  1. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS WEST BROOK BRUINS 2019 Record: 9-3 Overall; 5-2 District Co-Runner Up in District 21-6A While the West Bruins' 2019 season didn't quite match the 2018 6A, Division II State Championship Final appearance, it was definitely a successful season for the Bruins, but it wasn't enough to keep the folks in Beaumont pleased. Head coach Eric Peevey will return a younger squad (eight starters return) along with members of an 8-1-1 JV to keep the Bruin mojo going along. But the Young Bruins are excited for the opportunity to represent the 409 in a rugged new 21-6A which features 6 team who made the playoffs in 2019. COACHING Head Coach: Eric Peevey Assistants: Jeff Breaux (Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends), Tommie Barrett (Defensive Coordinator/Safeties), Heath Gerlufsen (Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Ends), Beau Berluson (Running Backs), Cameron Debesse (Wide Receivers), Travis Tates (Defensive Line), Chris Coats (Offensive Line/Strength and Conditioning), Kevin Dotson (Offensive Line), Parker James (Cornerbacks), Kurt Zihlman (Quarterbacks), Don Smith (Kickers), Shane McGallion (Asst. - Linebackers), Renwick Johnson (Asst. Defensive Backs), Tristan Nolan (Assistant - Wide Receivers), Justin Brock (Asst. - Offensive Line), Michael Ryals (Asst. - Running Backs/Quarterbacks) OFFENSE The Bruins will return five starters in 2020 from a unit which averaged 41 points and 520 yards a game in 2019. The offense, which will look to stretch defenses from side to side, will be lead by junior quarterback (and LSU commit Bryce Anderson) full time after seeing spot action last year. Also seeing time behind center will be senior Braden Shelton and sophomore Ja'Von Sorrell. A young Bruins will feature lone returning starter Joe Hayes (250 yd, 3 TD in 2019) along with explosive juniors Montavian Jones and Andre Dennis. Look for senior Jordan Carmouche, junior Michael Collins and sophomore Ja'Von Sorrell to make plays at receiver. The Bruins will be stocked at tight end as senior Tyler Tucker and junior Ben Bennett give the Bruins two big time tight ends. The running back position will be a key strength as the 3 headed monster of senior Jordan Guidry (467, 8 TDs in 4 games before going down to injury), junior all-district pick Jamicheal Foxhall (617 yd, 7 TDs) and senior Bud Manuel (318 yd, 4 TD). All of them will run behind a young offensive line which has only one returning starter, senior Cam Hardy. He will be joined by Ashton Janise, Nathan Banks, Chris Gorsich, Quan Vo and Artis Hall with junior Mykel Janise and sophomore Braxton Chambers to play big roles. DEFENSE Three starters return to a Bruin defense which will feature a 3-4 front in 2020. The front seven will be anchored by senior nose tackle Darea McCarthy and junior Cam Coleman. Seniors Keishaun Cantue, Caleb Rawls, along with juniors Ian Lane, Chauncey Phillips and Jayden Davis all look to see action at defensive end. The linebacker corp will feature two returning lettermen at inside linebacker, senior Gabe Silva and junior Garrett Richard. Also seeing action on the inside will be senior Bobby Jones and junior Trey Durousseau. Junior outside linebackers Jadarius Hamilton and Justin Williams should end the year with several sacks. The Bruin secondary will feature a lot of new faces as only senior free safety Caleb David and Anderson, who will see only limited action due to assuming full time quarterback duties. David will be paired with junior strong safety transfer (from Goose Creek Memorial) Reggie Holmes. Senior Clifford Bradley and junior transfer (from Silsbee) Jayden Briscoe will also see time at free safety while sophomore Darius Simien will see time at strong safety. Junior Khristian Pugh and seniors Addison Fulton and Leedrick Senegal will see the lion's share of action at cornerback SPECIAL TEAMS Senior Keith Delahousse will handle the place kicking for West Brook while Sheldon will be doing the punting. Anderson, Jones, Sorrell, Foxall, Hayes and Dennis will share the Bruin return duties. 2. This caught me off-guard. I had started sending the questionnaires out to coaches and Coach Haynes was one of the first to turn his in. That has never happened with a coach who intended on leaving his position.
  3. Just read a report that the PAC 12 is considering a conference only schedule.
  4. No. I communicated with officials last week and the search is still on. They were supposed to interview a couple of candidates this week yet they are still accepting applications.
