Seems to me if Mount Vernon could hire someone of this nature then Vidor could have also.  Well, that's if they wanted to, of course.

This is the hidden content, please

What's your take on this hire?  Seems to me that you're implying that it's the kind of hire people should seek.  Right?

This season will be telling for sure.. MV lost a D1 prospect of a QB to injury before this season ended.. and is losing probably the best RB in the state for that classification.  Both of whom were huge parts of their offensive prowess.. even the RB solo after the QB went down.  I have a friend from that area that thinks MV may struggle for the next little while.  Unless your philosophy on coaches holds true to form.. or if he brings some talent with him.  We'll see.  I never count out schools that are traditionally good or are in an area conducive to move ins.

Sarcasm understood, Mine was continuing the sarcasm. Agree with you 100%. The Slot T clearly works as do most systems when run and executed correctly.

It's hilarious to me.  The Orangefield Coach/Team was emphatically congratulated on the season they had... while running the Slot-T.  Coincidentally, the predicted front runner and spread team of the district (Anahuac).. had their season ended by eventual state champ and another Slot-T team (Franklin).

It's almost as if people don't realize the irony.

Never thought of Vidor as "having speed". I wonder if the logic is that "speed is a hinderance to the Slot T"? Or, "we are too fast to properly run the Slot T"?

I was being facetious.  Coincidentally.. I like the Slot-T.  I also like the spread.. and I like most offensive schemes when ran successfully.  None of them are designed to fail.  No coach says, "We're going to run this offense.. and hope for a few yards or even getting back to the line of scrimmage.  And if not, we'll just punt and try again next drive."  They're all designed to lead into substantial gains.. Having said that, the slot-t isn't good for playing catchup.  So when you need quick scores or to make up ground, it's not good.  But, the slot-t wins state titles every year.  Hard to say it isn't effective.  I like to think coaches do what they feel puts the team in the best situation to win games based on either their personnel or knowledge.

It is a buddy system hire but he will do better than Mathews. He was the one responsible for  Mathews most successful seasons. Mathews would never recommend  a great coach because it would give the fans something to compare his career to. Control Freak !!

I wish VISD would have explored the best possible candidates and that they would lose the mindset that Vidor can't run anything else but the Slot-T. It  only had  a 50% winning percentage there but it's a culture thing

Who from that list of applicants posted ^ would you have hired?  Just curious.  Remember... if a person didn't apply, they probably don't want the job.

So who is your pick from the list of applicants?

  5. Personally... I think that the state championship games should be at the best venue.  That's Cowboy's stadium... sorry.

Disclaimer: I perfectly understand the argument to rotate stadiums.  If my opinion mattered, though, I would suggest just rotating between Houston and DFW.  I like the idea of every classification cycle as well.  Every two year.

(that way Aledo and Carthage can have their kids win twice at NRG as well) lol

After 51 straight years of attending the boys basketball state tournament, my streak will end this season as I will not be attending this year. My goal since I started going was to attend as many as my dad did who started taking me when I was 8 years old in 1972. My dad ended up attending 50 straight, his last time going in 2007. I made 51 straight last season.

My priorities have changed over the years and my interest has waned some the last couple of years. Got grand sons to run around with now (T-ball, soccer, etc.) along with hanging out at the beach. With the wife and I retired now, just got other things I want to do. Actually I'll be hitting the new Horseshoe casino next week.

I enjoyed each and every trip to the state tourney. Great memories with my dad and got to see some great basketball. I have been truly blessed.

I may attend another state tourney (particularly if Silsbee goes) but the streak had to end sometime. Will miss hanging out with coaches, officials, media and fans that attended on a regular basis.

Good luck To Beaumont United next week. Bring home that 3rd state championship.

    That's pretty cool.

no.  at least 4 kids were hospitalized, and two ended up at Texas Children's.  Several others were unable to work out or play in their sporting events for over a week.  Several folks on here tried to make it out to be overexaggerated, or to downplay the seriousness of the situation.

I meant didn't law enforcement come in and discover that there was nothing to be charged for?  The coach didn't get arrested, did he?  I would think that if a coach did something to hospitalize some kids then there would be something.  Even if under the guise of "working out".  Right?

    I'm truly asking..

Adds up to me.  Some of these coaches aren't the brightest.  They want to punish their kids into submission.  We were overworked when I played as a punishment, but never to the point where our muscles broke down.  This exact same thing happened at HF several years ago, and there were plenty of folks jumping in to defend the coach and blame the kids for being soft, even after the HF coaches put 4 or 5 students in the hospital, and many other students had to miss sporting events that week because they were unable to walk/run properly.  Also, the way I read it is that they kept a tally of how many mistakes were made, then added it up at the end.  But either way, are you suggesting that all these students who ended up in the hospital were "faking" it?

Of course not.. I'm just suggesting that there may be more to this.  And no, I don't believe that a 15 year old kid can do 368 pushups and an athletic workout in an hour.

I remember that HF story.. didn't that turn out to be overexaggerated?

