I don’t think I missed a home game during the Tubbs/Foster era. Lord how far we have fallen

Kenneth Perkins was on those 80 to 84 teams as well. Lamar beat Missouri in 1981 and in 1983 smoked Alabama 73-50 before losing by 60-58 to Villanova.
I know there was a story on Olliver. It may have been against Weber State in 1980 where he was standing about 35 feet from the basket by the bench and the opposing coach said don't guard him that far out.  Well he hit one from about 35 feet and the opposing coach was yelling "guard him, guard him". A good many of his shots would have been 3 pointers where he normally shot from. They had Olliver and Clarence Kea on those teams because the Carolinas weren't interested in them.

I don't even know where to start with all this.  In the other topic on the AD search there was a link to an interview with former baseball coach Jim Gilligan.  He, of course will be diplomatic but even he said all the programs are down now.

As far as basketball, under Tubbs and Foster we had 7 consecutive 20 win seasons with 4 NCAA tournament appearance and 3 NIT appearances. Since then we have had 3 seasons with 20 wins in the last 37 years.

I will ramble on some more in another post but my question is why?  Is it athletic directors, coaches, recruiting? Do recruits not like this area or campus? Is it too hard to recruit when you always have a losing program? We have tons of great talent even in our own area and a lot of them don't go the top name  programs.  Why can't we keep any of them around here?

It’s not that I don’t like Lamar, I am totally frustrated by their lousy performance in all major sports. If you look at D1 rankings, they are almost dead last in every major sport and there are almost 400 D1 colleges mentioned. Football did not win a game because the NCAA called the only win a scrimmage, the mens basketball team did not beat one D1 school, the softball team is 8-60 the last year in a quarter, Franklin has a losing record in womens basketball as well as Davis in baseball
Yes I am certainly frustrated and highly disappointed with an athletic program this poor

He had been on leave. He pretty much destroyed every athletic program Lamar had with poor decisions and hires.
Here is hoping we get somebody good to turn our programs around.

I think it is not the name of he school you are playing but the kind of year they are having.  Sure, Lamar beat Rice 2 out of 3 games this year but Rice is 3-10 as of today. Houston Baptist is 6-8 and in the Southland.
All in all we get a lot of fool's gold in these pre-conference games and then when conference rolls around we end up near the bottom of the pack.  That has been the typical scenario since Gilligan has been gone.

I just can't understand why we never can have a decent basketball team.

A lot of us older folks remember the Thalidomide catastrophe.  But as I posted, us ancient ones don’t have a lot to lose.  Close to a durn if you do, durn if you don’t.
My thoughts on the J&J Vaccine - since 6 to 8 women died of blood clots, why didn’t they continue to give it to men?   It confirms a meme I saw recently.
COMMON SENSE IS SO RARE THESE DAYS, IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SUPERPOWER.  😂😄😂

I'm a UH alum and fan of Alvin Brooks.  He is a great person.  I have met him a few times at UH alumni functions.  He was a gentleman.  He had a positive attitude about UH men's basketball when we were a struggling program, fighting to get back to some type of relevance.  He is a man's man.  He will run a clean program, make his kids go to class and get the academic help they might need, and he is not afraid to coach hard.  He will preach defense...on the ball defense...in the passing lanes defense...defense, defense, defense.  If you do not play defense, then you will not play.  He gets it.  Shooting and offense will come and go, but defense and rebounding travels.  If you have an off night, you can still play outstanding defense, rebound, and play with great effort.  If not, then grab some bench.  I was not a fan of Lamar firing Tic Price.  He is another coach that is not afraid to coach a kid hard and hold kids accountable for playing with great effort on both ends of the court.  I like those types of coaches.  Alvin Brooks can recruit.  Big recruiter at UH.  He will find PGs and wing players that can be developed if they "buy-in" to his program...defense, rebounding, and play 100 mph for as long as you can.  Great hire, Lamar.  Go Coach Brooks!  Good luck Coach Brooks.  We will miss you at Houston.  Should Lamar University do you wrong (hope not), come back to Houston!  I look forward to seeing UH and Lamar play in Houston and Beaumont.  Coach Sampson and Coach Brooks, make that call and get the games on the schedule.
    Peace.

Those were  my thoughts exactly.  We would have had a core of a basketball team that was looking pretty good at the end of the year coming back.  While Tic Price was not setting the world on fire I felt he was decent and just a good player or two from making the jump.
Robin Harmony left the women's basketball program two years ago after a 115-66 record; since then the women have been 20-34.
Holly Bruder took a start up women's softball team to the NISC championship game after 5 years.  This year the softball record so far is 2-24.  She was terminated on a claim of religious discrimination.
The soccer team is doing good so maybe that can be destroyed next.

I am not surprised by the new AD decisions at all, everything he has touched has turned to crap . Whats surprising is, the worst athletic program Lamar has had in the last 20 years or so haven't been touched which is Track and Field . Tic Price was at least trying to recruit local talent, and out of 7 seasons only had 2 losing seasons . This new AD is a looser and has come in and is destroying Lamar entire athletic program right before our eyes.
