Yes, everything positive for Bellville was luck. Everything positive for Gilmer was skill. Everything bad that happened to Bellville was due to Gilmer superiority. Everything bad that happened to Gilmer was luck.

It was a 2 point difference. They both had their chances.

I agree.   He clearly knows how to run a program, but IMO he’s one of the best offensive minds in high school football.   They are so multiple and diverse in what they do, yet they execute it all so well.

We are playing Jasper next… That’s the focus … it would be amazing to make it to the State championship for Carthage but one game at a time

Carthage is very young this year with many sophomores. This is the year to catch them, but I still think it is unlikely. Forget it after this year.

Carthage looked human against a Region III Division I finalist on the road..with a sophomore QB in his first start and with one of their key RB's going down with what's likely a season ending injury...the fact Carthage won in spite of that is kinda impressive if you are a glass half full fan

Great ball game, Kilgore way better this year. They have a dual threat Q/B that can score from anywhere on the field.
they have good size on both sides of the ball and a great defense.
My Carthage Dawgs D line won the ball game in the fourth Quarter. They sacked the QB and tackled running backs in the backfield to win the game.
Hard fought game by both teams.
I expect Kilgore to make a deep run for the DI Title.
The C Dawgs have an outstanding O line and run game. Young Surratt (Sophomore) QB threw the ball very well. He had 3 interceptions but two of them bounced off the receivers hands straight up in the air for the INT. One of the INT was returned for 6.
It was a great 1st game between two power house programs.
The 2023 Carthage Dawgs are going to be a well oiled machine before the playoff start.

Carthage D line was the best in all of 4A last year and they were all sophomores
We Dawg fans are very excited to see how much they have improved from last year. Bigger, stronger, and quicker off the ball. The Dawgs have two freshmen and 3 sophomores with DI offers.
The freshmen and sophomore class was loaded will talent last year. The freshman QB coach Surratt’s son threw 46 touchdown passes in district play and two more in the playoffs on varsity.
Freshmen  running back KJ Edwards has many DI offers. Ran the ball really well in the playoffs and state championship game. If I had to pick, it would have to be the entire D line.

You are right.  The kids have always been there.  It took a special coach to come in and "develop" the kids that were there into championship caliber athletes.  Something, like you alluded to, other coaches couldn't do.  From the start in 1924, there were 20 coaches before Surratt and NONE could do what he did.  But to be fair to the other coaches, there are only, at any one time, about 10% of the coaches that could.  Carthage is lucky to have one!  Surratt has earned his status!

Surratt had the talent of hiring coaches.
His staff starting from the junior high to high school started teaching kids how to play disciplined football, how to lift weights, film study, pride of the C an how to play a very physical type of football. He said his self, Carthage had good athletes but were not physical.
By the time you get to the junior varsity, you are playing hard nose physical football. Every little kid in Carthage wants to be a Carthage Dawg.
No matter if they have to wait until they are seniors for a starting position.
If you look back at every state championship team, see how many played FBS football (major DI college ball) you won’t find but a small number.
You will find a whole bunch they landed at smaller colleges. The point is the coaching staff developed those kids and made them the best they could be.
Carthage has had some of the best high school quarterbacks in Texas but only two played DI football Boggie went to USAT and one is at Tulane now. It is all about the program at Carthage.
Surratt, Preston, and all the other coaches beat with one heart beat and by the time the players get to the varsity, they have the same heart beat.

Well, that's not 100%, now is it.  Let me explain:  Since you are part of the "it's the kids" cabal, what if on day one that Surratt stepped foot on whatever campus you choose, the Championship kids started showing up also like the "it's the kids" crowd would say happened at Carthage?   So, yeah, according to some him winning a Title is very possible in that case scenario!
BTW, you stated Carthage wasn't devoid of kids when Surratt showed up.  So, why no Titles before Surratt and 9 After Surratt showed up?!  Maybe is it because bad to mediocre coaches, even with decent kids, can't do what "actual" Championship coaches can do with the same kids?!

Yes, because he has a winning system and the kids have bought into it. Newton, Carthage and WO-S all had elite defenses when they went to state. It isn’t hard to figure out that the more three and outs you have on defense the more opportunities your offense has to score.

Carthage never won a state championship until Coach Surratt got there. He hired all new coaches except one. Coach Surratt will go down as one of the best coaches in Texas high school football history. We Dawg fans are blessed to have him. All his coaching staff would make great head coaches after learning from him.

Weather, weather, weather is why no one likes different locations. AT&T gives every team a chance. No wind, rain, or cold. Home field advantage would make sense IF the teams played all their home games there. The one time it was played at NRG, attendance was way down.
90 percent of the teams that make it to the championship prefer AT&T.
