Thanks.  I expected more from the Beaumont crowd.  Maybe Nederland too, but they're preoccupied with bashing their own football program right now.  And speaking of Bulldogs, I heard BJ Tyler is going to be the next coach at Kelly.  Anyone else hear that?

Speaking of kelly

where does Edward persia fall?

Pretty high.  He was one of my wife’s students when she taught at Kelly, so I kept following him at Princeton.  Obviously that list begins and ends with J’Covan but is Persia #2?  I can’t think of anyone I would put in front of him.  Little Langston has a shot.

So who gets to claim j covan pa or Kelly

kinda like troop. Lcm or hj.

Me and Persia had our battle s from jh thru high school. I loved competing against him.

I would say both.  If have to pick, where they graduated.  But Throop is easily the best I’ve seen at LCM. He’s top 10 at HJ.

J'Covan, Persia, Mullens.

Little Langston was probably the third best freshman in the area last year behind Garrett at WB and Nederland pg, but he doesn't go to Kelly anymore.  PNG kid.  Their best ever is Joel Lafleur.

Nederland has only one person to even be considered. It’s Colton, a wide gap, and then 3 or 4 more players to be considered. That’s no disrespect to the other guys, but Colton was in a league of his own.

Pretty much this sums up for best player For Nederland… would be fun to debate and talk about everyone’s opinion on 2nd and 3rd best from Nederland…

Respectfully disagree.  Hefner chose A&M over offers from Houston and Oklahoma.  Weisbrod went to New Orleans/Lamar.  I'll take Hefner over Weisbrod.

Jamie Weaver went to Houston and was on the Phi Slamma Jamma teams.  I'll take him over Hefner.

Buddy Davis won an Olympic gold medal and two NBA titles in the 50's.  He's your winner for Nederland.  Don't tell Colton's dad I said that, though!

So where you choose to go to college dictates who's the better HS player? Hmmm ok.

You're missing the point.  Where you are offered to go to college indicates who the better players are.  Weisbrod would have surely chosen to go to a school like A&M instead of Lamar had that been on the table.

I would say a player’s offer list is pretty telling of a players ability regardless of sport. Sure there are misses, but not all that often.

Alot of folks missed on Weisbrod.

--------------------------------------------------------------

And no @72 Pinto I'm not missing your point, but eye test in my opinion and alot of folks opinion on and off here Weisbrod was the better HS player.

I've said numerous times Hef would be the better college player but he was not better than Weisbrod on the HS level.

Also: they played different positions.

🤷🏾‍♂️

That's a fair point and maybe he was a better player while Hefner was a better prospect.  The title of the thread is best player ever at a school and I think you have to go with the guy with NBA rings (Davis) over a 6'4 post who kind of sniffed some semi pro workouts.

When I see the title of the thread I think of best HS player. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Weisbrod was the mvp of the State his senior year.  He was an undersized 4 at the next level so that dictated his offers.  A 6-4 SG is more marketable at the collegiate level than a 6-5 (at best) PF.  However, if it’s the best HS player, it’s gotta be Weisbrod.  And I love me some Hef.  As for the other guys, way before my time so can’t speak to them.

Colton is also on the very short list of best players in SETX in the last decade.

I guess I was not very specific on the parameters of the topic.  Oh well.  It's a crappy thread if there isn't any arguing or debating!

Even if you want to go with Hefner as the collegiate player he has had a hard time finding a role on the team. Weisbrod was a very very good player once he moved back home. Dominated the juco level and then came in and was one of the top 5 players in the confrence for two years.

Jamie Weaver averaged 3 points a game at Houston and then had to transfer to Hawaii where he didn’t even end up finishing out playing basketball.

If you want to go with the guy who played HS ball in the 40s and 50s go ahead I guess.

Point is, those other two have been to better programs, and Hefner was 100% the better prospect, but no one who has played at Nederland has been better than Colton.

Maybe where you're from, winning a gold medal and NBA titles is common enough to disregard?  Maybe Hefner and Jamie Weaver would have dominated juco and southland basketball.  We'll never know, but we do know that Weisbrod couldn't play at A&M or Houston because they didn't offer him a scholarship.

Everyone has their own opinions and that's what makes this fun.  Hell, I once saw someone rank themselves top 10 all time at a school they didn't even go to.  You never no what other people think and there's really no wrong answers.

So are you ranking them on offers and what they did after high school or what they did in school? You’re moving the goalposts every post 😂

    • If there's a specific situation that started this thread, I don't know the details.  Nor do I care.  But I do have an opinion about what I'm gathering from some of the comments. My opinion: I do believe that an AD should leave the players of a particular sport to their respective head coach during that season.  The varsity players of that sport anyway.  I believe it's a little different concerning the sub varsity players of that sport.  If an AD/HFC decides to grab some JV baseball players for some offseason football stuff during the athletics period, I don't have AS MUCH of a problem with it.  I would still consider it a common courtesy to discuss with the head coach of that particular sport to consider their thoughts on it. I also believe that ALL athletes should be lifting and running all year.  When in a particular season, I believe that the head coach of that sport should control the reigns on that topic to implement some sport specific lifting/running during their season.  But all athletes should be in the weight room year round. As far as playing multiple sports?  I'm an advocate.  I know that the popular idea is for potentially good/great players in a specific sport to "focus" on that sport.  And I agree.. but focusing on one sport doesn't mean stopping the others.  It just means prioritizing time in a way that extra work is put into that specific sport.  After hours, weekends, holidays/summer, etc..  Just because you plan on making a push into college baseball (for example) doesn't mean you can't work on baseball during other sports seasons.  That's exactly what I did.. and countless others.  Plus, it's important to maybe learn how to be a role player in a sport that you're not the best at.  Because that's coming. That's my opinion.  And I come from an era where kids played multiple sports if they knew it would be helping.  Helping their classmates.. or just contributing to school pride.  I hate knowing that there are schools that could be much more competitive if their kids would just come out.  It's hard for me to understand if I'm being honest.
    • I wasn't arguing the point of how an AD keeps his job. The question was "what has happened to Jasper" as in their whole athletic department. They were much much better in those other sports even when football was successful. Not anymore. Something definitely has changed.
    • I just don't think it's as big an issue as what's being discussed. My opinion.
    • It's common knowledge that this sort of thing happens on ranches, out in the country, etc.  I'd be willing to bet that a good number of people who participate in this forum have had to do something similar. That said, she's an absolute moron for putting it in a book, period.  The act of killing the dog can be justified, especially for those of us familiar with how life on a ranch/farm works,  but publicizing it is inexcusable for someone in her position.  I honestly have no clue what she was thinking.  60% percent of the country already doesn't like trump, and now his most likely running mate has a major controversy over killing a dog.  Pure stupidity.
    • There are times when certain things are appropriate, and when they are not.  We can agree to disagree on the appropriateness of star baseball players doing contact football drills in the days leading up the baseball playoffs.
