  2. Administration, pay attention: The number one thing we need to remember -- No more "Home Cooking." Now, everyone knows how sensitive I am (Grin), If anyone can show me an ex Nederland person that as a head coach has won at least two State Titles in a classification 3A and up, then we'll talk.

  3. Turf gives you a pretty consistent bounce. Most kids would much rather play on turf.

  4. No increase in injuries, all bounces are true & no weird or bad hops taken to the face. Same with softball, much better surface to play on then dirt pits.

  8. By all means, attend some school board meetings and let your opinions be known. I am not saying that sarcastically either. Same goes for the other folks. Let them know you want updated facilities and with the coaching search happening maybe it will spur a change.

  9. Good job reporting me for the BS spelled out, I shoulda used BS like you did Discussing the facilities a school has which includes baseball & softball fields that would entice a new coach to take the AD\Head Football Coach job at a school district is relevant to the topic, imo. Get off your moderator power trip before you need stress medicine

  10. carthage had 6 losing seasons in the 30 years before Surratt arrived. He came into a school with a considerable amount of consistent talent and with a consistent history of making the playoffs, and his excellent coaching got them over the hump. Coach Buchanan did a great job at Aledo, but in his first 15 years only won one state title (in his sixth year, ironically). He then went 9 more without one, before the area growth brought more talent his way. Consequently, Aledo has won 11 of the last 15 championships despite having 3 different coaches over that time. Did they luck into 3 elite coaches in a decade? I kinda doubt it. Buchanan may have started things off, but they have a major talent edge there. That said, HJ has 3 winning seasons in 20 years, and that was one special group of kids. BC has two winning seasons in the last 10 years, ironically enough with the same coach and QB as a couple of those decent HJ teams. You're still comparing apples to oranges. Surratt could absolutely come to those schools and turn them around and make them winners, but he's not taking them to state or anywhere close to it unless a whole bunch of kids move in with him.

  11. Yes I have been there and it looks great being a grass field! The Coaches are putting in a lot of work getting it ready and it looks great! My point is we can't host Tournaments due to inclement weather due to being dirt and grass! When you see Schools like PNG, Crosby, Barbers Hill, and etc our complexes are way outdated to say the least! Have you seen our hitting cages??????? If its raining our players have to hit in the gym around other sporting activities. Just my 2 Cents!

  15. According to NISD statement to the media yesterday the statewide search process was started. School board prez. played at North Texas football for Todd Dodge so there is that quality connection to help get the applications flowing.

  16. What @KF89 said it indeed the way to go on the diamond. Especially the fact it rains, here. Senior babe Ruth uses it. Nederland could host the senior BR World Series I bet, I know they already have done the southwest tournament, ford park could rent it out for their World Series, and coach Tyner I’m sure could put something together…. Kinda sad the local BR has a turf infield but not the HS atleast…

  17. Baseball and softball facilities are way over due!!!!!!! I have seen 2A and 3A have nicer facilities than what we currently have! If you look at the current 5A Schools in our district they are miles apart from our current facilities!

  18. Michigan D-line won this championship. They were great in both games.

  20. I guess coming in as a new OC in JUNE and installing a whole new offense for AUGUST leads to the OC being a below average hire. Then lose 4-5 starters. That makes sense.

  21. That coach is not coming out of retirement nor do I think he is the answer at this time… no reason to rush a hire, gotta make it right.

Great work you have done today keeping all in line & reporting people, It was just really good conversation, questions, answers & info between several members in this topic that was all positive. We all apologize to you for any other sports that were brought up along the way & anything else that doesn't meet what you deem ok to discuss. I vote you get the Karen golden tampon😎 award for the week

  27. I was very vocal in years past, I have to admit I haven’t been as of late since I guess Covid… I need to start again. And with a clean sheet so to say coming in I think it’s the perfect time. But tbh the board imo needs a little “new” or so to say “young” blood on it

  33. They love it. Every kid in setx has been playing on turf infield since a kid due to ford park facilities as well as LC, Houston and where ever else they traveled too..

  34. Turf is the way to go, plays great, safer, hardly no up keep, will get more revenue with tournament organizers wanting to use your field.

  35. Was there last weekend, Senior Babe Ruth & Coach Green do a great job with the limited resources & funds they have to work with keeping the field nice, but it is far from being a quality save field to play on compared to most 5A programs.

