Excellent answer. Also playing teams that run specific offense. One that you wouldn't see in district play but would need to be familiar with during the playoffs. And rivalry games of course.

yes there's so much that goes into it....its always a good question though because of the variance you'll rarely get the same answer twice

This! I always wonder what goes through the thought process…

I think it varies by Coach, I've asked ten coaches this question and I get ten different answers....a lot just depends on where your program is at that time...for example teams like North Shore and Duncanville will play just about anyone willing to play them

If you are in a nine or ten team district and you move into district play quick you may want to try and get specific looks or systems based on those early non-district games that are crucial

If your program is down in the dumps you are probably just trying to find games you can be competitve in that maybe you can steal a win

If you are middle of the road to good you probably try and split your schedule...one really tough game, one game where you feel good about a win and one game thats maybe a coin flip...

If you are in a four or five team district that 5th and 6th non-district games are pretty much just seeing who else is in a small district and pairing up...thats how Brownsville Hanna and Amarillo Tascosa played a few years ago lol

Who cares this much? 4 pages of nonsense.  If your team makes it to state or even if they don't, if you wanna go, pack up and roll.  If it's to far I'm sure the teams playing will understand if you're not there to tell them to block somebody or tackle somebody.

It's the off-season there's not much else to discuss football wise...

I understand. I don't think the little incident yesterday should take them out of the loop.

I think yesterday's incident just underscores one of many issues with the Alamodome when it comes to state football..its not a super well-taken care of facility, there's a lot of work that needs to be done....San Antonio will put the work into the facility in time for the 2025 Final Four...much like in 2018, but then they won't do anything after that and 4-5 yrs post Final Four you have a facility that has degraded...rinse and repeat w/San Antonio lol

Maybe now that they have an XFL team the city will do a better job maintaining the 'Dome between big events

I had a nephew play for Liberty Hill. I watched games where they didn’t even mention throwing the ball. Liberty Hill is one of the top three teams in the state if not the top successful teams that run the slot T. I would say 2%! of the time they pass is about right for them. It may be even a little high.

If Liberty Hill throws it...something typically went terribly wrong...

SOC would have had about 50 people if the game had been in Houston. Number of fans doesn’t control the game outcome, but it certainly didn’t hurt they were able to have a decent crowd since the game was played in their backyard.

Hard to know how much SOC would travel to Houston...only time they've really traveled was the 2021 state semifinals when they went 3.5 hours to Abilene on a Friday night....Shotwell has a large home side that seats about 7500 and SOC did fill that up

Are there any stats that show a home field advantage for the DFW teams or are we just making that up because we don't want to drive to Arlington? I know some losing coaches have brought it up, but does anyone have any data that shows an advantage?  Also, how close does a team have to be to Arlington to get the advantage?  I know Carthage played Kennedale a few years back and they could almost walk to the stadium.  Do the Dallas area teams stay and home the night before and get up and go to the game?  Wouldn't it be better to have your team in a hotel the night before so you can set curfew and make sure kids aren't out doing kid things?

With TV broadcasts, the games will stay at one location.  And with them playing all games at one location, they have to be indoors to avoid weather delays screwing up the whole schedule.  Sounds like NRG and the Alamo dome have to make changes to be considered.  Also heard NRG kinda blew their shot in 2015 by gouging the UIL.  I don't know that for a fact.

Some local teams stay home, others decide to get a hotel...just kind of depends...
