  1. I don't know that a black coach would be on any shorter of a hook than a coach of any other skin color. Sure there would be some who would want to ride him out of town. But then again, there is a contingent of the greater Orange community that wants to do that to the current head coach despite the fact that in his 10 years as head coach (along with a very instrumental role in the era of his successor), he has led the Mustangs to 2 state championships, to the finals 2 more times and has advanced 4 rounds deep in the playoffs in every season of his tenure except 1. All of that plus raising the football team's winning percentage from .786 to .806 during his tenure (#1 in the state among schools that have played at least 500 games). Yes, some of those who want him gone occupy this board......deny it as they will. Some wish to call that "complacency".....not messing with a good thing. And despite the claims of some, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs' football team is a good thing. In topics here about other coaches and change, there has been a lot of talk about culture. When I see a post on here on here that the primary consideration for the next head coach, whenever that change might become necessary, should be skin color, it makes me wonder if the posts I made in those topics about the current culture at WO-S are accurate and if the current football culture in my old home town has changed.....and not for the better. If after an extensive search (something I do agree with) the best candidate to succeed Cornel Thompson, whenever that may occur, and to maintain or improve the tradition of winning at West Orange-Stark is an African-American, I will gladly welcome it as I expect other Mustang fans and alum will. In fact, whoever it is will have my full support as that person's success will greatly affect my mood on Friday nights between Labor Day and Christmas. However, if it appears that successor is put in place merely to satisfy some sense of social justice.......than yeah, I expect many will show their displeasure at the first sign of any misstep by the Mustangs. After all, the West Orange-Stark Mustang football team is exactly that, a football team. Much to dismay of plenty, some on this board, some in the superintendent's office, the Mustangs are not a social experiment.

  3. I remember someone saying at one time that WOS put their best all-around football players on defense and focused more on keeping people off the scoreboard. We have enough athletes in the program that we should be able to find 11 guys to do that AND enough to run a good offense that can score. CB made a good point about our quarterbacks, though. We haven't had many historically that are dynamic enough to overcome deficits. Jasper has to become a defense-first program from the top all the way down. It's the only way we're going to have a chance. Walkoviak knew that and we went toe-to-toe with so many teams because of that. WOS guys from that era know how good those Jasper teams were. We were nasty on defense and we need to get back to that.

    Ban TV Show Carnival Eats

They need to take this show off TV. I’m not the least bit hungry. Turn on this show, and 15 min later I’m like a Great White Shark in a feeding frenzy. Just saw a lady make a cheeseburger. Covered it all in batter & deep fried it. My tongue was slapping my forehead and drool was running down on my chin. Alas, I’m a fried food slut. 😢😜😢

  7. I was thinking the same thing ever since I found out the best defense resides in Nederland? Plus y’all have that state championship from the ‘50s and that great mid-county tradition. I’m really not seeing how Crosby has ever beaten Nederland, especially since Vidor has the same number of wins against us?

  8. I might take it pending more research. I think all y’all need to get in line and take it and let me know what you think. 😳

  9. Correct me if I am wrong, but has there only been 3 head coaches in the history of WO-S? If so, then only been 2 hires. With the asking of "why", one would think that there have been several head coaching hires at WO-S. Simple mathematics says the opportunity to hire a minority head coach really hasn't been there.

  10. Even one punt would be nice. Maybe one in the first and one in the second🤣

  11. Not to get off the immediate subject but as for WO-S future, word on the street is that they have a 7th grader that UT and Baylor are already looking at AND a 5th grader is on their radar. I saw the younger one working out at the track this summer, he had a beard.

  16. I'm sure those backups have been getting alot of playing time against top opponents all season. A big reason for the continuation of dominance. Playing 16 games a season is an extra half a season of practice per year. I remember a few years back we had a guy that broke the "most games played record" at WOS. I think it was over 60 games in a 4 year career, when most student athletes are lucky to get 20 or 30.

    West Orange Stark 2021

Mustang football is a deep tradition and a culture. The Program does not depend on transfers to succeed. It starts when they are young and continues through HS. Just this week, during the holiday's with the Mustangs out of the playoffs, I was driving down 15th st by the middle school and out in the field was about half a dozen youth, aged twelve or so, running cone drills. (No offense but when's the last time you saw that in BC)The mustangs may not make it to state anytime soon but that type of culture will make them competitive year after year.

