  1. PNG could become the Southeast Texas version of Katy. I see y’all going to state a lot more in the future. Administration did a good job hiring Coach Joseph.

  3. Ok SETX family Leaving for Dallas. I say thank you again from the bottom of my heart. I truly hope someday that each and every one of your communties get a chance to play for State. Teams like WOS, BWB, Nederland, Crosby, Dayton, Newton, San Augustine, Bridge City, and other communities that have made it to State have the chace to do it again. I make this promise if at all possible I will be there to support you. WOS please continue to lead the way. SILSBEE you are so close. Keep plugging away you will be there soon. Dayton our purple brothers and sisters its past time you returned back to the Dayton of old. Beaumont and Port Arthur you are both loaded and capable of making state. I look forward to the day it all clicks and you are there as proud communities. The one thing I have learned is it takes a lot to make it to the SC but one important factor our coaching staff has taught me is that you have to believe that you came make it to state. Another thing WOS has taught me is that to make it ti State you have to have a good defense. I wish, hope and pray that each and every SETX schools has this opportunity some day. Know that the support from our big community has been noticed by the PNG community. You all have been amazing. Thank you again. Lastly I would like to say thank you to the Nederland community. So much support from you shows the bond of playinh for 100 times. The really cool shirts you have made honors us. We welcome all of you to the game and appreciate all of your support. Win or lose we are so thankful for you all. Thanks Setxsports.com for your coverage and dedication to our kiddos in the coverage area. You are an amazing bunch. Lastly lets go Indians. Thank you all and God Bless.

  4. No. Great coaches don't change their scheme based on 1 player. You put that player in the right spot within the scheme in place...

  6. I will say I don’t think Glenn Rose was that great… that region in general was super weak IMO… I think Bellville, Jasper, Silsbee, Cuero, Gilmer, Carthage, PG, Wimberley, and maybe others all would’ve won that region. From a lot of things I’ve read I think several Gilmer fans are underestimating Bellville still… I’m still seeing “Bellville hasn’t played anyone” which is baffling lol either way I wanna wish good luck and safe travels to the Gilmer fans and team @lostaussie

  11. Go Indians!! This Bulldog made it to the last 3 games but I have a wedding tomorrow so gonna have to miss this one but hopefully I have time to watch online! We are on way to Dallas area as well and love seeing all the purple at Buccees and on the road! Win it all PNG!

  12. It's been posted because action need to be taken. No one is held accountable anymore for anything. I have told multiple koff people congrats on a great season and that they were the better team last night. Jones is a great player and led his team well. But wrong is wrong and was the ultimate sign of disrespect. I start one of these years ago when a riesel player did the same thing. And we won that game so it's not about winning or losing its bigger then that.

  15. Carthage also has the special talent many other schools don’t. Athletic talent. A great coaching job at HJ or Liberty would be the 3rd or 4th round. Reggie Samples, Claude Mathis, or Gary Joseph could come to Beaumont United and a great coaching job would be to get 2nd or 3rd in that district. Some people live in reality, others fantasy.

  18. That got a lil heated. The topic is OF job opening. They're not getting any elite coach no matter whose or whats definition one uses. They'll be doing good to get an assistant from a local program.

  19. Do you think Surratt’s are everywhere? You start gauging coaches off of what he’s done, and no one’s job will be safe. Do you think Deweyville, or Evadale is gonna compete with Mart and make it to state?

