AthleticSupporter - Jock got a reaction from Hagar in DuBois named Vidor new AD/Head Football Coach
I don't know the origin of the phrase but people have been saying versions of it for over 100 years.  I like the way Jim Collins describes it.
“Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.”
I am not questioning the hire.  I like Dubois and think a lot of him. I hope the Vidor faithful will support him and give him a chance.

AthleticSupporter - Jock reacted to AggiesAreWe in Well, my streak finally comes to an end
After 51 straight years of attending the boys basketball state tournament, my streak will end this season as I will not be attending this year. My goal since I started going was to attend as many as my dad did who started taking me when I was 8 years old in 1972. My dad ended up attending 50 straight, his last time going in 2007. I made 51 straight last season.
My priorities have changed over the years and my interest has waned some the last couple of years. Got grand sons to run around with now (T-ball, soccer, etc.) along with hanging out at the beach. With the wife and I retired now, just got other things I want to do. Actually I'll be hitting the new Horseshoe casino next week.
I enjoyed each and every trip to the state tourney. Great memories with my dad and got to see some great basketball. I have been truly blessed.
I may attend another state tourney (particularly if Silsbee goes) but the streak had to end sometime. Will miss hanging out with coaches, officials, media and fans that attended on a regular basis.
Good luck To Beaumont United next week. Bring home that 3rd state championship.

Congratulations to Lumberton’s 4x100 relay team, saw today this group made it to the state meet and will be running in Austin next week.  This is an impressive accomplishment!  Good luck representing the 409!!

I was being facetious.  Coincidentally.. I like the Slot-T.  I also like the spread.. and I like most offensive schemes when ran successfully.  None of them are designed to fail.  No coach says, "We're going to run this offense.. and hope for a few yards or even getting back to the line of scrimmage.  And if not, we'll just punt and try again next drive."  They're all designed to lead into substantial gains.. Having said that, the slot-t isn't good for playing catchup.  So when you need quick scores or to make up ground, it's not good.  But, the slot-t wins state titles every year.  Hard to say it isn't effective.  I like to think coaches do what they feel puts the team in the best situation to win games based on either their personnel or knowledge.

Curtis Barbay won two state titles in 36 years.  That's a lot of "7 year windows" that he didn't get it done.  Maybe they should just leave him alone.

Like I've said many times before matthews is NOT just there because of his wins and losses and nor is coach peevey. Its the character of the program. The effort. The spirit. The lessons you're teaching the young kids. As far as character and effort goes. You'll be hard to find many better than coach Matthews.

Just looking at 1 year is not very scientific.  But that's all we have is 1 year in Houston so let's look at it.  How many Dallas-area teams were playing in the state game at NRG, how good were they and what kind of following did they have?  Here is the lineup:
    2A Division 1  Canadian   Refugio 61-20
    2A Division 2  Bremond   Albany 35-20
    3A Division 1  Brock   Cameron Yoe 43-33
    3A Division 2  Waskom   Franklin 33-21
4A Division 1  Waco La Vega   Argyle 33-31
    4A Division 2  West Orange-Stark   Celina 22-3
5A Division 1  Richmond George Ranch   Mansfield Lake Ridge 56-0
5A Division 2  Cedar Park   Frisco Lone Star  22-6
6A Division 1  Galena Park North Shore   Austin Westlake  21-14 OT
6A Division 2  Katy  Austin Lake Travis  34-7
Kyler Murray and the Allen crowds of the previous 2 years were gone.  Metroplex teams, the ones that made it, got dominated.  Argyle, Celina, Lake Ridge and Lone Star all lost and the most were not even close.  So, yea most people from the metroplex didn't want to travel to Houston to watch those arse whoopings.

People keep pointing out the one year at NRG. There were three or four newer schools playing. 5A-DI George Ranch vs Lake Ridge (15,743).  5A-DII Cedar Park vs Frisco Lone Star (13,479). Not much of a following built up with a lack of alumni. Plus the big thing people don’t like to bring up. DFW doesn’t travel as well. They’ll show up when it’s in their backyard. Katy vs Lake Travis drew 43,718 in Houston. North Shore vs Westlake was 28,841.
Schools within 100 miles of AT&T Stadium went (5-1) this year. China Spring is 109 miles away and also won. There is a real home field advantage for the DFW.
Stephenville (west of DFW) might have brought 5,000 fans in 1999 to the Astrodome. That was crazy to me considering the monster program they had built.
I like the idea of a 3 stadium rotation and San Antonio is most central location with a dome if a rotation isn’t possible.
There’s also the crowd talking about the experience the kids get playing in AT&T. Well I’ll say Newton was just a excited to win a title in Tyler Rose Stadium when the weather was in the 20’s as they were when winning it AT&T.

I'm trying to teach you how to fish instead of just feeding you a fish.  But I'm tired of watching you struggle so I'll give you the answers. lol
Here are the current enrollment #s for 8th grade thru 12th grade for 22-23 school year.
8th (335)  9th (336)  10th (315)  11th (263)  12th (316).  We all know these #s fluctuate.  Take the senior class, for example.  They have 316 this year but they had 358 their 9th grade year.  My point is that if we replace the 12th grade enrollment with the 8th grade enrollment, snapshot next year would be 1249.  I would expect the new UIL cutoff # to be around 1330 and that is being conservative.  Even if the cutoff # stayed at 1299, Lumberton still remains in 4A.  Facts don't care about anyone's feelings.