  5. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS DAYTON BRONCOS 2019 Record: 1-9 Overall; 0-7 District 8th Place in District 12-5A-II 2019 was a rough year for the Dayton Broncos as they managed only one win the entire season and failed to gain a district win. However, 2020 is a year of change and it starts at the top. Former head coach Jeff Nations has moved into a athletic director only role and the Broncos will be looking to former New Caney offensive coordinator Blake Ware, who has vast experience in the TAPPS ranks as head coach, to lead the Broncos back to prominence. An experienced offense will be counted on to carry a young defense for that to occur. COACHING Head Coach: Blake Ware Assistants: Philip Pendleton (Offensive Coordinator), Freddie Strange (Defensive Coordinator) OFFENSE Ware's version of the Bronco spread will feature eight returning starters. Returning to trigger the offense will be senior quarterback Christian Olige (903 yd passing and 500 yd rushing, 8 TD in 2019). Senior wideout Davin Lee (7 catches, 162 yd, 2 TD in 2019) returns to lead a Bronco receiver corp which will feature juniors Ashton Garner and Donavan Orebo. Senior tailback Gene Fontenot will lead the Dayton rushing attack. Senior tackle Logan Strong will anchor an offensive line which will also feature senior guard Landon Wood, senior lineman Pierre Broussard and junior linemen Brennan Chauvin and Trey Rodgers. Look for sophomore Vernon Harrison to be counted on in the Bronco offense as well. DEFENSE The Bronco 4-2-5 defense will be a young one as only four starters return from 2019. The undoubted leaders up front will be senior defensive tackle Tim Sjolander (2nd team all-district in 2019) and junior outside linebacker Cam'Ron Willis (102 tackles, 2 sacks in 2019). They will be counted on to help out young secondary that will likely feature Harrison. SPECIAL TEAMS Sophomore Gustavo Orozco, who handled the punting duties in 2019, will be counted on to do the punting and place kicking in 2020. Returners will be finalized after summer workouts. SCHEDULE Aug. 27 - at Montgomery Lake Creek, 7:00 pm Sept. 4 - Livingston, 7:00 pm Sept. 10 - at Goose Creek Memorial, 7:00 pm Sept. 18 - OPEN Sept. 25 - Crosby, 7:30 pm* Oct. 2 - at Port Neches-Groves, 7:30 pm* Oct. 9 - Santa Fe (HC), 7:30 pm* Oct. 16 - at Nederland, 7:30 pm* Oct. 23 - Texas City, 7:30 pm* Oct. 30 - Barbers Hill, 7:30 pm* Nov. 6 - at Kingwood Park, 7:00 pm* *-District games HC - Homecoming STADIUM INFORMATION Name: Houston Methodist Field at Bronco Stadium Location: W. 6. Anyone else from the area aside from West Brook and United.
  7. Some editing mistake. They aired the same footage about a week later claiming that it was a Pennsylvania hospital: [Hidden Content]
  8. And as I recall, a pretty good baseball player, too. It is a shame that some idiot who, instead of taking Santa's lead and naming a Bridge City back (Steve Worster) who is still notable in Southeast Texas lore, chose to use a young man (who from all accounts an excellent person as well as a good athlete) as punchline to his really lame joke.
  9. Well, the answer for #2 did give me pause as for the Mustangs, it is 4 rounds. However, for most teams in this area, 3 is the benchmark. As to #9, you again have corrected me as I thought that one was at LU.
  10. 1) Yes 2) 3 rounds 3) Although it sounds good to say "It took the state champs to knock us out of the playoffs"....no. 4) West Orange-Stark. And while some think this expectation should change after the last realignment, it is state or bust. 5) I guess this would only tangentially change the playoff format, but my change would be to require that districts of less than 6 schools play a double round robin district schedule. I hate that a team can get into the playoffs with one district win. 6) It's current streak - 15 years (2004-present) 7) 72-26-1 (or 73-26 as WO-S advanced in that tie game on penetrations) 8 - All classifications 9) The Astrodome was pretty good to WO-S in the '80s. The Mustangs have done well at the Butch and Randall Reed Stadium, losing only once at each venue (ironically, to the same team). 10) It has been more than 30 years since WO-S hosted a playoff game, but I did attend that one.
  11. The funding, like the projects are usually done in stages. If they hadn't sold the bonds yet, then they have probably not slated for ALL of the renovations to occur at one time. It doesn't mean they won't ever do it.
  12. Congrats to Micheal, Devwah and Grayland, but I AM NOT ROOTING FOR THE EAGLES!!! LOL!
  13. I am mistaken. But I could have swore that it wasn't 'til summer time.
  14. Last year, WO-S waited until after graduation in late May/early June to start their turf and had it done in plenty of time to have one of their scrimmages (the other was scheduled to be away) there. Be patient, it will get done.
