  1. I just want to say thanks to the Dawg fans for coming to this forum and engaging with civility. Some like myself would say it even has a touch of humility coming from such a dominating program. Heres to a competitive game that gives everyone the feeling of competitiveness. Good luck Tigers!!

  2. I've been following basketball, high school basketball, Silsbee basketball for at least 55 years. I have yet to see a coach, even some considered 'a good coach' (for some that's a euphemism for deeper & uglier issues) take a team lacking in talent to anywhere significant. Good coaches and teams with lots of talent generally gravitate together, like beans and rice, BBQ & potatoe salad. It just works that way. Would to goodness basketball forums and people who post to basketball forums who actually know basketball worked that way, but that is not always the case. Enough of that. I've seen or heard of a lot of good Silsbee coaches: Dan Montgomery, Fred Williams, Travis Williams, coach Green, Sigler. They were all good coaches IMO. Coach Sigler won two state championships. Is he the best coach of them all? Maybe, maybe not. As someone posted his record speaks for itself. Also I've experienced Silsbee basketball teams being on the short end of some hard defeats and downright blowouts. They got blown out by FB Bush in the FB tournament. Madison blew them off the court in a playoff warm up game. Some big school beat em bad in the SA tournament. Wagner did it too. It BEs that way from time to time. Sometimes you have the shotgun, other times you're dodging the pellets, figuratively speaking. I drove out to Humble/Atascosita and watched HJ play Yates in a playoff game a few years ago. 'Good coaching' lasted about a half a quarter. After that I couldn't hear myself think. The Yates fans were making too much noise. Stuff like that happens in hs basketball, or any basketball. There's an often quoted bible verse that is really not a bible verse: This too shall pass.

  5. Everyone knew that Silsbee would be a little down this year, even when they get all their players in a couple of weeks. But you couple that with the fact that Silsbee is missing anywhere from 8-10 varsity players right now, this result was to be expected. I spoke with Coach Davis a month or so ago about this game and he had a good idea about this game. He told me he really wished they could have played later in the season but this was really the only time he and Joe could get a date to play. It is what it is. Personally, I think HJ has the better team even when Silsbee has all their players and would win that game as well. Just not in the fashion they did last night. Most folks with any knowledge of the game would know this. These are not excuses, just facts. And if one chooses to make the result a reflection on the coaching abilities of the two men, so be it. But last night wasn't a fair fight and it showed. I have been saying it for a few months now, better get your licks in on Silsbee this year while you can. Starting next year, things will be back to Silsbee dominance again.

  6. From Coach Clay Davis: Hardin-Jefferson Basketball tSpon3nsohreedo · The Hawks got on the winning track tonight with a 94-62 win over Silsbee. I need to give props to Coach Sigler and his staff and team. They have 9-10 varsity players still in football. There are a lot of programs that would’ve cancelled the game. Coach Sigler and his group came over and battled. I’ve been in that situation in Tatum and Jasper and we did the same thing. I have a ton of respect for guys who take what they have and go play no matter what. The Hawks are now 1-1 on the season and will host Lufkin on Saturday in a varsity only double header with our girls.. Girls at 11:30 am and boys at 1 pm.

  8. My young man transferred to DHS from Mauriceville after 8th grade (Prouse's first year). My 14yr old 5'0" 98lb freshman was not allowed to compete because the UIL ruled that they couldn't prove he didn't move for athletic reasons 🤣. He never missed a two-a-day or regular practice, Coach Prouse allowed him to practice, allowed him to dress and travel with his team. At kickoff, one of the assistant's would take his helmet (to ensure he'd never get on the field). Never missed a practice and never touched the field...all year long. I was extremely proud of him and his Coaches. Today, as a Senior, he was named 1st Team All-District WR and 1st Team All-District CB. Good things will come if you work hard enough for them. Extremely proud of my young man, his team and his Coaches. Go Pirates!

  9. I’m sorry. That Silsbee lite or whatever teams wanna call it is just so watered down and pretty lame. You win, you win. You get ran off the court, then so be it. Lots of schools basketball programs thrive without waiting for football players...

A test week for both teams. Crosby is favored. PNG's last chance to prove itself before the playoffs, and more than likely the last chance to control its playoff seeding. Bring on the iPad Bowl.

  13. Truth. I've been disappointed every time I've watched #40 (which is 7 games over the last few years), he never quite lives up to the legend built around him. Maybe he will prosper at LSU and onward. Who knows.