  37. Now it's definitely over. EDIT: 9:05PM If Michigan keeps playing with their food they will blow this game in the 4th quarter.

  38. Very very true, dat. And the coaches very well know it, including CJ. That's why certain players play. It just so happens that the team this year, and somewhat last year, was good enough to cover for them.

  39. You know they always say this. But how is that interpretation when the pay scale is already set, public, and based off years experience. Mostly. They know the pay when they apply

  40. Good luck to Barrow in retirement!!! Time for a new day at Nederland! I hope they take their time and pay what must be paid to get a quality coach.

  41. Wait, so we lost an effective coach because of over-celebration? That sounds like something that should be more of a, “Hey, don’t do that anymore,” situation. Unless there’s more to it than is public.

  42. I'll be attending the PA Memorial at Nederland game Tuesday night. Really think this will be a doozy of a game. Both teams have been playing well of late. A couple of other Tuesday night games that are interesting. West Brook and United in the Montagne Center is always a treat. Probably go to this one the 2nd time around. For the small school folks, San Augustine at Corrigan-Camden should be a good one. Two teams battling for first in their district. As for Friday, I'm thinking about going to either WO-S at Silsbee, Central Heights at Hemphill, Orangefield at Anahuac or Brookeland at Leggett. If Nederland wins Tuesday night, then their game at Barbers Hill Friday will currently be for 1st place in district. Might have to give that one some consideration. I am up to 93 teams and 78 games this season. At sometime this season I want to see San Augustine, Hemphill and Leggett. All the other teams I have listed in this post I have seen this season.

  43. Students should be in the athletic period for any team sport for sure.. including baseball/softball. I could see the argument for not letting kids in that play individual type, after school sports (golf, tennis, etc.) even though I don't necessarily agree with it. I think all athletes should be lifting/running/training for their sport outside of its season. And even sometimes during season.. depending on what the coach of that sport deems best.

  45. Truer words have not been spoken. After a vigorous recruiting cycle, all of the hype regarding stars and offers, then suddenly you’re just another receiver somewhere down in the depth chart? What better way to get a bump in attention than to hop in the portal (or decommit, if you’ve not yet made it to campus)? I read somewhere that some D1 programs were planning to use their open scholarships to up two dozen portal transfers and a half dozen incoming freshman. I completely expect to see abysmal rating numbers from tonight’s national championship game. Who wants to watch a team made of up first year guys, most of whom will be in the portal tomorrow… win or lose?

  46. I'm insulted. I've had way worse takes than this... you weren't paying attention.

  47. Coaching can be explained at WOS. Aledo is a different answer. They’ve won with 3 different coaches. They have coaching, talent, and community support. A culture of winning. Until they move up, they won’t be pushed. Once they go 6A-D2, see if they win a title within 6 years. Is the new coach at Aledo a big time coach, or is he coaching a big time program? Maybe both. Carthage always had the talent, just like Jasper has got the talent. Surratt was the perfect fit for that community. Surratt would not do the same thing at any of those schools mentioned….. or would have a extremely slim chance. There are as many elite coaches that have won a state title after 7 years, than before. Your logic is flawed and your vision is one of fantasy.
    1 point
  48. Some of those could have similar "home grown" talent from time to time. Carthage is now aided by a never-ending supply of "other town's best players" that move in on a yearly basis and continually elevate them above the others.
    1 point
  49. And @Reagan, I get where you are coming from and I agree with you plenty on the effects a great coach can have on a school. Smalley became the all time winningest coach at OF but you seem to think BC was crazy for hiring him. And your definition of “elite” is a bit nuts buddy. And I mean that in the kindest possible way. If you don’t think Kevin Foster at Big Sandy is “elite” because he doesn’t have a state title, you’ve lost your mind. I could take anyone with an above average basketball IQ to watch BS play and they would agree they are about as well coached as is possible in that sport. He’s better than the majority of college coaches I’ve seen.
    1 point
  50. Carthage also has the special talent many other schools don’t. Athletic talent. A great coaching job at HJ or Liberty would be the 3rd or 4th round. Reggie Samples, Claude Mathis, or Gary Joseph could come to Beaumont United and a great coaching job would be to get 2nd or 3rd in that district. Some people live in reality, others fantasy.
