  1. MCM is the best. There is really no argument to be made.

  2. Let's be honest.... there's Mid County Madness and then everybody else. Attendance is a big part of it. When tickets can't be had and every seat is filled..... You know the crowd is 100% pumped on both sides of the field. Relative parity is important, too. The fact that the series is relatively close and the fact that you can throw the current season records out the window at kickoff because it's anybody's game.

  4. Well, that is a bit of news to me. Then he must some have some person who answered his email accounts for him as he has typed out the answers to the annual preview questionnaires that I sent him. And, to me anyway, he has been very complimentary and thanked us for what we do for local high school sports........including just a couple of weeks before he was dismissed. There may be issues in Hardin ISD, but this site it not the root of them.

  5. I’m sorry that you feel that way, but it’s just not true. Contrary to what you believe, successful business owners want the best candidate for a position, period. The only color that they care about is green. That ol’ racist NFL would prefer to give all of those player salaries to white guys, right? So why don’t they?

    Vidor vs Silsbee

If you look at Silsbee's scores over the last 15 years, defense has not been their forte', regardless of what offense is being run. It's not been one particular offense. IMO, Silsbee struggles against very good passing teams more than they do with running teams.

I’ve only lived in Beaumont since 2001. I’ve never felt scared to live here. Thank you sir, and a big thank you to your family, for serving me. For serving us, the Beaumont community. You and your family have done a job that I could never do. I appreciate you and everything you’ve done. My family is, and will always be a backer of the police force!!!

  11. PNG & Nederland: The rivalry is coming up on 100 years old Easily brings in the most attendance for any rivalry game in the area (and can certainly challenge other rivalries in the state for attendance) Back-and-forth from year-to-year Close, intense games (almost every year) usually decided by one score Recognized as the best rivalry in the state 2x by Texas Football magazine

  12. I guess no one has listed one of the most obvious. PN-G & Big NED. That depends, I guess on what criteria “best rivalries” is determined.

  13. One thing to add, people coming back into town from all over the country to see the game.

  14. To answer your question "attendance" and "atmosphere" are not the same thing. Attendance can contribute to atmosphere. This assumes "atmosphere" is even something we can define. However, atmosphere is important. It isn't necessarily the most important thing, or even the second most important thing. But it does matter when it comes to evaluating something as subjective as a rivalry. "Atmosphere," as far as MCM goes, is extremely hard to produce, or reproduce. We've been working on MCM's atmosphere for about a century. If it wasn't hard to produce, every school in the area would have an "atmosphere" to speak of. Remember, we aren't talking about what wins games, we are simply talking about what factors matter for comparing one rivalry to another, and in the case of MCM, the atmosphere is an important factor. 8,000 to 13,000 people in attendance (and everyone knows that it would be higher with bigger stadiums), with who knows how many others tuning in on the radio, with people listening in from all over the country (and, on occasion, from all over the world -- I've listened to PNG/NED games with people emailing in from Korea, Europe, Iraq, and all over the USA, and that's just on the PNG side of the broadcast). And throw in the fact that both teams are usually among the stronger teams in the area, with absolutely rabid fan bases. Then throw in the fact that the communities are basically right next to each other and tightly intertwined. Then throw in the nearly year-round trash talk and the crazed roar of the crowd throughout every second of the game. It's a pretty good recipe for "atmosphere," and an important factor for comparing one rivalry to another. You can judge it based on the attention the game gets on this site alone. If we were talking about what wins games, the above wouldn't matter as much (though I'm certain it contributes to why other teams find it so hard to beat PNG and Nederland at home).

  22. One of the few places I hear about BLM or Black Lives Matter is in this section of this msg board. I've never seen a member of BLM. I've never seen a meeting place. Probably a good thing cause somebody would probably bomb it. Maybe if I attended the recent protests I would have seen some. Protests are too volatile for me. BLM so I stay at home. I didn't need BLM TO know that my life matters. Black people were created by the same God that created everyone and everything else. God is going to reconcile the deaths of those killed and murdered. Maybe it was homie down the street or the local police the situation will be investigated. Maybe not in this life but for sure in the judgment to come..

  23. My thoughts on atmosphere would be everything. The number of fans, the intensity on the field, the bands and drill team in the stands, the thickness in the air, etc. A true rivalry atmosphere doesn’t begin the day of the game. It’s looked at and marked the day a schedule comes out. The atmosphere begins to build then. Each week leading up do it the excitement and nerves get larger. Finally, when that game before is over everything immediately changes in those two school districts. I’ve been to several rivalry games and I’m not sure if anything compares to PNG and Nederland. I haven’t been to all of them so I’m not 100% sure. There is just something different about that game.

    1 point
  26. The most talented group to ever come out of Silsbee got done up by a bunch of slow white kids running the T in ‘16. Maybe Coach Smith has helped with defensive discipline... I just believe that Silsbee hasn’t seen much of it, and when they did they struggled. We held them fairly close in 15, too... with the starting wing out for the season. 17 was a wash for us injury wise, then we abandoned the T. Any time a slot t team hangs fifty on you, you’re struggling.

  28. Plus, I’ve already stated it earlier. He’s a small town guy and has tons of family in the area. Just sit back and see what he can do. I truly think Hardin hit a home run here, just be patient and stop trying to burn him before he’s even arrived. Regardless of How attached you were to Haynes, Barrier didn’t run him out of town. Just be happy you got a high caliber replacement.

