  1. To say Kountze struggles with consistency is a massive understatement. But it’s pretty expected from a team that returned 1 Varsity starter, 0 Seniors, and a swarm of Sophomores. The two Juniors play some big time minutes though. With the 8th grader coming, Kountze can be a real problem in the next 2-3 years. If they could get the older brother back they would be that much better. Either way, the next couple years should be a fun ride.

  2. Also, let's not forget that Silsbee JV has an excellent coach in Coach Ira Brooks. Man has been so loyal to Silsbee through it all. Could easily have been a head coach elsewhere.

  3. Big time win for your Lions. Basketball is better around here when Kountze is good.

  4. I’ve seen Kountze play several times this year and Zach Sells is the real deal. I think Kountze’s inconsistency is more about their shot selection than their age. When the 3’s are falling anyone is in trouble but that’s a dangerous formula for long term success. The one thing that will improve with age is their defense, they will get bigger and stronger which will make them better. Congratulations on a big win Lions!

Question had nothing to do with Neuman, Tom Landry or Lombardi. '74-'77 Ethridge had elite head coaching record in Texas at PNG, After '77 Ethridge had average coaching record. What changed was the question? Elite head coaching in high school doesn't really need many quality players & can win state championships at any school according to you? Biggest factor was level of talent & skilled players declined those years for Ethridge. As elite as his coaching may have been, it did not matter without a good amount of talented players.

" Etheridge Records after 1977 '78- 6-4 '79- 4-5-1 '80- 7-3 '81- 3-7 '82- 4-6 '83- 6-3-1 '84- 2-8 @Round Rock" You still didn't explain that ^. I need your explanation to why he (AN ELITE COACH) managed a 7 year stretch that you would've fired him for... after winning his 2nd state title. 4 of those 7 years were below .500. Explain that. It's not about taking hall of fame status away.. just admitting that he didn't have the players. Proving that even a great coach can't do it without good players. Like I've said countless times, Bill Belichick is an average to below average coach without Tom Brady. 79-87 without him, to be exact.

  7. It helps that there are two players who are having to play JV ball (transfer stuff) that would definitely be playing varsity right now and getting plenty of playing time. But, it also helps that the varsity is loaded and Coach Sigler is able to keep some of those guys playing JV in order to give them more PT

  8. When shots are falling Kountze can beat anyone. When they aren’t, they will struggle (a la OF). I’ve thought EC was the second best team in the district all year but they got a comfortable win in Winnie. We will see how it goes Friday. But there isn’t a great margin between any of the top 5 teams in that district (adding Anahuac and Buna). Any can beat the other (even comfortably) on any given night.

  9. From Cardinal Backer...... My solution? A set period of benefits like we have now… 24 months or so. Once it’s done, it’s only good for products like WIC provides, the old cheese and butter like they used to pass out, and MREs like we feed our troops. My guess is that you’d have a lot fewer people on the system. Heck, prove the liberals wrong. Only give them healthy alternatives. Fresh fruit and vegetables, no processed foods, no soft drinks. My guess is that our spending in that area would shrink when they couldn’t shop like fourth graders turned loose at the grocery store with unlimited resources. Isn't this how it was when I was younger? You could only get so many months of unemployment and other handouts? When I was a younger man there was a stigma that came with being unemployed. Now it is a badge of courage. I had a friend out of work that called asking for a job. I hooked him up with a job paying $35/hr. Much less than we had made in the past but a good paying job non the less. He took the job but told me......... "This job is beneath me and I need more money." My response was, no job is beneath you when you don't have a job.

  10. I don’t complain much anymore. But the officiating tonight was completely ridiculous. It was literally 5 vs. 8 in the first half. Samaha played a total of 4 minutes through 3 quarters. One minute for every foul he had. Sheldon had 3 in first half as well. I’ll give Huffman credit as they had a great game plan in first half and executed it to perfection. Coach Davis made some halftime adjustments. And were able to hit some big shots from Sheldon and Melvo in the second half.

