 11-2A DI #1 San Augustine, Garrison, Joaquin 12-2A DII #1 West Sabine, Deweyville, Evadale 12-1A DI #1 Chester 34 teams have clinched (13 in Week 10). Still need 12 more. 23-6A, 11-5A DI, 10-4A DI and 9-4A DII has all 4 of their playoff spots clinched. Week 11 will be do or die time for some teams in contention.

I agree......And the elephant in the room, " Nederland is YOUNG'' is really true. Rich is in a tough spot as his measuring stick is the guy across the tracks. The dogs need coordinators, let's see if this happens.

So what would you do differently than Coach Rich and his staff? What scheme would you base out of? Player-wise who would you put where and why? Gotta have WHY with your viewpoint from the COUCH.

  6. I wouldn’t call last season “very good.” Other than beating PNG, there’s not much to point at. They dropped their last three games, including getting pummeled in the first round. And, I disagree that Nederland is outmanned athletically. They aren’t. They’re big, well-conditioned, they run to the ball. They can toe up physically with anyone in the district. Nederland doesn’t need to wait for a better crop of players. They have good players right now. The problem is entirely in execution, and that’s on the coaches.

  7. Last week of the regular season is upon us. One last chance to grab a playoff spot, a district title or higher seed. Here are some of the important games for Week 11: 9-5A DI Beaumont United at Baytown Sterling (Thursday) Loser of this game is out; winner is in with a West Brook loss Barbers Hill at Beaumont West Brook Barbers Hill in with a win; WB has to win to have any chance at playoffs. A loss by Bruins ends their season. 11-5A DI Crosby at Angleton for the #2 seed 8-5A DII Dayton at PN-G Dayton in with a win and Lake Creek loss; Dayton loss & LC loss, three way tie for final spot with West Fork Lake Creek at West Fork LC in with a win; WF has to win along with a Dayton loss to force three way tie for 4th. 10-4A DI Bridge City at Huffman winner is #1 or #2 seed, loser is #3 or #4 seed. BC is #1 with a win and Lumberton win. Huffman is #1 with a win and an LC-M win LC-M at Lumberton winner is #1 or #2 seed, loser is #3 or #4 seed. LC-M is #1 with a win and a BC win. Lumberton is #1 with a win and a Huffman win. 9-4A DII Hamshire-Fannett at WO-S WO-S clinches out right DC with win; HF win by 10 or more, #2 seed, win by 9 or less, #3 seed. HF can get #1 seed with a win and a Silsbee loss. Silsbee at Shepherd Silsbee win along with an HF win of any amount, #1 seed. Shepherd has to win by 16 or more along with an HF loss to have any shot of a higher seed of 4th. 9-3A DI Crockett at Fairfield Crockett in with a win or a Teague loss. If Crockett beats Fairfield and Teague wins, then Crockett is the 3 seed. If Crockett beats Fairfield and Diboll beats Teague. Crockett is the 4 seed. A Crockett loss and a Diboll loss would end Crockett's season. Teague at Diboll winner is in. Diboll win and they are #3 seed. Teague win they are #4 seed unless Crockett loses then they are #3 seed. 10-3A DI Anahuac at Coldspring Anahuac in with a win or a Kirbyville loss Hardin at Kirbyville Kirbyville in with a win and an Anahuac loss 12-3A DII Woodville at Kountze winner is #2 seed, loser #3 seed New Waverly at Trinity Trinity in with a win; NW win will force three way with Trinity, Anderson-Shiro for 4th. 11-2A DI Garrison at Joaquin winner is #2 seed, loser #3 Shelbyville at Hemphill Shelbyville in with win or Timpson loss San Augustine at Timpson Timpson in with a win and a Shelbyville loss 12-2A DII Colmesneil at West Hardin winner is in, loser out 12-1A DI Apple Springs at Burkeville winner in, loser out

  10. Thanks for bringing the numbers up. In several cases the enrollment doesn't reflect the athletic participation. Even though Nederland is around 1400 kids, i would bet they have more kids in their high school program than Memorial. No one ever talks about the amazing job PA has been able to do. They are around 1700 students also, but over half of their enrollment in hispanic, with absolutely no interest in American football. For many, english is their second language. So while Memorial plays in 5A-D1, their program has the involvement of a Silsbee..........and they still handle business. Maybe Nederland doesn't have as many students enrolled, but they definitely compete in program size & participation....for now. I disagree Rich is a good coach. Maybe a good assistant. But as your first head coaching job, this one might not be the one. Maybe a smaller school, with less visibility and a weaker district. I think he's a good guy, just in over his head. He should have started at an Evadale, not the #1 high school rivalry in the nation.

  11. First, if you don't have a quarterback that can throw...run an offense that caters to his talents. Option, Wing T, whatever.....figure it out by properly evaluating the talent you have on hand. Put the fullback back in the game. Stoker did a good job last year at FB lead blocking for Thomas, and picking up tough yards on dive plays. Rich moved him to TE, barely touched the ball this year. Just one of many bad decisions. Second, if your offense keeps the defense on the field all night, there should be more than the first team touching the field. Keep fresh kids rotating on the field without lowering the intensity/ability. First team is tired. I have more info, but I will end with, "The Standard, Is The Standard". If Rich is going to have expectations for participation, it should be across the board. Depending on the player/parent/donor.......some are held to different standards.