    Systemic Racism

Systematic is a buzz word right now. Every complaint is a systematic problem. I heard Joe Biden today saying something else was systematic Systematic: Involving a system or plan. So the claims of systematic racism, most in larger cities, is a claim that the city officials are sanctioning and condoning the racism. In Baltimore,MD where there were riots after Freddie Gray’s death, was it systematic racism that caused it? The mayor, police chief, driver of the police van where Gray died, the main suspect (van driver) and the judge hearing the cases were all the same race as Gray. So was it a conspiracy by all of them to do away with Gray’s civil rights? In southeast Texas, we have Port Arthur where the entire city council, the mayor, the municipal court judge, the city manager, the city attorney and the police Chief are all of the same race. As the definition of systematic says, it is planned as part if the system. So when people are protesting locally, are they saying that the systematic racism is these leaders?

    Systemic Racism

Systemic racism - a phrase that is used every day on the news. In a condensed definition it means racism that is part of a system that is both taught, implied and repeated. By watching everything that is going on and all the angles covered by the news reporters one might think that all law enforcement suffers from this “systemic racism.” Does an entire system suffer from this, do a large majority of police officers, sheriff’s deputies, state troopers all subscribe to this? My family has a long and storied history in law enforcement. My great grandfather was killed as a Beaumont Police Officer in 1925. My dad was an officer for Beaumont PD in the 70’s during the tumultuous times after Vietnam. My uncle served on the force during the 70’s. I served for over 27 years, with the last 23 for Beaumont PD - the final 15 as a supervisor. My brother and two of my sons still serve with the Beaumont Police Department. I say all this to show that I have literally been raised in the culture of Beaumont PD. If anyone should have inside knowledge of the system aspect of systemic racism - surely I can shed some light on it. One day in the late 70’s my dad told mom that she needed to bring me to the station. I pestered the fire out of him asking what was going on and he wouldn’t budge. Mom loaded my sister and I up in the station wagon and drove us downtown. As we got out of the car at the library and walked across the street to the department I saw my dad. As a boy around ten my dad was still (and always was) my hero. There were numerous people around the front steps and tv cameras everywhere. About this time I saw one of my other heroes, and the reason dad wanted me there. As I ran toward Tony Dorsett someone yelled “Cut - who is this kid?” Tony was there in the late 70’s to film a recruiting commercial to try and attract more minorities into the department. This was over 40+ years ago and Beaumont PD was attempting to bring more diversity into the department. Systemic racism at play? When I started law enforcement in 1993, I came out of four years in the military. Every two years every officer was required to have on-going and continuing training. This is a state-wide mandate, and certain courses are required to continue working as an active officer. Every two year cycle for close to twenty years was a course in cultural sensitivity. Racism, cultural generalizations, stereotypes and a host of other racially sensitive issues were talked about and explored. Systemic racism taught at the academy? What is it that has everyone up in arms around the country? Are the police seriously racist at heart? Could it be that a nation-wide scare of plague-caliber illness, unemployment and a host of other unassociated items have been a festering keg of dynamite that was ignited by a video? Look you’ll not get me to side with the Minneapolis officer. My personal opinion is that even if he had resisted you get them up as soon as you can. If that officer lost control and it happens, a partner should have stepped in and taken control. This officer should be afforded due process. If it is proven what everyone assumes then he’ll pay the price the law mandates. There is no vast conspiracy against minorities. Let me leave you with this, I worked every day that I was on the streets in a majority minority area of town. I have experienced and been on almost every type of call imaginable. I have seen many things I’ll never be able to unsee, but I never lost my faith. I always tried to treat every call like it was my family on the other end of the phone. Have I seen bad officers with bad hearts - yes. But interestingly enough those officers didn’t seem to make it long. We are out there every day doing the best job we can. Systemic racism might exist somewhere but it doesn’t exist at BPD. This coming from a man raised in the culture and that worked his entire career for a department that is out there for you.

I respect your views and fully understand your concern. I’m concerned too. But I think that our kids are the least at risk. I think the “at risk “ population (elderly, diabetics, morbidly obese, etc) need to govern their own exposure to the point of quarantining and testing if they deem necessary. The numbers ARE going to go up as we all return to work, to social events, to church. Just like colds, flu, staph infection, STD’s and the like will increase as exposure increases. Approx 36% of all teen deaths are attributable to car accidents, but I’ve heard of no one trying to stop teens from driving. Almost no Healthy teens have died from COVID-19, but everyone seems willing to “shut ‘er down”. This viral disease has a real good PR guy that, in my opinion, has done much more harm than good. In my opinion, this is how we settle both fronts: Please wash your hands. Please stay away from the elderly and the sick. Please limit your exposure to known COVID-19 patients. Please live a normal and full life believing that God gave his only son so that you may have Eternal life. Luke 12:6-7 “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Now let’s get back to work and everything else.

You’re a silly boy... Let’s just shut everything down forever, right? My son started summer workouts yesterday morning. He’s one of the most important things in my life, and I would give my life to save his. No hesitation. You need to worry about your family and your kids and leave the parenting of my kids to me. Get your head out of the sand (and your butt) and learn the facts. Young healthy teen athletes have almost no chance of serious health issues or death from the China virus. Go spout your crap somewhere else. And leave my child out of your fear driven comments.

  40. Several years were pretty good for Jasper. But I feel 1980 was near to being as good as the 86-87 teams. Witness their little LB (5-9) playing 5 years in the NFL. Public announcers would go tounge tied saying "And Eugene Seale on the tackle." Tied Huntsville in Pre-district, and tied Hebert in district. Huntsville beat Hebert in playoffs, and went on to win state. I think Jasper clearly showed the Jasper undefeated 1980 team belonged on the same field as the eventual state champion.
