The 14th Amendment & Birthright Citizenship
5GallonBucket and one other reacted to bullets13 for a topic
Do you know what "perseverating" means? That's what you're doing. We're talking about something happening right now, and your only response is to (repeatedly) bring up something from 40 years ago. The irony is you keep asking this question but won't address why it was okay for Obama to deport so many people.2 points -

Thanks for asking. I’m opposed to doing away with property taxes for a few reasons- primarily, in regards to “how will we replace this tax revenue?” If you normally pay $3k per year in property taxes, you’d just expect to pick it up elsewhere, through sales tax or an excise (vat) tax. The only problem is that the redistribution of that burden won’t be passed down evenly. Parkdale Mall Will no longer pay property taxes, but WILL pay a higher sales tax on the lightbulbs and toilet paper that they buy. They’re going to pay way less. A guy that owns a dozen rent houses will see his property tax bill shrink dramatically. Will he pass the savings on to his tenants? Of course not. The people renting won’t see any change at all in their cost of living. But the average Joe Homeowner who’s already having trouble making ends meet will surely see an increase in the cost of everything he buys to survive. It’s been proven that increases in sales taxes hurt lower income people worse than wealthy people. A larger percentage of their income will be spent on taxes, while people with multiple properties see their tax liability decrease. Another HUGE problem is that money won’t be collected locally. Your sales tax dollars will be collected by an agency of the state that will then redistribute the funds as they see fit. Good luck getting those hairy-legged women in the Peoples’ Republic of Austin to send anything back our way. How well can rural counties lobby against the Harris, Bexar, Dallas, and Tarrant counties? We’ll all be sucking hind teat, if you know what I mean. The cost of education is high. Right now the average annual spending per student in Texas is almost $10k/year. Assuming you had three kids at home, could you afford to educate them at a cost of $30k per year? I sure couldn’t. Most people who have kids in school simply can’t afford to shoulder the cost of educating them by themselves. That’s how we ended up spreading the cost of their education among all property owners. I’m not saying that property taxes are fair, but it’s the most fair system that we’ve got. And to be frank, the voting public will vote against their own interests when instructed to. I’d be amazed if you didn’t just vote for politicians here in Texas that were in favor of giving tax dollars to rich parents to offset the cost of private education for their spoiled brats. Not necessarily you personally, but Texans as a group just sent their legislators to Austin with a mandate to make vouchers for private school for rich kids a public responsibility, while simultaneously arguing that “taxation is theft.” It’s bananas.2 points -

I agree with the better part of your post...especially the part of the ridiculous short-sighted mandate for school vouchers which I feel will cost all of us Texans in the long run. The property tax system is far from perfect, but it's definitely better than a state withholding tax in my opinion. One of my biggest issues with the property tax system (which is a whole 'nother topic altogether) is the property valuation process. For instance, certain aspects of your property are not taken into account when appraising its market value. My driveway was all but destroyed from hurricane Harvey. I appealed my valuation to the appraisal district, and I was told driveways were not considered when appraising the FMV. So if I have a $500,000 house, but no way to drive to the house, don't you think that has a bearing on the property valuation? Same goes for the land. Much of it damaged by the flooding, but according to them, it is inconsequential to the appraisal. I could list examples all day, but I'll stop there for now.1 point -

SCOTUS could also rule that birthright citizenship isn't guaranteed in the Constitution, agree with the original interpretation of the 14th, and end both questions with one ruling. Then, they'd have to specify that even illegal immigrants are granted certain rights of habeas corpus, and issue some type of ruling on minimal standards as it relates to current immigration law. No Amendments necessary, and no major changes to current law. While unpopular with the Left, it would be the cleanest way out for the Court and the country. I'm gonna' sit back with my popcorn and watch the show.1 point

2025 Astros
rupert3 reacted to AggiesAreWe for a topic
Not exactly. Astros pitching is in the top 5 of the AL in quality start category. Have 18 quality starts. League leader has 21. Houston still is in top 5 in AL in team ERA with 3.51 (up from a 3.20 a week ago which was 3rd). 2nd in league in opponent OBA at .216 and leads the league in WHIP at 1.15. Tied for league lead in strikeouts with 372. The bats have definitely improved over the last 3 weeks. Astros have brought the team batting average from .204 to now .250, which puts them 6th in the AL. They have improved their slugging percentage greatly from a dismal .323 to now .376 which is 6th in the league. Have an OPS of .700 which is top 5. Also is top 5 in OBP (.323) As for the division, only the Athletics have a better batting average (.259) and Rangers have a better ERA (3.34). Astro pitching has been their strength for the first 40 games (although have fallen a bit the last 6 games) while the hitting has really started to come on. If the hitting continues to trend upward and the pitching keeps it's top 5 status like it has all season so far, Houston will be right there at the top of the division. Like you said, still plenty of baseball to play.1 point -

Upon reading the amicus briefs for the case ‘Trump vs. CASA’, and knowing that 5 of the Justices have expressed concerns about the overreach of national injunctions from District Court judges, I now believe the Administration will win on the merits of removing the injunctions. How it will be worded for equal treatment will be interesting. I also believe the second issue—automatic birthright citizenship (so to speak)—is in serious jeopardy based on SCOTUS own precedent, historical references, and numerous case laws. The issue would then be up to the Legislature to craft a law that dealt with children who have already been given citizenship prior to a ruling. For any other geeks interested in this sort of stuff, the entire briefs SCOTUS is reviewing before Thursday are in the below link. Really fascinating if you’re interested in the real history and some civics of our government. The link will also be the one that provides live feeds during the hearing. SCOTUS doesn’t allow televised hearings. So, you’ll see written feeds of questions/answers/descriptions of emotions/etc. You won’t have to rely on biased news coverage either way. what if the law allowed for a situation where a criminal could break into your house and have a baby, and then not only would the baby be allowed to stay and live there in your house, but the mother would be allowed to as well so she could take care of the baby? As the owner of the house you'd even have to allot some of your monthly budget to help provide basic services and food for them. Sound absurd? It does to me as well. @UT alum, same question.1 point -
The 14th Amendment & Birthright Citizenship
SmashMouth reacted to OlDawg for a topic
The U.S. already has a limited birthright citizenship scenario—even though many claim it’s much more open than the original authors & Congressional approval intended. The question up for debate—which has never actually been adjudicated—is whether a child born to someone in the U.S. temporarily & illegally should automatically become a citizen. No one is attempting to end birthright citizenship altogether.1 point
