  1. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS HAMSHIRE-FANNETT LONGHORNS 2019 Record: 7-4 Overall, 2-2 District 3rd Place in District 10-4A-II 2019 saw the continued progression of the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns under second year coach Mark Waggoner as the Longhorn's secured their first winning season since 2015. To continue their winning ways, the Longhorns will rely on a relatively experienced squad (five starters return on each side of the ball) to again be in the hunt for a playoff spot. COACHING Head Coach: Mark Waggoner Assistant Coaches: Blake Waggoner (Offensive Coordinator), Jeremy Abshier (Defensive Line), Brody Fesco (Offensive Line), Jeremy Seymour (Secondary), Justin Richter (Linebackers), Wesley Parks (Receivers), Tigee Rideaux (Receivers), James Knowles (Freshmen), Josh Tilley (Freshmen) OFFENSE Five starters return to the Hamshire-Fannett spread offense in 2020. While the search for a new quarterback to replace the graduated Marcus Morris will likely extend into fall practice, the running back position will be settled as junior Jordan Joiner will shoulder the rushing load with junior Jordan Denson also seeing time in the backfield. The new Longhorn quarterback will have the luxury of a experienced and talented receiver corp as senior wide outs Garrett Picou (1st team all-district) and Evan Viator (2nd team all-district) as well as junior Kheagian Heckaman (2nd team all-district) will be joined by junior Jeremiah Ardoin. Senior offensive guard Vance Moore returns to lead a line which will also feature senior center Layne Werner...who saw plenty of action in 2019...senior offensive tackle and JV standout Khyler Nonette, senior lineman Hunter Freeman and sophomore Cayden Ferrell, who might be a hidden gem. DEFENSE Five starters return to the Longhorn defense in 2020. A line which will start out the season short on experience will feature returning senior Blake Briggs (2nd team all-district) along with juniors Colton Singletary and Adam Bueno as well as senior Reese Rogers. Junior linebacker Brendan Walters will head a linebacker corp which will also feature Denson and senior linebackers Jonathan Tate and Caleb Chandler. Senior free safety Viator (1st team all-district) and senior strong safety Anakin Hall (2nd team all-district at cornerback), along with junior cornerback Blake Biggs and junior Colin Dorsey will roam the Longhorn secondary. SPECIAL TEAMS Senior Eddie Melendez will handle the place kicking for Hamshire-Fannett while the other special teams assignments will be determined at fall practice.   2. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS SHEPHERD PIRATES 2019 Record 3-7 Overall; 2-3 District 3rd Place in District 10-4A-II The 2019 Shepherd Pirates extended their playoff streak to 6 years in a row. Miles Robison's Pirates will have a steep hill to climb to extend that streak as they not only are competing in a district in which the degree of difficulty has definitely ticked upward, but will we doing so with a very young squad as only three offensive starters return. COACHING Head Coach: Miles Robison Assistant Coaches: Cedric White (Offensive Line), Ben Goffney (Tight End/Fullbacks), Jeremy Bennett (Running Backs), Kenny Washington (Defensive Coordinator/Secondary), Josh Meeker (Linebackers), Cameron Wendel (Defensive Line) OFFENSE Only three starters return to the Shepherd Gun Wing offense in 2020. Sophomore H.D. Green steps in to take over the quarterback duties. Sophomore running back Tanner Lacey, junior back Lane Baker and sophomore Andrew Thain will shoulder the rushing load for the PIrates. The offensive line is the only area to return any experience as senior lineman Brice Major (2nd team all-district) will be joined by fellow senior Ja'Kiry Brown and junior Mason Walters as well as sophomore Landon Robbins. DEFENSE The Pirate defense will see eleven new faces in its 4-2-5 defensive set in 2020. Robbins will head the defensive line. Junior Ryan Sawyer will lead the Shepherd linebacker corp and junior Alonso DeLeon will anchor the Pirate defense from his safety spot.   3. Well, that is a bit of news to me. Then he must some have some person who answered his email accounts for him as he has typed out the answers to the annual preview questionnaires that I sent him. And, to me anyway, he has been very complimentary and thanked us for what we do for local high school sports........including just a couple of weeks before he was dismissed. There may be issues in Hardin ISD, but this site it not the root of them.
