If this is true and Texas passed on Briles - for any reason - could be the worst mistake Texas has made in a long time.  Strong was not a bad choice but you put Briles with what he can do with 3 star

Barring a miracle, Barnes is gone. The name I am hearing, and have been hearing for the past few years, is Shaka Smart. That's more the popular choice though and this AD has already shown he will hire who he wants. He is a basketball guy though so I suspect it will be a decent hire.

Any job at Texas is the best in the world. I can't wait to have grandkids so I can tell them about their last search for a football coach.


Coach searching is very trying when just the thought of someone bolting to grab a prestigious job at Texas causes other universities to lock down their coaches with substantial raises. Don't brainwash your grandkids and have them think your way.

I don't think Texas is a downgrade from Baylor as was mentioned on this thread. With the right coach, Texas could be one of the top basketball schools in the country. Baylor has a ceiling in which Texas doesn't.

That being said, Scott Drew wouldn't be near the top of my list. He has had a lot of off the court issues in his program that would keep him from getting the Texas job anyway.

If this is true and Texas passed on Briles - for any reason - could be the worst mistake Texas has made in a long time.  Strong was not a bad choice but you put Briles with what he can do with 3 star recruits and give him the recruits that Texas will have regardless of who is the coach - you might have had that Texas dynasty back a lot sooner than even Texas fans think was possible.

I guess you would call it a "pass." He let it be known (through his agent of course) if he was offered (without interviewing, etc.), he would come. This was Patterson's show and he refused to take that route. I had this confirmed by a pretty prominent Baylor alum who is very involved with the program. Same guy initially told me (right after Mack "retired") there was no way Briles would leave for Texas.

I was told this samething by Briles fam while working out West.

I am wondering if he is gone or not - you would think if he is gone you would want the replacement as soon as possible.

Did the late season minor surge buy him another year at the helm?


I'm still hearing he's gone. Not sure the delay. Might have something to do with replacements still coaching or recently eliminated.

      Really.. I have talked to many high school coaches, players and college coaches about this subject. (by the way, if you have not guessed it... I'M A HIGH SCHOOL COACH - Football and Baseball). I have had several Big D1 players that went to Baylor, Texas, Texas  A&M, UH, and LSU tell me their pitch counts... What they were allowed to throw. How long they had to sit till next outing. All of these were in writing by their college pitching coach.  Even seen a kid this year NOT Allowed to pitch in the First round of playoffs cause his pitching coach from LSU told him not to cause of how many he had thrown the week before. They keep tabs on kids all the time.  Kids stay in contact with their college coaches all year.   I have Coached in Local and State ALL-Star football and baseball games. I have been on selection committees. I can tell you for a fact, a invite is sent out to all state players. Most Big College players do not accept the invite.
