And some people believe that all of the world's problems can be fixed with other peoples' money.  Nothing is stopping you or anybody else from driving down to the admin building and scratching a personal check for however much you believe you can afford.
The funny thing is that if you really felt so "charitable" "benevolent" and "giving" you'd at least be willing to forego your homestead exemption.  But you won't.

Actually, they'd say "My truck cost me $38,000."  So if you all want to say "$156 million + interest" I'm okay with that, too.

Nederland’s educational system will be excellent whether this massive bond passes or fails.  Whether some choose to believe it or not.

Sure... Are you about to advocate for bringing prayer back into schools?  Or are you just going to say that as a Christian I should be willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES if somebody else can benefit from it?

Because honestly, the 10% I pay in tithes covers my bases.

It's not that simple.  Most people agree that something needs to be done.  What is proposed is by far the most expensive bond issue per capita in the history of SETX.... which is saying a lot, considering that PAISD spends more per student than any other district in the state.
Very few people are opposed to doing anything at all.  But opposition to this monstrous burden doesn't mean that a person is opposed to progess.
Just because I believe in Christmas doesn't mean I have to give my kid Ferrari on 12/25. And refusing to buy that Ferrari doesn't mean that I don't believe in celebrating the birth of my Lord and Savior, either.
The sad fact is that a lot of people in positions of power (elected and otherwise) see how beneficial these bond issues can be personally.... like for the folks in BISD.  If you really think that contractors, designers, ELECTRICIANS, etc, didn't send cash back to the the folks that made that bond issue occur, you're painfully sheltered.  The sad thing is people who are over here honking about wanting the bond who aren't even gonna get a slice of that pie like the others will, lol.

No offense, but one day I'll hear "It'll ONLY cost you $30/month" which is then followed by "nobody really knows what it will cost based on the interest rates at the times at which the bonds are actually issued."
$30 a month is a woeful guess that is intentionally lower than the cost to the typical taxpayer.  It's practically a lie.  The typical home in Nederland is worth substantially more than that... so we'll just use $200,000 and assume a $100/month or $1200 year for the taxes on your home... because as we all know, the homestead exemption is a static amount.  Your exemption saves you the same $$ amount no matter how much your home is worth.  You actually pay more tax on the 2nd $100k than you do on the first $100k.  There's no dispute there.   If you are fortunate(?) enough to have more than just your homestead, the taxes on your "other" (hopefully revenue creating) properties will go up to.  The good news is that you can pass those increased taxes onto your tenants or customers....  Which brings me to my next point.  Every business that operates inside the NISD will see their tax burden increased.  They WILL NOT just bear the additional costs... they WILL pass them onto their consumers.  Every gas station, grocery store, shop, restaurant, etc... will be passing their new tax burden onto the public as well.  The sad thing is that places operate on a profit basis..  If their taxes go up by 2%, not only will they have to recoup the taxes, they're going up even higher than the tax amount because they HAVE to if their net profit is going to stay static.  If the cost of doing business goes up, the profit taking will have to increase to maintain the margins that investors are expecting.
So not only will the average Bulldog pay his own higher property taxes, he'll also be paying those increased taxes for all of the local businesses they shop with, and even paying higher prices above and beyond what the tax liabilty for those businesses will be in order to add profit to the business owners.
I'm not gonna spout off some LIE like "It'll only cost $30 month....."  I'm going to guess that the typical Nederlander will be paying somewhere between 150-200 month if the bond is passed.  You know, $1800-2400 of net dollars that the taxpayer won't get to use for themselves each year.
The loose calculations say that $156 mill is the sticker... with interest over time the actual costs are anticipated to cost in the neighborhood of $225 million.

But I get it... it works a lot better to say "$30/month"

My reference to an unknown interest rate was directed to the question of the total cost on top of 156,000,000. The unknown tax rate/variance will have little effect on the monthly tax increase. Reality is, you bring 156,000,000 worth of construction and 100+ workers at a time to your community, it increases revenue. More restaurant business, hotels, fuel sold for equipment and individuals, local hardware shopping etc.
I feel your projected monthly cost is inflated quite a bit. JMO. I'll try to provide more info to support my opinion when I have more time.

Lol.  How?  By posting some Facebook ads?  We are the absolute KINGS of sticking our American noses into other peoples' elections.  Shoot, we'll even depose your leader if he threatens our oil supply.  Every time we send our troops overseas, you can rest assured that we're "interfering" with somebody's leadership.
At least they weren't here actually voting multiple times. Or here illegally and voting in our elections.  Both of which are openly acknowledged and accepted by one particular party.

I mean, it's just laughable.... The D's proclaim themselves to be the party that every woman should be beholden to because they (The Ds) are all about womens' rights... except everybody pretends that Bill Clinton never happened.  Literally.... the guy who used his position of power to abuse an intern (and then lied to us all about it) is literally sitting in the front row.  His wife (who attacked all of his victims publicly, BTW) was chosen to represent the "obvious choice" that women across America should make in 2016.
Died in the wool party honks (left and right) might forget stuff like that, but the rest of us don't.
As far as well-documented, just hit google. The pics speak for themselves.

