I dont see either of them opting up. Those schools don't run from competition

I didn't think the opt-up crew from last time were either, I thought they claimed because of travel?

I'm reasonably well-connected out here at HF and haven't heard anything about this. But hey, you never know I guess.

I do not see them doing it either, I was just jesting at them possibly just trying to play the teams who avoided them last alignment lol

This might be an unpopular opinion but the  idea of d1 and d2 during the regular is ridiculous for travel and budget purposes. 2-3 hour drives to play some district games is insane.

There's good arguments on both sides of it...there's a lot of 6A people clammoring for splitting too...

Bottom line is more supts want the split for football than dont...until there's enough in a class that ask the UIL to change they won't...same in 6A....enough supts are happy not being split that it wont change

Mid county schools traveling to Huntsville for a district game shouldn’t have ever happened…

just like Mid County and Port Arthur Memorial a few years ago round 1 playoff games from the bottom of the state to the top of the state matchups. Hopefully UIL gets it together… no reason setx schools should be in region 2.

What’s the most common reason why they want to split?

competitive equity....if you have a district say 7-4A D1 and those teams were all in the same combined district you'd have a school with 1,200 kids in the D2 bracket because the top 3 teams are all over 1,200 playing schools with 600 kids....huge difference

Its the biggest complaint about 6A is occasionally you'll get a really large school go D2 (Katy for example) and they dominate

If it's strictly about budget and travel purposes, then just make the districts whatever 5-8 schools are closest to each other.  Regardless of enrollment.

See? That's ridiculous.  Having schools in your UIL competition district that are closest to your enrollment size, even if you have to travel a little further, is not ridiculous.  It's equitable.  There are always exceptions, but if it's true that schools are potentially better/worse depending on their pool of students to draw from... then there needs to be split divisions.  For every UIL extracurricular event.

You can't pick and choose when it's fair.. or for what sport it's fair for.  Or even when to ignore the fairness in the name of saving money.

Playing against the same size schools is either fair or it isn't.  If that's fair, then it needs to be that way for every sport.

My opinion may not be popular...but I don't believe anyone should be able to opt up. Only exception should be significant travel outliers (El Paso for example) but it should be RARE cases that are approved.

Whatever your number is...just play within that classification. If you don't like it...tough.

I agree about the opt up. It should only be for schools with major travel issues. (i.e. El Paso, etc.) Not for schools that are are only traveling 60 or less miles. BC, HJ and Liberty all opted up for competition reasons. Not travel. You'll never convince me otherwise. I can see BC opting up because they are actually very close to DI numbers anyway. HJ and Liberty are not even close.

Also, I am not all that hip on all the other sports going to divisions but if that is how it's going to be, then have divisional districts like football and not decide the divisions after district play. That actually allows a larger school to get in D2 depending on who makes playoffs.

If they do go with divisional districts this next realignment for all sports (I am hearing they won't) then schools that opt up for football should have to play all the rest of their sports in that football district. You shouldn't be able to pick and choose what sport you want to opt up in and not.

100% agree with that. If you opt up in football then you opt up in every sport. It should be that you get to pick and choose who you play.

I've always thought this.

Is anyone from 4A district on the bubble to go back up to 5A?

Only ones that have any kind of chance would be Lumberton and Vidor.

Don't expect either to go up.

I’m for keeping competition fair within reason. Maybe splitting 6a makes sense because those schools tend to be in closer proximity to each other in major metros, but I don’t know that it’s a good idea for even 5A and below to be split.

Not everyone has to make the playoffs and we certainly don’t need 12 different state champions.
