Central/Ozen UIL situation

Ok... I hate to be the voice of reason, but.... how many OTHER buildings in Southeast Texas were a total loss as a result of Hurricane Harvey that received no floodwater?

Add to that the fact that the “total devastation” want even recognized until after kids had returned to school.

BISD is using Hurricane Harvey as a cover for convincing the feds/insurance to further an agenda. I obviously have no clue what the big wigs in Beaumont have planned, and based on the theories being floated here, most of you don’t either.

If I had to guess, based on history I’d bet that there is already a plan for a combo of Ozen and Central to create a new campus that would outshine West Brook in all areas.

Or, a decision to send kids back into Central with little to no renovation if it turns out resources are not given to BISD by the feds.

Either way, we already know that Walker Electric has the electrical work on lockdown.

I also think they should build the new school out there by the Butch and use his name on it as well, just to avoid any confusion.

Would there be enough room to grow the campus at Smith long term?  Probably need double the classrooms and build facilities for Athletics and other extra curricular activities.

Supposedly the district would be able to use the 18 million from their insurance policy to bring it up to par.

"They" will not allow West Brook to be outshined...

Going back into the Central main campus is not an option...

Glad you reside in Bridge City and that your opinion doesn't matter.

More important than the name, who takes over as head football coach at this new school? Or head basketball coach? That’s gonna be the hard decisions where one person will lose their job or have to take a lower paying position due to these unforeseen circumstances.

Sounds a lot like a modern remake of “Remember the Titans.”

Also, how about the kids? At their respective schools, they are starters. Combining the schools will create lots of bench players. There will be an exodus for sure.

Also, Cardinalbacker hit it on the head. Central is in the same condition as the old South Park high school, which was in that condition due to lack of maintenence.

Understandable

However, TJ/Lincoln/SFA has kids starting at all 3 schools and Forest Brook/Smiley had starters at their respective schools. This would be difficult for the kiddos, no doubt about it. Could be a powerful teaching tool for the students about responding positively to change and thriving in the face of adversity. All in all, I hope the community gets what they want out of the deal.

Yes sir, and guess where those PA players went. Let's face it, parents aren't as concerned for their kid's educational future as they are about whether or not their kid can shine in a sports arena.

No disagreement there

Some kids would definitely move on, can’t argue that

Wrong.  The old South Park was in bad shape because it was in horrible condition probably about 20 years prior to its demolition and was a rodent, insect, and mild infested eyesore.

That's not due to a lack of maintenance? Since you are an expert on decay, how long has Central been in this condition.

I have my opinions on who should get what but they are just my opinions.  I explained on a Facebook post last week that a merger just doesn't affect students, it affects staff at every position from the Principal's on down...

I've had several close relatives that's walked through those halls, the Middle School, that is.  I would know.  The people still holding on to the high school days and made a big stink about its demolition didn't even have kids or relatives there and just wanted the old eyesore to remain, only because of nostalgia purposes...

Central has been in poor condition for at least 20 years.  I assume that Harvey only made things worse as Harvey couldn't have made things better...

Keep wishing on the exodus part.  Football for example, I don't know how many Seniors Ozen will graduate this year off of their football team but Central had 31.  So at Central, there would have been a lot of competition in Spring ball for a lot of positions anyway.  My boys start back working next week for next year, so the competing part won't scare them.  A lot of those kids between the 2 schools know each other already.  Plus, I think Ozen played a lot of guys both ways, it will ease that.  Central only had one guy playing both sides a lot.

An a exodus to where?  West Brook?  I doubt that with their already deep numbers and you don't go join the enemy.  Maybe you were referring to an exodus to Nederland but you already have PA for that...

Wishing? Just a fact of life. Yes, they will move their players to other towns. I also forgot that Beaumont students can attend the achool of their choice so there has already been some jockeying for positions. I couldn't care less where they go. I don't live in Nederland. I pay Beaumont taxes.

Central is probably the oldest high school in Beaumont. 20 years to get mold? That is laughable. Why not demolish? No nostalgia here. Central way uglier than South Park.

Is there a language barrier here?  I've NEVER said Central had mold prior to Harvey.  Grabbing info from thin air again.

I said Central was in poor conditions for the last 20 years.

...and Central didn't have water leak issues, rodent, and insect issues like South Park.  Try again...

The majority of people that attend Ozen and Central won't be moving to other towns.  SMH.  You must don't know the demographics of the 2 schools or what's really going on where you pay taxes.  Typical Westender...

Not a west ender, I bet.  Even west end guys know the demographic makeup of Beaumont.  He probably owns a rent house, which is how he pays Beaumont taxes.  See many like him that and the throw subtle jabs every chance they get, but get sentimental when you talk about the 'Greenies'.

Not a Greenie. Not a West ender. Don't own a rent house in Beaumont. Can't make money doing that. Own 10 acres and pay more taxes than you. Man, I got both of you riled up over things that will happen. You will see.

Can somebody answer me this?  Why was Ozen opened in the first place?

It didn't seem to make sense only 12 years after BISD consolidated four high schools (French, Beaumont-Charlton-Pollard, West Brook and South Park) into 2 (Central and West Brook) to open a new high school.  What was the impetus behind that as it sure didn't make fiscal sense.

The old Hebert alum pushed for it and was hellbent on opening back up their neighborhood school.

Personally, I was against it and found nothing wrong with just Central and West Brook...