It's a lot of things, but it's community wide.
I've seen a lot of kids who really don't have a lot of baseball talent, but their parents still have them taking pitching lessons, playing LL, Fall ball, and select ball.  I can't think of a single kid in the last few years that hit up a football camp.  I take that back... I can think of two.
When a kid with an arm in other places would normally be honing his QB skills, in BC that kid will quit STJFL to pursue baseball (if he was ever even in STJFL). Part of it comes down to losing... I mean, it's hard to sell kids on a sport when the program is so inconsistent.  Or actually, bad more often than decent.
I'll also say this... BC kids as a whole are soft.  They'd rather go spit sunflower seeds and shag grounders than hit the weightroom.  I used to tell my boys after I came home from the lake "yeah... I drove through Newton.  They were out practicing.  What did you do today?  Oh, you slept in, ate doritos, and played COD.... that's why they win."
If you had a kid that was potentially a starter on the football team, would you be content if he quit the sport to focus on baseball... but still hung out on the sidelines on Friday nights in street clothes?  It's completely cool in BC.  I mean, I know you've got a commit to play baseball, but if your gonna quit on the team, stop hanging out on the sidelines.

Not really wanting to beat a dead horse, but my truck is paid for.  Has 200k thousand miles on it now.  I should probably be on the lookout for a replacement.  For some people, that means picking up a used rig with some miles.  For others it means going to the note lot and getting a beater.  Some others might even head down and pick up a new truck.
Just because I say "Whoa, I really don't need that new 2019 King Ranch F350 Crew Cab 4x4 with the dealer installed lift kit, wheels/tires, custom paint and 3 TVs" doesn't mean I'm against replacing my old truck.
I just think $90k is a lot of money for a new truck.  Or $156 million for a bond package in a town of 17,000 is a little crazy.

It's 156 million dollars additional tax dollars that will actually be collected from the citizens and businesses there in Nederland.... A fraction of that revenue will be funneled back into the local economy by wages earned by local workers (assuming that some of them are actually hired to work on the construction) and if any materials/contractors are acquired from Nederland sources.  Otherwise, it's just $156 million being sucked out of the local economy.
The idea that the money will stay in Nederland is laughable at best.  I just don't think Setzer's is gonna be able to fill that order.

Klein is that you?  Since you are quoting verbatim from his page.      No one in Austin is questioning it and they have been transparent on how they arrived at the numbers and what needs to be done.   You need to actually go into the schools and see the situation they are in before coming to conclusions.

I don't think anyone is trying to bamboozle anyone. Most people just budget on a monthly basis. It is easier to explain and understand what $156,000,000 million dollars looks like from a tax impact basis and how it affects a residence or business tax burden if its clearly broken down. No one is out advocating for the bond saying its a $0.038/hr increase on a $100k appraised residence and I don't think anyone has tried to hide the amount of the proposed bond. The proposed projects and their budgeted amounts have been posted here, on social media, in the board minutes, discussed over 6 months at various C.A.C. meetings, a citizen survey completed both online and via phone, etc.
The whole process has been extremely transparent, open to the public (even if you didn't want to be a member), and led by the C.A.C.
    Approximately $27.50 / month for a $100k house. = $330 annually
    Approximately $55 / month for a $200k house. = $660 annually.
    Approximately $82.50 / month for a $300k house. = $990 annually.
    Approximately $110 / month for a $400k house. = $1320 annually.
    Etc.
In regards to the pig comment, the Citizens Advisory Committee (C.A.C.) which was comprised of 80-100 members (both nominated and self-nominated), overwhelmingly supported "new" and not the type of bond passed in 2012.
Additionally, only the high school is proposed to be torn down. The improvements made at the other schools stay in place.

I guess you haven’t priced mid county real estate lately, but you can pretty much double that figure up to 200k. Taxes on commercial property (which is taxed higher) will go up, too. So unless you’re Section 8, your rent is gonna go up, too. But what’s an extra $100 here or there? All of the local businesses that you visit will be passing their increased costs on to you the consumer as well.
I’d say the typical Nederlanderthal can expect his/her actual costs to run a little closer to $1500/year.
The bug man on Spurlock? He’s paying higher taxes on his home, his business property, his business personal property, and all of his work trucks. His costs are for the new bond issue are probably going to be 25x what you’re predicting. The good news is that he can pass a lot of costs on to his customers. So your $50/bug treatment is now a $60 bug treatment. Same for every other local business that you visit.  You will pay more for every margarita, every tank of gasoline, and every grocery that you buy in town.
So $30/month is by no means reflective of the true cost of the bond issue.
