Government Run Grocery Store
thetragichippy and 3 others reacted to bullets13 for a topic
I worked in inner city Beaumont for 15 years, exclusively with families below the poverty line. Lots of them do things right, but lots of them abuse the system. To pretend the abuse isn’t rampant is silly. As someone who devoted what will end up being around half of my professional career to helping and working with the impoverished, I have no issue with more restrictions on what government handouts are used for. Nobody should starve, but other people’s tax money shouldn’t be spent on luxuries.4 points -
You really should quit while you’re behind. This ISN’T civil disobedience. It’s dereliction of duty. It’s a civil offense according to the Texas Constitution, and CAN result in expulsion. The link you posted is great. But, it points out minimum requirements on timing & procedures for implementation. Nothing is written anywhere in the Texas Constitution about not having redistricting on a shorter time basis. Redistricting MUST be done every 10 years after the national census. It could be done every other year. Nothing prevents it. There will be lawsuits either way. It DOES NOT take a Constitutional Amendment. Not sure where you’re pulling all this stuff from, but it must be dark in there. In Texas’ history, only one Party has ever used the quorum break option, even though—historically—they’ve been the majority in Texas. Democrats have used this ‘nuclear option’ four times. 1870, 1979, 2003, and 2021. Now, we have five times. Republicans have NEVER used this option, even though they have actually been the minority Party in Texas for the majority of its history. You say Republicans in Texas are acting like ‘occupiers.’ Interesting. I say they were voted in to represent their constituents, and are the clear majority in Texas. I may not like this redistricting idea at this time. I think it opens a can of worms that don’t need to be opened. But, it’s legal. I could even argue—with the recent population growth—it may be appropriate to relook at the timing of redistricting in general. But, I think it should be something done in regular session & not rushed through at the whims of DC. So far, you’ve been posting a lot about this with very little real, accurate info to back up your posts.3 points

Nothing wrong with what he said, you simply live in the pathetic world of reading “woe is me” into every thing that is said, especially if it comes from someone that won’t openly declare hatred for Trump. We could use more Hippys in the world and less victims like you.3 points -

There's definitely space issues when you get below 4A because we've tried to keep the magazine at 400 pages. With more and more schools playing football, that dance gets tougher each year Depending on the team we may have a longer write-up on the team page on the website...which team/district are you referring to?? I've passed your feedback on to the editors, etc.3 points -

Redistricting should ALWAYS be about the numbers and not political gain or loss. When the population landscapes change, that is time to redistrict. That's warranted. Any other reason for redistricting is simply to gain a political advantage. Neither side should do it. I will say, the Dems that have fled to break quorum should be replaced. Immediately!3 points -

I get that. But if Reps (both sides) were to do this all the time without any immediate repercussions, then how can legislature work fluidly? I can certainly understand voting someone out because they no longer rep your beliefs and values. But I don't need to vote someone out if they don't show up for work. That should be handled accordingly and immediately. Just my opinion. Would feel this way if the sides were reversed.2 points -

I wouldn't mind government ran stores for people needing food assistance. These grocery stores would have basics and not ribeye's or lobster. These folks could be issues a card that only works in the government run grocery stores. This would limit what they could purchase.....Plus beans, rice and ground meat don't have a huge resale value...2 points -