  20. As I said last week. This game will depend on one thing, & one thing only!!! The way PNG defense is playing, anything is possible. We will have to see which PNG Indian Team shows up. Coaches, especially Defensive Coordinator, must make adjustments, otherwise the only guarantee this game is that the Indians will win!!! (One, or the Other!!!)

Crosby 98 Nederland -6 Based on 14.2, that's the only prediction I can make...not sure how Nederland scores negative points, but the mighty mecca can somehow make that happen, I'm sure reality is that Crosby is a big favorite and should win this game...just for fun, I would like to go ahead and have the boys lace 'em up and play anyway

    West Orange Stark 2021

Let me make this clear. Qualified applicants should get a fair shake. I just don’t think that’s the case in Orange or Beaumont. And not taking anything away from Coach T, Coach Peevey, or Coach Graham...

  25. I don't care who he is, or what color he comes in as long as he's capable, true to the philosophy and maintains the Steel-Linked Group of Guys Defense tradition.

  26. Or at least decide to never punt on offense. Might as well make it a no punt and onside kick every time type of team if you are never going to stop the other team from scoring.

  29. Exactly. You would think WO-S would be on the short list in this area of teams where head coaching would not be in question. You got 3 head coaches in 43 years. Worry about it when it's time to worry about it and THEN, dont worry about it. Picking the man at WO-S hasn't been a problem yet.

    My week 11 6A/5A rankings

Well, perhaps it is because I wasn't clear what I meant by "projected matchup" predictions. It probably should have been labeled "Bi-District Matchups if the Playoffs Started This Week." That is based upon the positive points tiebreaker. Currently, Lee, United and GCM are tied for 2nd in district at 4-2. I have Lee in the 2nd spot as they hold the head to head tiebreaker over both GCM and United. I have United in 3rd because as to the current state of the positive points tiebreaker, which is admittedly yet to be completed, United only sits at a -9 while GCM sits at -14. Are the projected matchups I posted an indication of what I think will happen on Thursday? No. If there is one real true pick 'em game in our area this week, BU/GCM is it. All of that being said, you did fasten on what my dilemma was for the #10 spot. It did come down to United and GCM and I had considered, in fact most of the day, yesterday, putting United in that spot. GCM's slightly better overall winning percentage is what put them over the top this week.

  35. Exactly! This is why Carthage continues to be so dominant. Obviously it helps to have great players, but when Carthage is carrying 70 kids on the varsity in the playoffs (a lot of freshman and sophomores) this is a huge advantage in getting the next group ready. And you better believe that is what Surratt is doing. He is playing the long game. Of course he wants to win this year, but always planning for the next.

  43. That is interesting. I would recruit from outside Texas, i.e. Oklahoma or Arkansas there is strong football history up there. Sometimes change is good. People from Orange are complacent when it comes to some things. Familiarity feels right for them. We need to shake things up a bit.

  45. I’m still surprised that your numbers aren’t up with all of the recent success. Also disappointed that the SIL o-line isn’t a consistent powerhouse. I thought that was Coach Smith’s bread and butter. Hooefully it was just a rebuilding issue this year.

  46. Jahmi’us Ramsey led Duncanville to the 6A state title a couple of years ago and was just drafted by Sacramento. Duncanville was the third school he attended...HIS SENIOR YEAR. The point is that the UiL, which is as broken and dysfunctional as the NCAA, ALLOWS these DECs to make those decisions. As evidenced by the Ardoin kid, the appellate process is pretty much a perfunctory joke as well. So you have one end of the spectrum where you have DFW where the “let them play” mantra rules supreme. And then the other where you have ADs or Sups or coaches voting kids down who should qualify just to improve their own school’s chances of success. I would argue that the latter is more disgusting but certainly not trying to justify the former. But then you have people hammering HISD (and Yates usually is the whipping boy) about transfers, etc. But when Dallas has been doing it FOR YEARS and the uil relies on self-governance, is Houston just to concede the championships to Dallas? Granted FFA is the most egregious I’ve seen (importing a whole coaching staff and team). Until the uil gets off its behind and fixes the system (which would take a lot more money and resources than it has), this is what we are stuck with. If it were me, I would punish the bad actors on both sides - the Faith Family’s AND Huffman’s of the world.