  15. I would like to think that coaches use whatever system fits the talent or lack of... of the kids they have. I know that a coach is considered a bad coach when they don't win but none of them are trying to lose on purpose...even the bad ones. It's very possible that the kids currently at Lumberton just don't have the personnel to spread it out and sling it around. I understand that's what all of the sideline coaches want their hometown teams to do but let's be real. Everyone wants to go no back with some run/pass option but come on.. Why risk a 70-0 loss due to 3 incompletions and a punt every possession without burning any time. Even the offensive coordinator from Austin Westlake will NOT be able to do whatever he does at WL if he came to Lumberton.

    East Chambers Area Opponent

Just watched some film on Yokum vs Columbus and Hallettsville. They lost both games but they have two running backs (4 and 7) that can run the ball. The offensive line blocks very well and has their heads under defense line push them back. The QB ran the ball very little and had good arm. Receiver's made some good catches. Overall I think this will be the best team EC has faced this year for sure. I Think EC's linebackers better have a good game # 4 had good size and fast, # 7 didn't have size but was faster and pick his holes very well. Will definitely be a good test for EC.

  24. I don't know, I just think they can do better. Assistant at Hull Daisetta, assistant somewhere in Texas City, HC in New Mexico I believe, then 2-4 in one season at Legacy. If Lumberton is forced to settle for that, they're in bad shape. No shot at Stevens, just an observation.

  36. I have watched this team for the last two years and have watched a ton of deep playoff runs from Texas programs in my life. The speed that EC has is not 3A Speed EC3 Reminds me of watching Trey Williams in Dekaney HS (Spring) back in 2010. Sometimes there is just a player that is better than anyone on the filed and it is not often that player is 5 Foot 7. Some small college is going to get a heck of a CB and not give EC3 a chance at RB. And you are a great follow on Twitter time to Fly the Jolly Roger all the way to Waller this Friday.

    BH Vs. Nederland

We aren't stagnating as much you guys are exploding. Houston is engulfing the East side of the county. What you are saying is true. Nederland is land locked with not much growth expected in the future. I really think you guys will go up a division before Nederland goes down. Having said that, I sure hope we kick the crap out of BH and Crosby!!!

  39. I don't have a dog in the fight (see what I did there?) but I will say that I came away from the Vidor/Lindale playoff game in Carthage hugely impressed with their facilities. 7 State Championships on the marquee all this side of 2008 was pretty impressive too. Definitely had the look and feel of a big time program. Good luck, Tigers!

  40. Um.. I know lol. That's what I've been saying and have said to be the reason that Lumberton will not get a big name coach. Even if they dump some money into an AD salary.. still gotta pay his assistants or they won't come either.
    1 point
  41. The teaching portion of any educator's salary is not a stipend. It is the base salary per the school district's salary schedule. An offensive coordinator makes exactly the same as a junior high science teacher for teaching (assuming they're on the same step of the salary schedule). Stipends are EXTRA duties. Coaching, UIL, etc.. Stipends will vary but yes, coordinators get higher stipends than just assistant football coaches. Head coaches get higher stipends than their assistants. Varsity basketball may be 7,000 while jv basketball may be half of that. Offensive/defensive coordinators may get 8,000 for coaching football while the other football coaches may get 5,000. These are all examples. Usually, if the head football coach is the AD, they will be on an administrator's salary. Usually negotiable. Stipends can be negotiable and extra stipends can be given to "sweeten the deal".. (power lifting, track, etc.) but the teacher salary is not negotiable. Yes, teacher pay scales will increase based on years of experience but it is not a stipend. It's just the salary.

  42. Agree with everything you said here. If the game is close at the half, you can almost guarantee a Carthage win. Unbelievable the adjustments at the half, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Luckily Carthage is one of those teams that still puts a lot of emphasis on defense and have great players and coaches on that side of the ball. Coach Preston does an excellent job and is one of the most underrated coaches in the state. Lucky to have him.