La Porte vs Deer Park: 65th Border Battle - 8/29, 7:00 p.m., Bulldog Stadium
Big Daddy Cool reacted to OlDawg for a topic
A little early, but ready for the new season in the new digs. This meeting marks the 65th Border Battle between these two heated rivals. The rivalry began in 1946, and is one of the oldest town vs. town, big school rivalries in the state.. It was honored as one of the Great American Rivalry Series Games in the nation in 2015. La Porte leads the all-time series 32-31-1. Deer Park has won the last 4 contests. This will be the first time the game has been played at La Porte since 2022. Not a more fitting game to initiate the new Bulldog Stadium than this long time rivalry. The capacity of the stadium will be tested right off the bat. La Porte finished last season 10-4 in 11-5A D1 with a second consecutive District Championship under Coach Berneathy and staff, and eventually lost to district mate Angleton in the R3 Finals 24-21. They return a solid core of players with an eye on a bigger prize in 2025. Gone is the three-headed monster of Barnes, Sandolph & Simon. So, it will be interesting to see how the offense is adapted with Simon as the feature back. La Porte returns 7 on offense, and 7 on defense. La Porte is ranked 6th in the State in 5AD1 by DCTF. Deer Park finished last season 8-3 and 6-1 in 24-6A and lost to North Shore in Bidistrict. They will have new--but talented--skill position players. They return solid, experienced, big (as always) lines on both sides of the ball. The Deer return 4 on offense, and 5 on defense. DCTF is predicting a 3rd place finish for the Deer behind Dickinson & Clear Springs, and another playoff appearance in 6AD1. This rivalry game always has some unexpected twists and turns. It's like NASCAR having Daytona right out of the gates to start the season. Emotions are always high for both teams. But, this year may have added incentive as La Porte will want to record a tone setting inaugural victory even more at the new Bulldog. Deer Park will want to ruin the opening with a win of their own. Deer Park won the last meeting in 2024 at Abshier 25-22. The game should be broadcast on the free LPSportsnet YouTube channel for those not lucky enough to get seats.1 point -

They are making this game a bullpen game in order to give some of the starters extra rest. Probably see Houston use 5-6 pitchers in this game. Gives Brown 6 days and will make the start in the opener at Yankees. Will also allow Arrenghetti to pitch the second game on Saturday and Framber on Sunday. I personally like this move.1 point -

Actually I do.........I even refreshed myself and read this [Hidden Content] So, it is the refusal to obey the demands or commands of a government or occupying power, without resorting to violence or active measures of opposition; its usual purpose is to force concessions from the government or occupying power. So in this case, you think it is ok for the Government to oppose the Government because one side can't get their way? Are you going to support Trump when he stays in office a 3rd term and exercises his civil disobedience? The "Government" needs to play within the rules or resign.....1 point -

Does not matter what it as. Abbott is not breaking any rules. Democrats ARE breaking rules and not doing their jobs.1 point -
You don’t think the decision to do redistricting first was political? Abbott could have taken care of Texans first, then Trump. But no. Abbott knew the quorum bust would happen, so do redistricting first and blame Dems for ignoring Texans when they break the quorum. Texans should have been put first.1 point

We just play by the rules the Dems have laid out. I always say -- just tell me what the rules are. Then when I beat you at the game then you can't say anything because I'm playing by the rules you set up. In this case it's setting districts that helps the GOP. Just like the Dems have done in the past. Just like the Dems do in California, Illinois, New York, etc, etc!1 point -

This is what I think: The further we get from Athenian democracy, the closer we get to Macedonian rule (look them up). The more that public participation in the process can be restricted, the less that public’s bearing on political outcomes will be. I’m not just talking about voting either. I mean civics, history, sociology. These are being either minimalized or perverted in our education system. Party don’t matter. Active, informed participation does.1 point -

It’s called courage. The cowards are the ones in charge. Scared of Trump. Special session was supposed to be cannabis reform. Then the floods happened. They were gonna look into that as well. Then Trump said jump and our local issues go to the back burner. That,my friend, is the height of cowardice. Putting an individual’s demand above constituent needs. Shameful.1 point

Happens even at a more local level. In 2021, Democrats (with Lina Hidalgo) redrew the county maps where Republicans lost a Harris County Commissioner's seat. That gerrymandering gave Dems a 4-1 majority, and allowed all the tax increases and other ultra progressive policies to be implemented. Now, after already finding a state loophole to be able to raise property taxes by 15%, Hidalgo wants more for free child care for all.1 point