    A Tale of Two Cities

Just a thought here and I understand there might be some controversy around this. I think Crosby's implosion and PNG's ascension should teach us a couple very important lessons. 1) We overvalue the effect of athletes (bo's and joes) on the success of a program and undervalue the effect of coaching. 2) Great coaches will get the enrollment involved and working. At the end of the day the single most important thing for late playoff success is depth and coaching. Yes losing a great QB/RB/WR/LB can end a season early but if you don't have depth at all the "not superstar" positions and if the backups aren't just as willing, able and wanting to play as the starters you cannot have success at the highest levels. I think this is true because of a couple of reasons, Winner win. If you are successful and win others want to be a part of that, from that 6'8 300 lbs kid that's never touched a football to that 5'6 kid who will run through a wall to get his chance. They all are important and they all need to feel like part of the team. If you win then no one cares about being the backup. If you win people will be happy to just be on the team. If you win you can have 65 athletes on Varsity every single year. Even a team without elite athletics' talent can execute plays at a high level if they are well coached. Practice times, culture of work, and accountability set the standards for developing 14 year old's into athletic 17 years old's. That being said great coaches can overcome program deficiencies that previously existed. Crosby and PNG prove this. PNG has no more talent now than it has for the last decade. Crosby has no less talent than it has for the last decade. It's about how that talent is coached, brought through the system, and executes daily. My ramblings.

  25. On the Saban front, he did not start winning national championships until he got top talent to come to the school. If he was the difference, then why didn't he win in the NFL where the talent was pretty much equal? I give Saban a ton of credit for winning those championships. But you just can't insert him anywhere and think he will win championships there too. That's not being realistic.

  29. I didn't say I was shocked. I said I was disappointed. Kinda like how you started a special thread just to crucify him, and how certain folks from franklin are in every franklin/malakoff post on facebook bringing it up. I agree it was disrespectful, and I wouldn't be mad if he lost his mvp or got suspended several games. but so is the fact that very few franklin folks are giving any credit to Malakoff for a fantastic season and straight up beating y'all, but are instead harping on this incident. it was ridiculous, but it's also a footnote, not the main story.

Tell me if you agree with this: There are those here that says it’s about the talent and not the coaching. Therefore these same people feel that all coaches are the same. You know, they can be championship type coaches if they just had the talent. Now, it’s gotten to the point some say even Saban couldn’t win at Westbrook or United. So, here’s the amazing point: These same people are actually saying there’s no difference between Saban and the coaches at Westbrook and United! You know, it’s because of the talent. Thoughts?!

  39. AGAIN wins and losses are only a small part of what I want for my kids. I want someone that teaches more than X's and O's. I want someone who makes a difference cause well all that teenagers know it all and moms and dads know nothing. I want someone who teaches/coaches through adversity and help make an impression on a teenagers life.

  40. Man... you are sad. Only about wins and losses. Nothing more, nothing less. Such a simple mind. Maybe one day you'll be able to see that coaches are much more than wins and losses.

  44. I actually posted that to prove that I was indeed a varsity coach contrary to what some on here believe…never came on here & said how good of a coach I was. No need to do that I have 3 state championship rings to validate me. So yeah you did indeed make that up, just like you made up me saying coaching doesn’t matter lol

Why then, did PnG get obliterated in the 3rd round in 2021 (we could barely make a tackle), bring back most of the same key players, and go straight to state the next year? And then, with a new crop of guys, we go straight back? Conventional wisdom said the Mid County schools had no hope to recreate the success of the 70s. Look at us now. The main variable that changed was the coaching. PNG went from a team that couldn’t even sort of hang with the best, to a team that could beat the best. Coaching is the most important factor, most of the time. I refuse to believe that West Orange suddenly doesn’t have good players. What - was there a chemical leak in the hospital nursery exactly sixteen years ago? Did the gene pool change? What about Hampshire Fannet? They went from bottom-dwelling nobodies to a disciplined, smart, tough, athletic unit - They just happen to have good players now?

Talent > Coaching. There could be several reasons for WOS struggles but talent is the overwhelming greatest factor for ever.

  48. A vert special memory for me my grandfather took me to the game and Ive since lost him. He was a Silsbee graduate and really liked Newton. He lived at Sam Rayburn near Plum Ridge and went to a few Newton games. He was a standout on the 1943 and 44 Silsbee basketball teams. He had a scholarship to Lamar and then 82 years ago yesterday happened and they cancelled Lamar basketball because of the war. He never got to play in college. Anyways I digress. It is one of my fondest memories watching Newton win state.