  14. Here is a list of the teams that have clinched the playoffs with two weeks left of the regular season. This list is only teams that have actually clinched. Not teams that are likely to make playoffs or could or should. Just the ones that HAVE punched their ticket to the playoffs. Teams are listed in alphabetical order and not by seed. Lot's of seeding still left to be determined. 23-6A CE King, North Shore 9-5A DI Port Arthur Memorial (district champs) 11-5A DI Angleton, La Porte 8-5A DII Montgomery, Port Neches-Groves 10-4A DI Bridge City, Huffman, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Lumberton 9-4A DII West Orange-Stark 9-3A DI Fairfield 10-3A DI East Chambers, Hardin 12-3A DII Newton, Woodville 11-2A DI San Augustine 12-2A DII Evadale, West Sabine 12-1A DI Chester 21 teams have clinched. Still need 25 more. 10-4A DI has all 4 of their playoff spots clinched. Last two weeks of the season will be very interesting.

  15. La Marque is better than they have been for sure… but yeah HF is probably a 3 score favorite vs them
    1 point
  16. I don't know exactly what point spread = a so-called blowout, but I didn't expect as close a game as it turned out to be, although Montgomery always plays PNG a good game. This one was a real barn burner. BTW the score in the thread title ain't right.

  17. HF will be favored against La Marque. So I guess we’ll see. It’s hard to judge how good they are because most of their schedule is against awful teams. Their one common opponent is Hitchcock, who blew LM out, and who HF beat.

    Nederland Coaching

The season is a combination of coaching and poor athletic ability. The QB struggles big time passing. If he does throw a decent pass the receivers drop it more times than they catch it. The LB’er and secondary play is about as bad as you can get. The tackling is atrocious (how many missed tackles on Huntsville’s last 2 offensive TD’s) Yes I would say a definite combination of coaching and poor athletic ability

    Week 10

Manning looked VERY good. That no-call was ridiculous. Instead of a first down and eating up however much more clock and then at worst getting a close FG attempt Texas missed a 51-yarder instead. Vandy scored on the next play. The score doesn’t definitely doesn’t show how well Texas played for the first 3 1/2 quarters.

Colorado is just not a well coached team. All those dudes that were successful at the highest levels as players don't always make good coaches. Prime needs to hire real coaches and not "flash hire" guys. Zero player development.

    LCM VS LUMBERTON

Winner of this game will get either the 1 or 2 seed Loser will get either 3 or 4 Depends on what happens with BC/Huffman. All 4 teams are tied at 5-1 coming into the last week. Final seedings will be determined by winners/losers of both games and their head to head match up with the result of the BC/HH game. Should be a good game.

    1 point
  28. This is a good final game before the playoffs. Dayton’s offense is dynamic. Not as good as Montgomery’s, but good enough to present a different kind of challenge, better than the offenses we’ll see through at least the first two rounds of the playoffs. Their defense isn’t good, so we’ll get our points. Dayton is still alive for the playoffs (if they win and West Fork beats Lake Creek) so there’s something they have to play for beyond bragging rights. It should be a good game, but PNG pulls away in the second half to win 42-21. Let’s just hope everyone comes out healthy.

Kids leaving the program is a first I heard of that one… both freshman and JV football teams will be District Champs… tons of sophomores on varsity getting some serious minutes… I find it very hard to believe that kids are leaving the program… in fact a few kids came back into the program…

  32. They had a very good season last year. People who instantly blame the coaches every time something goes wrong show their ignorance regarding athletics. Most nights they are outmanned athletically, success isn’t always linear Let’s give the guy a 4 year window to see a freshman class through before we claim he isn’t doing anything

  34. Similar matchup up to the Silsbee game for the horns. Obviously that didn’t go well for us, but we did look considerably better in the second half. HF is good enough to win this matchup, but WOS is the clear favorite. I’m gonna say WOS 34, Horns 21. Hope I’m wrong.

  35. The interesting thing to me about that play (Jackson's TD) was that Coach ran it, he is usually pretty conservative and after getting a false start penalty, it would make sense to just take a knee, especially in light of the fact that PNG was getting the ball to start the second half. The mental effect on Montgomery had to be, something like,"What do we have to do to beat these guys? " IMO the play of the game.

  37. It is really sad that so many grown people can't take care of themselves. I realize some people have disabilities that prevent them from working and they need help. However, we shouldn't pay people to stay at home and have babies and condition them to live off the government. Those type programs should have strict limits.

  40. Let's not kid ourselves, Barrow was fired after 7 years because he was still producing a bad product. Let's not forget Rich was 60 seconds from being the top seed last year. Now, he hasn't even finished his 2nd year. Heck, Neumann didn't set the world on fire his first 4 years. We need to give him a chance and see what next year looks like. We should see a noticeable improvement!
    1 point
  41. If Coach Rich and staff and the Bulldogs are going to have any success in the future, they better address major issues on defense, find a secondary and LB’er coach and on offense find a QB that can throw and receivers that can catch. Their passing game poor!

  42. Maaaan that wasn't a good showing at all by Nederland!! Is everyone sure this was the right hire for HC, especially with this record and tonight's performance? I remember the news were saying that the Nederland admin did a big search for the best hire for the new HC and all this. And this is what we get!?