  44. Danny I’m afraid you’ve got it twisted here. You have no idea who I am or what I stand for at all. I have played football with guys you might know Jason Carter from Caldwell, Texas and Billy Pittman from Cameron, Texas. They might be a little older than you but those are some friends of mine but I’ll call them acquaintances now because as life happens we lose contact. First off don’t ever call me racist because I’m the last person on this message board who’s racist. I have family in PAISD who have played football for PAISD. My children are 3/4 Hispanic. Also my playing years were over in fall of 2000 when I broke my ankle playing college football. I did come home at 19 years old coaching The line for Pop Warner Football in Nederland, then after I got married I helped start a football league in Lake Jackson/Clute Texas(which was a blessing to see numerous young men put what we instilled in them to become college prospects as they came up through through Brazosport ISD system), and then I coached in Conroe in which I had the blessing to coach my nephew(again had the blessing to see numerous young men put what we instilled in them to become college prospects). The only reason I say what we instilled in them is because that’s what each one told me when we would go watch them play Thursday and Friday nights as they grew up after we were finished coaching for years. I DON’T SAY THIS BECAUSE I’M SOME AMAZING COACH BUT IM SAYING MY COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND WHO I AM ISN’T WHO YOU THINK. My oldest played in Orangefield when the group of freshman and sophomores now went through the program. That group went to 7 semifinal games, 4 Super Bowls but lost to a great group of WOS young men twice. When I coached it wasn’t about where my son played. Also my son played center every single year of his youth career because that’s where his team needed him. He didn’t like it but he was taught it’s not about what you want it’s about what your team needs you to be. He played his heart out every game. He was an undersized center in height and weight. Now he’s earning his Old English N in Nederland. When I coached It was about putting the best athletes in positions to be successful. We also taught them we are not just a team it’s a brotherhood that will last for years to come. I taught them you play for the person next to you because we are family and family doesn’t let each other down. So no plays off. We also taught them football techniques, gaps, holes, assignments, and could run a no huddle with them running 6-9 plays straight. That’s been my coaching philosophy and that was instilled in me in 7th grade by the great middle School Coach from Nederland Jack Lynch. I coached 1 year in Nederland on a great Pee Wee team but got beat by the better team you were coaching I believe or maybe even helping in the Super Bowl. I commend you on what you’re doing for those boys, your community, and teaching those boys the game of football you love. Which I am sure they are loving just as much. Congratulations on another Super Bowl victory. Just FYI my thoughts on a message board has nothing to do with race at all. It has everything to do with seeing kids in all organizations within STJFL having games turned into hot messes by coaches, parents, fans, and refs. I’ve umpired baseball for 18 years now and stopped being football referee when my oldest started playing. You know what ruins youth sports? UNEDUCATED PARENTS on sport rules and parents who believe little Johnny is better than he really is. Also I’m not a Nederland Senior Coach. My youngest son played Nederand Youth Football on the Senior team. He was their starting center and defensive tackle #77. He was center all but 1 year in youth football. He was undersized for those positions but I would say he held his own against bigger and stronger talent. In my opinion the success of your youth program isn’t super bowl trophies but what those boys learn from you the coaches to carry with them into school ball. Then how They grow from there. I apologize for my comment PA middle school that’s on me. Like I said I feel bad for those boys because they deserve a season. Let’s Fellowship I’m down with that myself. Last name is Delahoussaye feel free to message me. My issues have nothing to do with Racism, BLACK/WHITE, or me being a racist. If you have any questions please message me personally.

    PNG v. Crosby 2020

PNG has not stopped the run all year. If that changes this game, it will be appreciated, but highly doubtful. That said, PNG can go no huddle , spread the field short option run & passing attack all night, if Bost is sharp. Crosby can strike fast & quick, or if need be, chew up the clock. Avoiding turnovers is a must for either team to win. If PNG & Crosby both move the ball the game can stay close. I believe Crosby will take the game by 20 if no surprises. Turnovers can turnover that score quickly. Just praying for a clean injury free game going through the rest of district.

    BH Vs. Nederland

For starters, BH had better get used to playing bigger schools...rumor has it that their enrollment will cause a move up next realignment. To me, BH is the clear favorite here...Nederland has a solid team, but I, too, watch Nederland every year, and I would not consider this team to be an "above average" Nederland team...I am a big Dog fan, but the most recent 3 wins were against the bottom feeders from the district, who frankly, just weren't very good...that said, Nederland did what they should do to these teams and beat them all handily...BH will not fall into that category. For what it's worth, I think Nederland, full healthy, is a bit better than png...I know png beat Nederland this year, but our QB got injured in that game and missed about half of it and wasn't full strength when he returned...injuries like that cannot happen against BH or it will be a long night for the Dogs...BH manhandled png, so it would stand to reason that Nederland needs to play a clean, mistake free game to compete with BH, that said, I think they can pull it off: Dogs 38 BH 35

Agreed. Crosby’s offense isn’t bad by no means it just isn’t the explosive offense that the Coogs are known for. Defense has arrived for Crosby and that is going to make you a tough out in the playoffs for anyone! Crosby will win out and grab the DC!
