WhoDat Posted July 21 Report Posted July 21 Glad you brought this up. What is everyone's thoughts? I heard several coaches really upset about these new "mandatory" UIL guidelines in regards to the Wet Bulb. According to the guidelines there's a very good possibility that athletes will not be able to wear any protective gear in practice or even practice at all outside after about 12 with this Texas heat. I know there are schools in with indoor practice facilities, but most schools especially smaller classifications don't. Many, I heard have adjusted to early morning practices to help, but athletes don't play games at 6am in the morning. The biggest issue is students may not be able to practice one day, but can participate in a full game the next day. So ultimately who's response for the safety of the school when coaches are not allowed to acclimate them in the afternoons? Makes no sense that a kid cant practice outside, play can have a competition when the temperature could even be hotter. CavemanFootballJunkie 1 Quote

Started dropping to 88.7 around 4:30. Quote

The same people who gave every kid a trophy are the same people who don't think the kids can exercise outside. Just let them stay inside and play Sega football against each other. BBtater984 1 Quote
Tigers94 Posted July 22 Report Posted July 22 Rest when you need to and plenty of water would be a better option. Problem is, some kids don't want to look "weak" by needing to sit down and cool off for a few minutes. Coaches would have to mandate things to an extent. Quote

I think what Pine is trying to say is that kids need more outside exposure before practice starts, and he is right! Kids need to get out from in front of the TV, computer, gaming console, etc. Being acclimated to the heat before practice starts would help every kid. Reagan 1 Quote

1970 Posted 18 hours ago Report Posted 18 hours ago I agree with whoever said it in the article, it's ok to play the game in the heat, but not practice in it, apparently. That's going to get somebody hurt, IMO. Trying to regulate common sense. And it's unfair to the teams all along the coast, I think. But I need to re-read the article. Teams in 95% humidity on the coast will have a higher wet bulb temp, while teams with 50% humidity will have a lower WB temp. This can get confusing. Team scouts all over Texas will have their note pads, binoculars, and thermometers. Quote
BBfan061 Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago I’m sure the upcoming football season will work out fine despite these new rules and people yelling at clouds shaking their fist… Mr. Buddy Garrity and BEARCPA 2 Quote
WOSdrummer99 Posted 5 hours ago Report Posted 5 hours ago 10am and we're in the red... "2-hour max practice time. Players are restricted to helmet, shoulder pads, and shorts" Coaches around the state are monitoring their current conditions and will adjust as always. No real threat of missing practice in November December because of this. Hopefully they'll be smart and get the work in early. Mr. Buddy Garrity, BBfan061 and AggiesAreWe 3 Quote

Maximum practice time is 1 hour, and no protective equipment can be worn. No conditioning either, but be ready to compete in a game the next day even if it's hotter. Reagan 1 Quote
Matthew328 Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago We cant compare games to practice...games are much easier and less strenuous than practice....I was told by an AT that 95% of heat related issues take place during practice. Games have built in breaks much moreso than practice If we are talking about varsity football games start in the evening....WGBT won't be an issue at 7pm if its an issue for freshman/JV games then push start time back a bit or play Sat AM the hand wringing is typical anytime something new happens...coaches will adapt and adjust just fine Mr. Buddy Garrity 1 Quote
