Yeah I like your list… Could you clarify on the more well rounded aspect ? Obviously miller has the more physical advantage being 6’2 compared to sells. Not knocking what you said just wanted some clarification into what you mean lol

Good question.  Primarily defense and rebounding.  Size and athleticism certainly factor into that.  To oversimplify, if I’m picking teams in a pick up game, I’m almost always taking Miller first (unless it’s my last pick and I really need shooting).  No knock on Zac, him being in the conversation with 5 D1 players (and yes, Miller would be D1 in either sport), is high praise.

  2. In advance of the Enterprise doing its Super Gold team, who are your 5 (and 5 ONLY, this isn’t a 145 man all SETX team as selected by the coaches).  For me, there are 4 no brainers - Dotson and Payia from BU, Simmons from WB, and Harris from Silsbee.  The 5th is a struggle between 2 in my mind, and I would lean Drelon Miller, even if he is a “football guy.”  The other option would be Sells from Kountze, who I would be fine with.  I would give the nod to Miller because he’s a senior and a more well rounded player imo.

I was wondering why this was released about 2hrs before the Silsbee game? These normally don't come out until the last team is eliminated from the playoffs. This feels like someone is a little jealous IMO. Also, Joe Sigler not coach of the year and no Tiger player featured in these pictures?

7 teams>in district, 35 players honored. I guess it didn’t matter when it got released since virtually everyone got something.  20 more players honored in 19-4A than the three All NBA teams, despite having 23 less teams.  Why not have 7 co-Coaches of the Year? 😂

I know the all district selection argument has always been “it’s about recognizing the kids” which is true. Personally I think it should be recognition of the very best. A reward for hard work and performance. Selection of 20 all district players in a 7 team district waters down the award for the players who are actually deserving. Pick 5 players on 1st team and include them as the superlative players. Pick 5 on the 2nd team and you’ll actually start recognizing kids for their accomplishments again. Under no circumstance would I open the selection process to parents and slide shows and stats. You’d have lil Johnnys Little Dribbler game winning shot on the projector. JMO for what it’s worth as a fan.

The Enterprise continues to do this and that is why, in my opinion, it is the Gold standard (no pun intended). They manage to recognize 5 first team and 5 second team and they cover all classifications.  But as I know , it is what it is with these teams.  It’s nice for the kids.  But with OF, and I’m sure other top teams, all 5 starters either got a superlative or were first or second team.  If you include Honorable Mention, top 7 players got recognition.  It’s just watered down now, and is just how it’s going to be probably.

My bad I" meant in 4A..

Shaq scored that 38 in the semis vs Hearne my senior year of HS.  At that time Cole was 3A (but would be 4A now since 5A was the biggest classification then).  Interestingly, the big guy only scored 19 in the championship game, while Clarksville’s big man Tyrone Washington scored 29 on O’Neal (Washington was “only” 6’6”).  Of course, Shaq did have 26 rebounds in that game.  Clarksville played Cole to the wire that day too.

That was also BJ Tyler’s senior year and he led Lincoln to the 4A title.  Shaq was also a senior, albeit only 17.  He didn’t turn 18 until the end of his freshman season at LSU.

Canyon is 34-3 but I have looked thru there schedule and I dont think they've played a team like Silsbee or even near the quality of opponents. They did play Eastern Hills within 3pts 61-58.

I just thought looking at the schedule that an outsider looking at the SA schedule would think the two teams who will likely lose are the favorites, since FF and Silsbee have the worst records.  Just goes to show you for elite teams, playing those tough non-district schedules are crucial.  Especially for Silsbee who has a difficult time getting any kind of test in district.  Honestly think the two teams FF and Silsbee beat in the regional finals may be the third and fourth best teams in 4A.

Lamar takes down Northwestern St. on the road.

Cards are now 16-13 overall, 10-6 in conference play. They are 4th with two games remaining, at Commerce, home against Houston Baptist.

I see them finishing regular season 18-13, 12-6. Got a chance to get 3rd seed in tournament.

Most importantly, as long as they split the last two, they get the first round bye (they hold the tiebreaker over Southeastern, having beaten them twice). And if they catch Nicholls, they also  hold the tiebreaker and will give them the 3rd seed.  To be honest, I’m not sure I wouldn’t rather have the 3rd and get McNeese in the Semis because the finals will be a crazier atmosphere in LC.  And I think we match up just as well, if not better, with them as with Corpus.

And I will say in terms of the criticism herein, Lamar is winning close games (3-0 in OT games this year - in my experience coaching is huge in those), due in no small part to end of game adjustments/coaching.

  8. By the way, how many coaches in our coverage area have gone to 4 state tournaments in a row?  We praise certain coaches in this area (and not undeservingly) but some of us act like it’s just making substitutions for Green and Sigler.  Those guys are both no brainer hall of famers who deserve to be at the top of any list you want to make regarding basketball coaches in this area or the state.

This is a great game.  One thing for sure Silsbee could stand the loss of any one of its key players more than  BTW could stand losing big No. 11.  He really is something.

McDermott may be the best player in that classification honestly.  But he lost a lot of his supporting cast last season.