    My 2 cents:

My biggest and really only complaint to this list is the same one I have sinse the "watered down pansies" took over.  There should only be 5 on 1st team and 5 on 2nd team.  That's literally what it means.  If a "1st Team" was selected by the coaches to go play another district, there'd be 5.  This is basketball.  1st teamers are "starters" and 2nd teamers are "backups".  If it was really done like intended (like college and NBA) then the superlatives would come off of said teams.  But whatever.

Strange, but I have no problem with the Kountze kid getting MVP.  The coaches voted for it... and the kid can definitely play.  It's odd that the district champ didn't have one of the top 3 supers (mvp, off-mvp, def-mvp).  But they did get COY.  I'm just glad there aren't any Co anything.. I can't stand that.

Also, Newcomer is always weird.  You guys are putting too much into that.. it's literally a person that wasn't varsity last year.  I doubt there were very many options.

16 per mistake - they made 23 mistakes = 368 pushups on top of the conditioning that were doing during the regular workout period.

I read it.  I just mean it doesn't quite add up.. 368 pushups over the course of 60 minute athletic period along with doing an athletic workout.  You know there was a few minutes to get dressed.. and another few to get dressed to leave (or whatever).  I just mean the math isn't mathing.  I'm sure there was muscle failure from fatigue at some point which means that the pushups were either hideous in form or not done.  I read that marines typically have to do 200 perfect pushups in a DAY.  You're telling me these high school kid had to do over 350 in an hour?  Plus an athletic workout that was long enough for 23 mistakes to have been made?  Just not adding up to me.

No scouring of the state going on in Veedor ,Tejas. They would have posted the job somewhere other than the district website, which they only did because they had to. It's a buddy hire. I'd love to be wrong .

It doesn't take that for a large number of the coaching community to know what jobs are open or gonna be open.  The coaches that people might wish to take the job don't care that it's open.

It shouldn't take 7 years to do. 😁😉 (I had to say it 😂)

An elite poster will definitely read the forum rules in a 7 year window.  An elite school will hire the right coach within 7 years.  Just like an elite scholar will get a point across in 7 years or less.

    Same rules??

I won't insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said!

There’s nothing you could ever say, nor is there any handpicked selection of statistics you could ever show me that will convince me that a coach can win a state championship solely on his coaching capabilities without any talent whatsoever.  Nothing.  There are also plenty of examples where your definition of an elite coach had windows of mediocre seasons after winning said titles.  All of which is either ignored by you or answered with some kind of “exception to the rule” type nonsense.  I don’t care what you think.  Surratt isn’t winning a state championship at Sabine Pass as long as they keep their academic requirements in place.  That.. and that alone.. is the reason a coach won’t go in and draw neglected athletes from Port Arthur.  Which is their avenue to athletic excellence.

They’d rather win UIL and OAP state titles.  Know what? Cool.  Good for them.

As far as HD.  Look at what happened to the community populations and school enrollment.  The town is drying up.  Since their title, they probably need transfers for any success whatsoever.

Bold:  Yes, against who they are set to compete against.  School are set every two years against like-kind opponents.  But let me correct one thing.  Not any coach.  It takes a coach with special talent to go any where and win.  I've said in a previous post that I scrolled through pages and pages of the Texas Football History web site and and never see a school with a State Title.  Then you might see one and then nothing.  It's hard for me to believe that there is not 1 year that these schools ever had championship-type kids.  I also stated that there was a coach at a school for 42 years.  And no Titles.  Again -- no kids at least once there?!

Now we are starting to make a little sense.  Previously, I've been laughing too hard at the questions like:  Can Sabine Pass beat the KC Chiefs?  LOL!!  Anyway, first of all, we are talking about Sabine Pass and Mart in their present day condition.  This is the reason why you used these 2 examples.  But, before Mart won their first Title, what did it look like there?  How about at Aledo?  How about at Carthage?  May not be able to compare 100%.   But there was obviously something wrong because there were no Titles before Buchanan, Surratt and Lindloff arrived.  I haven't studied much of their past.  But, I have studied Stephenville when Art Briles was there.  Stephenville was pretty bad.  From 1909 to when Briles showed up, Stephenville never won more than 9 games.  And they did that only 3 times.  Brownwood was the big dog in their district.  Stephenville had not won a DC since 1952.  And they had not beaten Brownwood since 1963.  That's 25 years before Briles got there.  Briles shows up and institutes his program and in 6 years won his 1st Title.  Went on the win 3 more.  His 12 year record is 136-29.  And yes, they beat Brownwood.  Point being, up until Briles showed up, concerning beating Brownwood, and possibly other things, I'm sure people were saying the same thing there as being said about Sabine Pass.  You know, they can't do this and they can't do that.  But what happened to these different schools?  The right coach came along.

So, now back to Surratt and Sabine pass.  My answer is absolutely he could.  7 years is a long time.  That's enough time to institute his program.  In 7 years Mart might not be the same and not have an Elite coach.  But here's another caveat:  What if they meet up and both teams have Elite coaches.  Then what?

Oh, and BTW, thanks for bringing up Mart.  5 coaches have won Titles there.  And all 5 first Titles were won within my 7 year time frame!

It’s downright confusing how dumb your line of thinking is on the subject.  I’ll give you this.. you’re committed to it.