  4. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS WEST SABINE TIGERS 2019 Record: 3-6 Overall, 1-4 District 5th Place in District 12-2A-I 2019 was a year of struggle as the West Sabine Tigers went 3-6 last season. However, 2020 will be a year of excitement in Pineland as Coach Jerred Wallace returns ten starters on each side of the ball and will be competing in Class 2A, Division II. Both should bode well for the Tigers' chances to getting back to the playoffs. COACHING Head Coach: Jerred Wallace Assistant Coaches: Kerry Stone (Defensive Coordinators), Nick Williams (Running Backs/Cornerbacks), Tony Allen (Receivers/Safeties), Colton Wager (Defensive Line/Receivers) OFFENSE Ten starters return to the Tiger Air Raid offense in 2020. Junior Quentin Smith will return to lead the West Sabine offense. He will be joined in the backfield by senior running back Julius Mason (1st team all-district, 1000 yd in 2019) with senior H-back Colton Anderson also seeing time. The Air Raid offense will feature a talented which will be headed by senior wide out Cade Ross (2nd team all-district), junior receiver Garrett Cartwright and sophomores Hunter Murphy and Christian Williamson. Senior lineman Zach Retherford (1st team all-district) will lead an offensive line which will also feature juniors Peyton Maddox and Tate Lane. DEFENSE Ten starters also return to the West Sabine 3-4 defense. Mason, Retherford and senior Hunter Davis will anchor the defensive line. Anderson and Ross will lead the Tiger linebacker corp. Smith and senior Jacob Chambliss (2nd team all-district) will anchor the Tiger secondary along with Murphy (2nd team all-district) at cornerback. Expect sophomore Blaine Borque to contribute to the Tiger defense as well. SPECIAL TEAMS Murphy will do the place kicking for West Sabine and Cartwright will do the punting.   5. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS SHELBYVILLE DRAGONS 2019 Record: 7-4 District, 3-2 District 3rd Place in 12-2A-I The 2019 season started just fine for the Shelbyville Dragons as David Benbow's guys ripped off seven wins in their first eight games, but a Week 9 loss to Groveton sent the Dragons into a tailspin from which they were not able to recover, falling in the bi-district round of the playoffs. 2020 brings hope that there will be no repeat of the 2019 late season spin as six starters return on offense and eight on defense, which leaves Shelbyville ready to compete for a district title. Senior wideout Jarod Perez returns to lead a receiver corp which also includes junior slot receiver Ta'Larrian Lister and junior wide out Michael Carillo. A veteran line returns for Shelbyville which include junior tackles Trey Cartwright (2nd team all-district) and Dawson Jackson, senior guard Dawson Windham, junior center Eli Taylor, junior guard Tyler Merriman. DEFENSE Eight starters return to the Shelbyville defense. The Dragons' odd man front will feature senior two time all-state pick Grady Clay and Cartwright (1st team all-district) at defensive end, Windham (1st team all-district) and senior Hagan Crumpton at defensive tackle and Seth Freeman at nose guard. Senior Caleb Ridgeway (1st team all-district) and Dylan Robbins will line up at linebacker while Standley (2nd team all-district) will anchor the secondary which also features Lister and senior defensive back Jarod Perez. SPECIAL TEAMS Junior Dylan Robbins will handle both the kicking and punting duties for Shelbyville. Standley and Lister will be the primary kick returners.   6. I am just dumbfounded on many different levels about this statement from the district. Some have stated that the statement was a "clarification." To me, it left more questions than answers.
  7. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS SILSBEE TIGERS 2019 Record: 9-5 Overall, 4-1 District Class 4A, Division II State Semifinalist The Silsbee Tigers had another historic season, capturing the Class 4A, Region III Championship and marking the first time in school history that the Tigers had captured a Regional championship in back to back years. With six starters on the offense and eight on defense, the Tigers appear primed to make a run at three in a row. COACHING Head Coach: Randy Smith Assistant Coaches: Trent Jones (Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach), Cory Harrison (Defensive Coordinator), Dustin Westbrook (Passing Game Coordinator), Jarrod Morris (Special Teams Coordinator), Michael Nelson (Quarterbacks), Ronnie Lofton (Linebackers), Avante Smith (Offensive Line), Radi Verrett (Defensive Line), Keaton Baker (Defensive Line), Brett Hillen (Junior High), Michael Andrade (Junior High), James Collins (Junior High), Ira Brooks (Junior High) OFFENSE Six starters return to the Tiger Multiple set offense in 2020. Two year starter Raymond Foster returns to the quarterback position but look for senior Shan Gilder, Jr. to also get snaps behind center. Senior Antonius Alrine (1st team all-district) will also return along with senior fullback Quincy Kelly Jr. Sophomore fullback Jayron Williams should also see some time in the Tiger backfield. Senior wide out Rueben Hatton (2nd team all-district) will pace a receiver group that will also included Gilder, Wiliams and returning tight end Ayden Bell (2nd team all-district) and newcomer Tre' Padilla. Senior Noah Duke will lead an otherwise inexperienced line which will include senior Zach Tillman, juniors Kadin Stone, Josh Bradley and Leo Rodriguez and sophomore Jayce Jones. DEFENSE Eight starters return to the Silsbee 3-4 defense in 2020. Seniors Ayden Bell (1st team all-district) and Caleb Buse return to guide things on the defensive line. Kelly and Williams will man the inside linebacker positions while Gilder and senior Malik Jones will control things outside with Stone also seeing action at outside linebackers. Hatton (1st team all-district), at safety, and Arline, at cornerback, will guide an otherwise young secondary which will see contributions from senior safety Jason Cochran, and sophomores Max Brisbane, Kevin Martin and Geremiah Jackson.   8. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS HARDIN HORNETS 2019: 3-7 Overall, 1-6 District 7th Place in District 12-3A-I The 2019 was a year of struggle for the Hardin Hornets as they were able to garner only one district win in route to a 3-7 season. While a new face will be on the sidelines for the Hornets, there will be a number of familiar faces returning as Hardin returns eight starters on each side of the ball to compete in the always tough 10-3A-I. COACHING Head Coach: Ned Barrier Assistant Coaches: Dylan Bethea (Defensive Coordinator), Steve Firmin (Offensive Coordinator), Mitch Villemez (Defensive Backs), Dennis Devinny (Tight Ends/Running Backs) OFFENSE Eight starters return to the Hardin offense in 2020. Senior quarterback Austin Potez (1st team all-district) returns to guide the Hornet multiple set offense. Junior running back Caden Elmore will join him in the backfield. Senior tight end Trenton Dickey (1st team all-district) and junior wide out Logan Parker will head the Hornet receiver corp. Senior Paul Thonsgaard (12-3A-I Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year) will head an offensive line which will feature junior offensive tackle Colby Barrett (2nd team all-district) and junior linemen Shane Holst and A.J. Scott. DEFENSE Eight starters return to the Hardin 3-4 defense in 2020. Defensive end Holst (2nd team all-district) and Thongaard at nose tackle will pace the Hornet defensive line. Senior inside linebacker Dickey (1st team all-district) and junior inside backer Ryan Harris will be joined by returning senior outside linebacker Anthony Yeo and newcomer junior Dyian Morgan. Potez, Elmore and junior Ty Tinkle will patrol the Hardin secondary. SPECIAL TEAMS The kicking and punting duties will be determined during fall practice. Elmore will be the primary kick returner.   9. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS 2019 Record: 4-6 Overall, 3-4 District 5th Place in District 21-6A 2019 left the La Porte Bulldogs in a position they are not used to, on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. However, a couple of factors bode well for the Bulldogs' chances to return to the playoffs in 2020. First, Coach Anthony Renfro returns a veteran squad (7 offensive starters and 8 defenders return) to compete. Second, the Bulldogs for the first time in forever, will not be competing in Class 6A but rather in Class 5A, Division I to bring the Bulldogs back to the playoffs. COACHING Head Coach: Anthony Renfro Assistant Coaches: Quinton Jones (Offensive Coordinator), Dan Swaim (Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator), Jamie Arizpe (Special Teams Coordinator/Wide Receivers), A.J. Keesee (Quarterbacks), Jacob Freeman (Offensive Line), Joe Cornett (Tight Ends), Ryan Harr (Offensive Line), Doug Tamcke (Cornerbacks), Aaron Pohl (Inside Linebackers), Mike Perry (Outside Linebackers), Lee Martin (Defensive Line), Robert Wells (Defensive Line), Danny Valenzuela (Defensive Line) OFFENSE Seven starters return to the La Porte Multiple I offense. Senior quarterback Cooper Upshaw will guide the Bulldog offense. The multiple I will be stacked with senior running back Makai Hisatake, senior fullback Dezmond Brodnax, and sophomore running back Kobie Garrett. Aside from helping the offensive line, senior Champion Traylor (2nd team all-district) and senior H back Tucker Tettenhorst, will head the La Porte passing attack. They will be operating which features returning starters Albert Hernandez and Jordan Perry, as well as juniors Zane Hayman and Noah Smith. DEFENSE Eight starters return to the La Porte 3-4 Cover 4 defense. Returning to lead the defensive line will be seniors Albert Regis and Ismael Gutierrez. They will be joined by senior Nicholas Cooper with sophomore Nathan White also contributing. At linebacker, senior outside linebackers Thomas Shrader and Hunter Anderson and senior inside linebacker Eric Bright return. Senior linebacker Alex Duron, junior linebackers Hayden WIllet and Patrick Teepe and sophomore Landon Weeden will also be counted on to contribute. Senior rover Terince Siafa, junior free safety Justin Kay and senior cornerback Travis Greenawalt will roam the Bulldog secondary. SPECIAL TEAMS La Porte will have a rare luxury as two kickers, juniors Levi Hillborn and Patrick Allen, will handle the kicking as well as the punting. Greenawalt and Kay will be the primary returners.   10. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS WEST HARDIN OILERS 2019 Record: 4-7 Overall, 2-3 District 4th Place in District 12-2A-II Despite a rocky season, the rugged young West Hardin Oilers were able to qualify for the Class 2A, Division II playoffs. Unfortunately, the Oilers ran into eventual state champion Mart who made sure the Oilers' stay in the playoffs was short. Even though the Oilers move up to Division I in 2020, the Oilers do have a large grpoup of returning players (six starters on each side of the ball) and should be competitive. COACHING Head Coach: George Taylor Assistant Coaches: Cody Cash, Lin Ellis, Dan Toler, Brian Gay, Austin Jones OFFENSE Six starters return to the Oiler offense in 2020. Senior quarterback Austin Collier steps in at the helm of the West Hardin offense. Senior running back Randon Kelley returns to the Oiler backfield where juniors Zach Bradley and Bradley Brown will also see action. They will be operating behind a veteran offensive line which will be led by seniors Ty Gazaway (1st team all-district) and Bradley Thompson (2nd team all-district), junior Josiah Berry, sophomore Kaden Robinson and Rodie Ruffino. DEFENSE Six starters return to the Oiler defense in 2020. Berry, Thompson and Robinson return to head the defensive line. Kelley, Gazaway and Brown will line up at linebacker. Collier and Bradley will anchor the West Hardin secondary. SPECIAL TEAMS All special teams positions will be determined in Fall camp.   12. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS FRIENDSWOOD MUSTANGS 2019 Record: 9-3 Overall, 5-2 District Co-Runner Up in District 10-5A-I Another elite squad joining the SETXsports umbrella will be the Friendswood Mustangs. In 2019, Robert Koopman's Mustangs went 9-3, a great mark for any team. However, the folks in south Harris County aren't satisfied with great. A veteran squad (7 offensive starters and 5 defenders) returns for Mustangs in an effort to sit atop new District 9-5A-I. DEFENSE Five starters return to the Lumberjack 3-4 defense in 2020. Junior Jeremiah Gums (1st team all-district defensive end) will lead a defensive line which will also include senior defensive end Bryon Poindexter, senior lineman Jaylen Jackson and sophomore Adrian Villanueva. Dodge and senior Tyler Ibarra return to lead a linebacker corp which will feature seniors Julian Acevedo and Jose Garcia. As always, we will be starting our annual team previews on July 1st with the preview schedule to come on June 15th! We have also been solidifying our broadcast schedule with our usuals Silsbee, Newton, East Chamber and Lumberton. But our board owner Jordan Wilson has been busy lining up things. Early last week, he scored an agreement to broadcast Vidor Pirate football this season! And just today, Jordan reached an agreement with Beaumont ISD Athletic Director Ron Jackson to broadcast Beaumont ISD games this season! That will guarantee coverage of the two biggest local schools in our coverage area and a district that has been ignored for far too long.