  12. No Brisbane, Baltrip, or Cartwright tonight. We really need to stop playing with teams. No more taking the starters out halfway through the 1st quarter please. Might cost us dearly against a better opponent. What happened to the size Lumberton used to have? Mitchell screaming at the top of his lungs for rebounds. Bro, half your team looks like they're about 5'6. Chill out.

Forgive Reagan...he isn't too good at math and doesn't realize that you would run out of coaches...maybe then, some of the "coaches" in the stands could take over and we could see how that goes?? And huge agreement with Smashmouth when he added parent and community support to my previous post...those are critical as well.

  23. Maybe you should pay attention - been in banking and finance since 2006, and came from managing big box retail stores. But go ahead and play superior if it makes you feel better behind that keyboard.

What about schools that don't play football? Also, lot's of schools put just as much importance in basketball and baseball as they do football. So your "theory" doesn't apply.

  29. He was and deservedly so. IF he’s not the best player in the district now, he definitely should be the next two years. But he’s putting up all state number as a sophomore. There are some really fun kids to watch in this district. Sells is probably the most exciting of the bunch.

  31. Where do these stats come from? Buna lost 2 players and 1 was DH’d for all year. They beat Shiro the past 2 years and took CH 3 games with a depleted/injured pitching staff. Just an outsider looking in! Not where you start, but where you finish.

  32. Wow. That's a big win for Kountze. Any chance the Lions surrounding Sells with good talent? I know a school about 10 minutes down Highway 327 he can come play at if not.

  40. I was on my way to the lake a few years back and stopped in Newton at Brookshires. There was a clean cut lady in line in front of me at the registers and she was wearing a Newton ISD shirt. Possibly a teacher , probably a para… I don’t know. We made small talk and she seemed sharp. She pulled out her Lonestar Card and paid for her groceries, then paid cash for her non-grocery items. I could make a ton of judgments, but it made me wonder. How many people have NEVER paid for their own groceries? I can’t claim superiority because I have signed up for benefits in the past. There was an emergency 90 days’ worth, if my memory is correct. I found work and never renewer after that initial period. But I do remember that the actual money lasted a lot longer than 90 days, lol. Its like this… I know a young couple with kids and they are always struggling… but I’ve heard Grandpaw say “I don’t care how bad it gets over there… my grandkids aren’t going to sit in the dark over there and they’re not going to go hungry.” It’s a nice gesture, but all Mom and Dad hear is that they don’t have to worry about the light bill or food… gramps has it covered… or at least that’s how they act. They just need somebody else to help them get their car back from the repo yard. And I think that’s where a lot of our “poor” are today. They know that if they start improving their lot in life by getting a job, they won’t be able to afford the groceries that they have on our dime. Those generous benefits are a disincentive to getting off of them. I'm curious if you don't win in your seven years and get fired, does that make you ineligible to get hired somewhere else? It kinda seems like you're outkicking the coverage on this one. For every coach who ever wins a state championship there are dozens who never will. Not sure how you can keep firing really good coaches in the hopes of finding an elite coach when by Reagan's standards, there are less than 10-15 "elite" coaches at any given time roaming the sidelines of Texas football stadiums, while there are over 1500 high school football teams in the state.

Rez Ipsa -- good post! This is 100% true. Before Surratt, Carthage had "never" won a State Title. Surratt won a State Title in his second year! People that get confused when we state that he could do it at Vidor and BC, they don't have much faith in his coaching ability. Even after all he accomplished. Look, I know Vidor and BC has been down for a long time. These people that get confused are thinking that all coaches are the same. So they tend to blame the kids! Think not? Then why would anybody think, then, that Surratt couldn't be just as successful at Vidor and BC as he is at Carthage?!

  45. YES SIR, YES SIR YES SIR! so very 💯 with that statement. That's how it should be. Coaches having those connections in order to help the players get the opportunities that come with it. Not just for current players but future ones as well.
