Were y’all in a spread formation or under center ?
Under center. No spread that I recall seeing back in those days. Today's wide receivers were called "split ends" back then. Typical plays had a split end and a tight end, two tight ends on obvious running plays. Backfield was usually 2 halfbacks and a halfback. Sometimes one of the halfbacks would move into what is called the "slot" today.

Ironically, in 64 season the Pirates had an awesome passing attack. It’s possible they had more passing yards than any team in the Triangle. 😂😂😂
Hagar, you are right about that passing attack. Larry Tilton was QB1 and had 18 TD passes that set an OC record at the time. Was district MVP. His favorite target was Jerry Wheeler. Wheeler had 11 TDs receiving that year and was leading OC receiver.

I can only guess that they still can’t get the old gold to hold its color. Every team I’ve seen with a uniform part gold, the part gold is usually yellow. That dark old gold was unique. Btw, to my knowledge, Ned has never had the old gold so we’d still be unique.
@Tim Rigginsmight update my description. I was out of school then.
Old Gold pants and jerseys. Black numbers. Two narrow black stripes, 2 narrow white stripes around the sleeves, (not over the shoulder pads.) Same type black and white stripes down the outside of the pants. Solid old gold helmets. White belts, white socks, black cleats. (I'm looking at my junior year picture) '65 was the last year for the gold uniforms, which did look awesome . Next year, '66, we went to the all black home uniforms with the gold and black checkerboard strip outlined by white stripes over the shoulder pads. Same kind of design down the pants legs. In '66 you could also "earn" a black helmet with your play. Everyone started the season with a gold helmet, but the coveted black helmet was awarded according to your play. It was a big deal to wear the black helmet.

That really is a rare feat for all OC teams to win. But that's awesome you were a sophomore during that amazing season.
1964 was a special, near magical season for VHS and the city itself. Will always remember it.

I think this is the second week this season it's happened that all OC teams won. Still pretty rare. And you're probably right that 5-0 goes all the way back to '64, (my soph year btw)

Never heard of a team winning with so many fumbles, but they cleaned it up the second half. Ugly win but I'll take it!
Like coach Sark said, "I'd rather win ugly, than lose pretty"

Wow, pouring it on now.

Game's not over yet. Need a long drive to close it out.

Nobody back deep.
Pirates takeover at inside of their 10.
Guess that fumbled punt earlier influenced that decision.

You guys are doing a great job on the updates, this is a community effort. The district is going to be wild this year.
Agree, "on any given Friday"

A touchdown here would be nice.

Halftime. For those of you losing count, Vidor has fumbled 4 times.
Bet Matthews was going bonkers on the sideline...will be a halftime "talking to"

I’ll be at the game. I think the game could go either way. No one thought we could beat Houston Kinkaid that was ranked #2 in private school last week. I understand you have to prove yourself as a contender. I think the teams that make the playoffs will be HH Vidor LCM and Livingston.
My picks as well, LCM is much improved, teams better not sleep on them.

Great game tonight! My voice is hoarse and I got a pounding headache. Good luck the rest of the season, Dawgs. Glad the Pirates are idle this next week, we're pretty beat up after tonight.
Homecoming type crowd on Vidor side, I think most were standing from the time of Jasper's kickoff till the end of the game.

Never would have thought this game would wind up 8-7. Both defenses dominated.

Yes, Coached by the miracle worker, Edgar Payne. The 62 Team went 0-10. Enter Coach Payne and in 63 went 6-4. Then 64 13-0-1. As I remember, Coach Payne retired due to health problems. Miracle worker? Absolutely.
12-0-1, semifinal game vs San Marcos was tied 21-21, but the Rattlers advanced to play Palestine in the championship game with a 5-4 edge in penetrations. Second tie breaker was first downs and the third was total yardage. Vidor had a significant advantage in both of those. The 2011 Montana Quirante led team would be a close second IMO.

Vidor, Silsbee, Ozen, Jasper??, LCM I think
Plus Lumberton and Livingston. Not sure about LCM. 19-4A was not as strong as 20-4A, but it was a competitive district. Recall some close games
