It all comes down to cash. Long ago (pre children) I decided I was going to make some extra money by refereeing basketball games in the triangle. I attended some meetings, paid dues, bought gear, and got started. I refereed one summer league warm up tournament and quickly decided the headache wasn't worth the measly money they were paying. The parents, players, and coaches were unbelievably hard to deal with, but not as hard to deal with as the other referees. This was set up to be a training ground for new refs, so they paired us with other more experienced officials to help us learn. I was paired up with a guy who was a state trooper for a living, but had carved out a pretty good reputation as an official in SETX. This guy was unbearable. He had no interest in teaching, rather his agenda was for me to realize he was a better official than I would ever be. I have pretty thick skin, but I left that night and made the decision that I would never do that again.
So to summarize, I was going to be paid peanuts to deal with screaming parents, kids, coaches and officials. No thanks. They need to up the pay, and ensure that those who might be interested are not treated as freshmen trying to join a fraternity. It's up to the UIL to figure out the money issue, and TASO to figure out the assimilation issue.

It would be nice if it went back to the top two teams. I hated seeing a 0-10 Scarborough team in the playoffs.

I'd probably adjust your criteria a bit but you are right on. Making the playoffs shouldn't be the benchmark any more. The avg district size is around 6-7 teams. So you finished 4th of 6 and that's success?  Great post. +1

With the UIL allowing three and four teams to go to the playoffs, I was wondering what was considered a great program now.  So I came up with this criteria for a ten year window, tell me what you think.
    1. Exceptional- multiple state championship appearances and at least one title in ten years
2.Great- Semis or better three times
    3. Good- Second round or better in five of ten years
    4. Average- Playoffs in five of ten years
    5. Decent- Playoffs in three or less years
    6. Below- Two or below playoff appearances in ten years

This is not perfect but i am just curious of what will be said

I hope so ,it's not the students per say, they need more qualified teachers for all subjects. During the BISD  turmoil they cut a lot of good teachers. Their are good academic students at Ozen ,my daughter happen to be one of them was one of top students at Odom, and at Ozen as well. I also have two others that graduated and are now working very well paying jobs. My point is, it is not the smart students that are lacking at Ozen it is the lack of more qualified teachers. You can get a quality education at any school ,sometimes it just take more self initiative.

He also recently picked up his 3rd D1 offer to Central Connecticut (coached by Donyell Marshall).  By the way, good advice Dove, and advice that will most assuredly be heeded.  The kid is constantly working his tail off with his game.  And as far as humility, in this day and age where almost every kid tweets about being "blessed" with receiving an offer as soon as they receive one, I don't think Kobe mentioned a word about his most recent one.  Humble to his core.

For those who know me, know that I am very critical of southeast Texas teams and how they perform against elite programs throughout the state. I'm on record for giving WO-S elite status as the only true southeast Texas team with such regard, outside of Katy (geographically). As for Newton, SETX on this site, but I consider East Texas, but that's besides the point.
WO-S will in my opinion probably have a season like no other prior to this year. Last year, I made a statement about the Stangs, in which I said that nobody would play them to within 20 points (after the Jasper game) --- all the way thru state. I was wrong, as Cuero was 13 and Celina was 19.....if I remember correctly. Neverthless, these young guns really showed out the rest of the way.
This year, I will go a step further in that I do not believe anybody will play (starting in District) to within 30 points ---all the way to the state championship game vs. Gilmer (which will be a 10-14 point WO-S victory.

I do agree but I also think there's something else going on here. If you are familiar with Big Brother, this feels awfully a lot like a backdoor.
If I am AD anywhere in the area and specifically a place like Ktz where basketball is premier and I am not calling the shots on the entire coaching staff, we're going to have a problem. Maybe I am missing something.......

Why would this dude who has had major success in the past, and is fresh off of leading a 6A boys program want to sit out a year just to start coaching 3A girls basketball? That's what doesn't make sense to me. He would be a player in any vacant boys job in any area of the state, but he's coaching Kountze GIRLS? Come on man.....

Slight theological error there TVC. Original sin that took place in Genesis 3 brought guilt upon us all, therefore we were all sinful from birth (Psalm 51:5). Did any of you have to teach your children to lie, or hit, or throw fits?  Each of us is born into a state of total depravity (Ephesians 2:1-3), and it takes the intervention of Christ to save us from that state (Ephesians 2:4-10). None of us are sinless creatures, heck some of us lust in our sleep. How are we to control that? The only thing that regenerates the sinful heart (because of original sin) of man is Christ. What we are experiencing in our world today is a direct result of our totally depraved state. Slavery which led to segregation which led to discrimination which led to racism which leads to hate, murder, and more hate and murder. Our only hope is Christ and his intervention in the chaos. As believers, we should spend more time praying for Christ to step into the situation, rather than pointing fingers at one another trying to decide whose life matters more.
So to answer the original question, are we suffering because of our own sin? No. We are suffering because of original sin.

All in all what you just said is that you're scared which is my point. You're scared and nervous when you show up before even knowing the situation and you end up acting accordingly which is exactly what you're trained NOT to do. My wife smarted off because there was another white couple smoking cigarettes on the other side of the garage and he never stopped to mess with them, she never used one profane word but she did bring up their race in which his comment was "well maybe YOU shouldn't be here." Which is when I stood up empty-handed, tired of walking all day and annoyed he was bothering us. No matter how I stood up he was going to interpret like I could beat his ass, which I easily could've in a different setting. No taser, no mace, no radio, just instant fear and hand straight to the weapon.
Thats weak as hell and you're weak as hell too. You're exactly the type guy that doesn't need a badge or gun but exactly the type guy that gets them sometime. I guess that's what makes America great though, we can all believe whatever makes us feel good.

It goes without saying that I was talking about the program as a whole and not the coaches and kids individually. Ozen is in the situation it is in because of the administration. You are obviously too close to the situation to talk objectively about it.

Dumpster fire may be a bit harsh, but the message is clear.
This will be Ozen's 19th season as a varsity football team. This will be their 8th different head coach in those 19 seasons. That's a rate of changing HC's every 2.4 seasons. Ozen had just 2 HC's (Louis & Thomas) the first 7 seasons but will now have 6 different HC's in the last 12 seasons. That is an average of just 2 seasons per coach. That is not going to cut it if you want to be successful.
The administration and coaching situation and what it has done to the football program could very well be described as a "dumpster fire". This is not a reflection of the athletes at Ozen.

And the previous guy started the fire IMO. I still say he knew he wanted to leave way before the actual time he announced that he was. The kids in that football program are the real losers in that situation. Heck they couldn't even do spring ball like they normally do because of it, just 7on7.
