  5. Can we get back to talking about Nederland’s new football coach? I know very little about him. I don’t feel like reading every post. Thanks.

  8. No sport has nearly the aggregate amount of emotion around it like football. When PNg won state in baseball (also, I’m just realizing PNG won state in two sports in a six year stretch - That’s pretty cool) everyone was extremely excited and proud. But it wasn’t even close to the near-religious, transcendent breath of joy that opened up across the entire PNG community when we won in football. Football is king at most schools. If coaches chose their jobs only on lack of pressure, they’d all be fighting for non-football spots.

    Hemphill is open

The problem with Hemphill seems to be a major exit in high school enrollment. Snapshot number went from 273 down to 221. A drop of 52 kids. Hemphill lost their JV team in the middle of the year, had to combine with varsity. Even going to class 2A1 you need a JV program. Hopefully they have a large 8 th grade moving up. Would like to know the reason for the big drop in high school. Hemphill is a good place to live and the school has money. Hemphill just lost a good coach. Wishing my neighbor to the north the best.

  15. The bonds are the big issue. Yes PNG has more money, but they also spend it wisely and the community is behind them. Nederland is spending $32 mil more than PNG on the last bond. PNG got rid of 2 schools (which cut overhead) and built 4 brand new state of the art schools. Nederland wouldn’t get rid of 100 yr old “historic” buildings because someone’s great grandma went to school there. Instead they piece milled 4 old schools together and it looks awful. They did get a new HS and 3 connex boxes for a press box though for $32 mil over what PNG paid.

  16. When I went to academic competitions in Nederland their schools were piss poor work. I went on a tirade here and got shot down. Ned deserves better.

  17. Haha what? Didn't Nederland play West Orange Stark, Port Arthur Memorial, and Silsbee last year and the year before in non district? Who do you want them to play Katy High school, North Shore, and Atascocita? You must not be from around here if you think that Nederland hasn't played anyone for non district.

  18. I know PN-G is a football school first and foremost - 28 district titles, 16 seasons with ten or more wins, ten regional titles, eight state championship appearances and four state titles speak to that - but we really are blessed with an embarrassment of athletic riches at PN-G. The baseball program has made four state championship appearances and won it once; three of those appearances and the victory have all occurred in the last 25 years. The softball team has made two state championship appearances, both in the last 25 years. The volleyball team is 3-0 in state championship games. For most of the last fifteen years, both the boys' and girls' soccer programs have been major regional powers, making regional final appearances several times. If I recall correctly, there was one season where both teams made it to the regional final. We've fielded two or three state champions in various track activities plus a few dozen more state track meet qualifiers, and are always competitive in powerlifting. We used to be a real power in tennis. Sports-wise, basketball is really the only area where PN-G has consistently underperformed. Add in all the academic accolades - the years of blue ribbon designations, thirteen straight district titles in UIL academics from 2001 to 2013 and several consecutive years of dozens of kids advancing to regionals, a handful to state and one kid winning a gold medal in creative writing at the state UIL meet. For several years, PN-G offered more dual credit hours than any other local high school, Kelly included. And then there's the performing arts. The band has made, what, four trips to the state marching competition? Straight ones all but maybe three or four seasons since the UIL started holding regional marching competitions 50+ years ago, plus how many different awards from local marching festivals and competitions? Not to mention the hundreds of PN-G students who've achieved all-region and all-state honors in band and choir over the years, and a very competitive theater program. There are whole hallways at the high school lined with trophy cabinets filled to the brim for the different performing arts groups. Football is king at PN-G, but there are many, many more reasons to be proud to be an Indian.

  21. Funny you mention that, they've always been weak one time a group of my friends from church beat their starters. But that's been an accepted fact and football reigns king here. But still a true story a church league of guys under 6' won

  25. I think many of us probably appreciate your football postings (including AAW I’m guessing). Whether it’s Bellville or another team from that district, it is nice to know what’s ahead come playoff time from someone who has put eyes on those teams.

  27. Scott Rich will be a good coach for the Bulldogs. It might take a season or two for him to right the ship, but Mid-County Madness is on the verge of being a contest of state-ranked powers, on top of already being the state’s fiercest rivalry and the perennial marquis game in the Golden Triangle. This is good for both schools, and good for the area at large. I look forward to seeing what Coach Rich does at Nederland.

  34. Probably so… I mean I was a Kountze poster before moving here and posted about football and baseball there… not sports of which they weren’t the greatest.. And yes of course I posted about basketball to lol Honestly other than keeping up with Kountze basketball scores other than College hoops I honestly don’t care much for basketball as much as I used to

  35. Lol yeah you ain’t gotta worry about the sport of basketball in Bellville… For one weirdly we are region 4 in every sport but football (That will change next year as we will be region 3 across the board). Though Bellville has 6 playoff appearances since I’ve lived here (2015)… They have 0 playoff wins 😂

  36. Shoot I remember back in the mid 90s kids that couldn't make it at 5A Baytown Sterling would transfer to BH to be able to play. One ended up being all-state in 3A I think in football and baseball but couldnt crack the lineup at Sterling. My have things changed. This was during the 5A district that had Lee, North Shore, Sterling, Central, West Brook, PAJ, PNG.

  37. The UIL needs to shuffle numbers, bump 5A bottom numbers up, play local 5A and split come playoff time like 6A does. These 5A districts are getting ridiculous.

  39. School district boundaries don’t follow city limits. NISD has all of Nederland plus healthy portions of Port Neches and Port Arthur and all of Central Gardens and Beauxart Gardens. PN-GISD loses roughly a quarter of Port Neches to NISD and a fifth of Groves to PAISD, though it picks up two neighborhoods in Port Arthur. It’s more like both districts have a town and a half; the number of residents and households the two districts have is almost always roughly even. When I was in school (PN-G c/o 2011), Nederland had about a hundred more students than PN-G. The fact that PN-G is ~15% larger than Nederland now is significant. That’s the largest enrollment disparity between the two schools in at least 30 years, maybe longer. What you’re seeing is PN-GISD’s aggressive approach to replacing schools since 2008 paying dividends. Young families took notice.

  40. So you want them to play tougher teams? Because they couldn’t even beat WOS last year and got blown out by Silsbee… I’m just confused by you saying Silsbee is over rated but Nederland is 2-3 the last 5 games vs them.

  41. You have made a great suggestion in that Nederland should find coaches that "teach fundamentals and technique". You should set up a meeting with the staff and share your insight. It is likely that if Nederland coaches were to "teach fundamentals and technique", they could dethrone PNG and Lake Creek. The only issue is that it will be difficult to find coaches that would know to "teach fundamentals and technique". Also, when you were at the meetings on Thursday, which schools were available for Nederland to schedule? The 6A schools and CS?

  42. +1. I watched the YouTube video (not live) where Dave Campbell's Greg Tepper interviewed UIL Deputy Director Jamey Harrison, and Harrison stated that the UIL contacted ISDs and ADs to accommodate as many school needs and wish lists as possible. I had the exact same thought. No one called PN-G or Lufkin. And, did anyone at the UIL stop and think, something about Region 2 doesn't look right? Which one of these is not like the others? Crazy. But, it is what it is. Line up and go play. Go Indians.

  43. I’m speaking more on the travel. Especially when playoffs start. Region 2 makes no sense.

  44. Who are they going to beat to get in the playoffs? Angleton , BH , PAM , and GBALL are my picks for playoff teams. Not sure what order yet.
    1 point
  45. Well, they’ll have to actually travel, is what I mean, probably won’t get their Dallas area refs, and probably will have a smaller crowd than they get at At&T, facing a not-at-all smaller PNG crowd.
