  3. After a few years into his tenure at Dayton very very seldom did Stewart get blown out ! Maybe a loss against LK Travis for the region final, pre-district he scheduled big schools like Fort Bend Elkins and Eisenhower and win most times. Several district and regional championships, State final appearance- records that any Dayton coaches since cant even begin to scratch. He used to hold defense coaching clinics where coaches all over the state would attend. He was and an outsider with no buddy or political ties to the local click his only goal was to Win!!!

  5. Players + Coaching + Competition level = Success Any 2 of the 3 can lead to a great year. Maybe not a state championship year, but good year. Just having 1 of the 3 isn't enough. It takes good players.. and it takes preparation/strategy. But that wouldn't be enough in a juggernaut district/region/classification. It happens every two years... Same relative coaching staff, a lot of the same players, but reclassification may turn zeros into heroes or vice versa. Just like I've seen good coaches have mediocre years because of lost talent or even graduation. Or injuries... And not that great of coaches can have pretty good years if they have a lot of talent or are in a weaker level of competition. It's crazy to think that there aren't a lot of variables. But I will never be convinced that all it takes is great coaching. MOST coaches are practicing stuff that is designed to be successful. And MOST coaches are taking stuff from coaches/teams that are successful.

  7. Congrats to the Rangers. The better team won. I canโ€™t figure out what home field advantage is all about. Neither team won at home. Still an Astros fan. That will never change. Will pull for the Texas team to win it all. Best state in the country.

  8. lol, you were hoping to do that, can't blame you. It would have been a mistake to count either team out, but even though I'm an Astros fan, the team with the best chance at winning the WS moved on. Astros have a rally killing dead spot in the lineup that needs to be fixed, the Rangers don't.

  9. Who teaches the players how to block, how to defend the pass, what they are supposed to do in different situations, who inspires them? Oh , thatโ€™s right theyโ€™re born with that knowledge.

  13. What a terrible night. Stros lose and I lost $20 to my daughter on 49er/Viking game. She took the Vikings but I had to give her 7 points. Looks like that won't matter. Good luck Rangers in the World Series.

  17. It's certainly a mixture. Great players can only overcome so much poor coaching, but in the same breadth, great coaching can only elevate marginal players so far. The players are the most important part, because you'll never win without them, but the coaches will play an important role.

  18. This, you have to have talent, its not strictly Xs and Os. I have seen coaches destroy talent by running the wrong system. IE had spread personnel but brought in the triple option because that's what he likes. A good coach looks at what he has, uses the best system to utilize that talent and then it comes down to how does he relate to them, how does he motivate them, how does he adjust when they study your film and take away what you want to do. A lot of the deeper rounds of playoffs comes down to who can adjust the best when your game plan gets thrown out the window.

  22. Couple of awesome post Jayhawk, agree 1000%. Just throwing it out there โ€ฆ..New Caney didnโ€™t really turn into world beaters when he was there (Iโ€™m sure some folks will scream it was a lack of talent) and they didnโ€™t offer him the HC/AD there while he was there and the existing retired.

  26. It cycles. Something will change and one or both of the Beaumont schools will get better. The sad thing is Beaumont Central used to take the locals schools behind the woodshed all the time. Even Ozen got its licks in sometimes. Itโ€™s weird that combining them made them worse. And we all know Westbrook can be better than they are. The pendulum will swing one of these days and weโ€™ll be talking about another Westbrook playoff run. But, Beaumont ISD administrators needs to get off their self-serving, myopic, arrogant butts and hire a real coaching staff, not just some guy who used to coach in Beaumont who everyone is friends with.

  28. Didnโ€™t go this year but from watching the live feed and what I heard from PNG Band parentsโ€ฆboth Drumlines and students were chanting stuff back n forth at the end and a lady who I suppose works for NISD got on the mic, said โ€œThis is supposed to be a camaraderie NOT a BATTLEโ€ and shut it down! Everyone was pretty confused cause for one itโ€™s actually called MCM Drumline BATTLE and other than a bigger crowd and students being a little more rowdyโ€ฆit was pretty much the same as last year and kids seemed to just be having fun โ€ฆidk! I thought it looked pretty tame compared to the stuff we did back in the dayโ€ฆ.lol!

  34. Pretty simple Rangers have a good hitting club and your pitchers canโ€™t get ahead in the count, your going to get clobbered what a lousy series of hitting by McCormick, Maldonado, Peรฑa, and Tucker at least 1 team from Texas in WS. Hopefully they will win it

The Astros winning the 2022 title with Dusty as the manager might be one of the most impressive feats a team has ever accomplished. Thereโ€™s a reason 4 teams have told this guy to kick rocks. Bochy has managed circles around him.

    ALCS- Lone Star Series

The PBS documentary "The Astros Edge" that came out a few weeks ago does a pretty good job of disproving allegations that the sign-stealing system was used in the playoffs. Its also pretty well-known that Altuve didn't participate in the scandal. No excuse for the cheating they actually did though.

  42. Great coaching recognizes the talent their players may or may not have then adjust their system around those players to put them in the best position to win. One example is BISD having lots of talent but without a proper coach the y can't produce wins. Another is Crosby being consistent winners until their coaches left and they hit rock bottom. One Crosby coach goes to Chapel Hill and makes them winners instantly. There is too many examples of this to list

  43. I think it's a lot closer to 50-50 than most people from schools with a lot of talent believe. Quite often those athletes are a product of a preparation in a system that goes back 6 or more years. When you start naming great athletes that came from your program, ask yourself "how successful would they have been if they'd played for a crappy program?" I use WOS as an example. The Mustang faithful always go back to it being the athletes, not coaching that made them great. All they need to do is hire one of CT's old assistants and there WILL be a return to glory, right? How many WOS kids are in the NFL right now? How many are playing D1 ball? Being a part of that program helped to make good athletes have great high school careers. But it's a mixture... the best coaching in the world won't help a bunch of unathletic kids get to the State Championship.... but top notch coaching can help a bunch of good players have a GREAT season/career.

    WO-S vs BYE

Remember decades ago when area fans would make jokes about Vidor playing Interstate 10? VHS - 0 Interstate - 10 Who would have ever imagined that area fans (and WO-S fans) would be making light of the fact that WO-S has a bye week? I will say this, the bye week is undefeated. I can't remember the last time the bye week lost to any opponent? Bye week always holds teams scoreless. I don't think the bye week feared Dan Hooks or Cornell Thompson so you know bye week will be ready for Coach Hickman. Somewhere...Vidor fans and I-10 are smiling.
