Thanks, I had no idea that most schools have Girls ADs in addition to a Boys AD.

She certainly deserves it, no question about it.  I dont follow volleyball but her name is always mentioned as the Gold Standard of High School Volleyball coaches.

I wouldn’t say most, but there is a lot. Much more common when you get out of our areas.

Just my 0.02 cents.  I'm not being critical of anyone's opinion, but...Barbara Comeaux has earned the right to stay at PN-GISD as Girls AD/Golf Coach for as long as she decides to get out of bed and put on purple and white.  If there was a Mount Rushmore at PN-G, she would be on it.  She is worth every penny that PN-GISD pays her and then some.  She is one of the strongest pillars there is upholding the core values of PN-GISD:  Honor, Pride, and Tradition.

Absolutely! How many AD’s have passed through while she has remained? How many straight years did her volleyball teams make the playoffs? How many state championships? Oh, and she happens to have more career victories than any other volleyball coach in Texas history. She still does a lot more than coach golf. A lot of schools have girl coordinators/AD’s.

Most of what you said is correct. They lost 3 starters (they are all sisters and they moved out of the district), and another broke her hand. What their coach has done this season to keep it together and make the playoffs is nothing short of remarkable.

I agree. I've always thought he has done a very good job. So all three sisters were starters? The girl that broke her hand came off the bench?

  4. From my understanding Buna had three players move (two of them starters), and another starter break her hand. The fact they are still the three seed after losing that much is pretty impressive. According to MaxPreps they beat Silsbee and played Lumberton close when they had their entire team. Those two teams tied for the district championship

    22-4A.

  5. One year I was coaching boys basketball and our freshman team was not very good. We had zero A team players from JH and our second best player had not played since he was seven. However, we played extremely hard. There were two games we played that year and I didn't know if we were going to score before halftime. We had trouble breaking the press, and when we did couldn't make a shot. Never did I expect the other team, at any point in the game, to start playing different. It was our job to break the press and make a shot. It was not their job to stop playing the way that they play. Even when their subs came in, those young men needed to play the same way the starters did.

I've never understood why people expect the other team to just stop playing. I have been a part of volleyball scores 25-1, 25-2 (both sides of this score), and no one ever expected the volleyball team that was winning to stop attacking the ball. No one expected them to just start sending free balls to give the other team a chance. You have to perfect what you do and Coach Fogo is preparing his girls to play four quarters. If he pulled his starters and stalled once his girls were up big they would only play 1-2 quarters nearly every game. You can't get in game shape that way and that will possibly come back and hurt him in the playoffs when the girls have to play a hard four quarters.

I don't see any problem with teams winning big as long as there isn't showboating and gloating going on. As long as they are playing hard, coached hard, and trying to perfect their game I'm okay with it. I coached HF's current girls basketball coach in volleyball and track. She was a very good player and is a very good coach. I promise you she isn't upset about the score. She wants her girls to get better every second and face tough competition. That's why she scheduled HJ in a non-district match-up as well :)

Anyway...just my thoughts since I have been around both of these coaches for 15 years.

Stephenville outrushed PNG 238-131. Zac Hunter was leading rusher with 128 yards. Bo Wortham was held to 89.

Not about being a homer, but a ten point loss is not getting ripped. They were ripped by Crosby and Texas City this year. 1999 was my first year working at KBMT and I helped cover the game. I graduated in 98.

How many carries did Wortham have?

  7. I would say 28-18 would constitute as not getting ripped. If I remember right it was 28-12 when PN-G scored. Went for 2 but did not convert. Could have been a one score game. I worked with a guy that was on the offensive line for that PNG team and he said they felt like they were running the ball very well and had they stuck to the run they would have probably won. Maybe Ashly has some running stats from that game.

I'm surprised that's all Kendall had on the ground. I felt like he ran for 200 yards.

I’ve been to many games where everything else you mentioned was on a high level, except attendance. Would that equate to lots of atmosphere?

and based on what you’re saying, you really should go to a Memorial/BU game. Because this is the perfect example of what I just stated.  Bands, drill teams, cheer leading, post game shinnanigans.

Another topic, I do hold firm on my belief that ‘atmosphere’ does not win or lose ball games...

Personally I do think attendance matters. A true rivalry shuts cities down and everyone is there. It’s not a question if you are going to the game, it’s assumed you are. Of course there are only so many seats. I’ve been to games that had everything that I said, shoot I have coached in volleyball games where the players couldn’t hear you five feet away even if you screamed what you wanted to tell them. I know a lot of basketball games in our area get that intense. But, for me, for it to be rivalry...this has to be the atmosphere every year.

One year I’ll have to check out that game. I imagine it’s pretty intense. Two biggest cities in our area facing off.

First, we need to define ‘atmosphere’ in this context...

My thoughts on atmosphere would be everything. The number of fans, the intensity on the field, the bands and drill team in the stands, the thickness in the air, etc. A true rivalry atmosphere doesn’t begin the day of the game. It’s looked at and marked the day a schedule comes out. The atmosphere begins to build then. Each week leading up do it the excitement and nerves get larger. Finally, when that game before is over everything immediately changes in those two school districts. I’ve been to several rivalry games and I’m not sure if anything compares to PNG and Nederland. I haven’t been to all of them so I’m not 100% sure. There is just something different about that game.

    Is this accurate?

I don't know, but I like that decision if true. Randy and Regina have been the heartbeat of that school for years. EXTREMELY successful in the sports they coach and the girls program is successful. The road they have been taking seems to lead to a new AD  every few years, and that is not going to work. Why not try something new? The only reason AD is attached to HFC is for money. Someone can be a great HFC, but that doesn't mean they will be a great AD. Someone could also be a subpar HFC but great AD. It's not easy to find someone that's good at both. School systems are stuck marrying those two things and it doesn't always work. It's pretty difficult when new leadership, new vision, and new beliefs come in every 2-3 years. You have to have consistency.

Now why in the world would the district coaches not vote for those HF kids?

I have sat in All-District meetings for volleyball for 14 years. I also always talk to our basketball coaches about how their meeting goes after it happens. I have never seen a coach vote for themself or their players. In any meeting I’ve been in or heard of, you aren’t allowed to. The voting is anonymous, but you know who is voting for who. It’s not hard to figure out. I’m an advocate of the voting not being anonymous. So, if a coach truly did vote for himself that’s a shame.

I don’t coach in this district and only saw HJ (and HF for one half) play this year. Unfortunately, the picks can show the lack of respect towards a coach sometimes. Those of you upset with HF’s picks (I’m not a hater...I worked there for 10 years), I would say several coaches may question the legality of some of those players. I don’t know where they live, did live, etc. and I’m really not concerned about it, but maybe the legality of some of those kids hurt HF in voting. I don’t even know if the ones who made all-district and ones who moved in are the same kids.

I think the HF did a good job. I didn’t necessarily agree with his stall tactics against College Station, but he didn’t ask me either, lol. He did a very good job and there is no arguing that. Just my thoughts on the picks.

I hate that they did it, but I wonder how many other teams are doing something like this? It can't be just us. I hope the league comes down hard on anybody they find doing it in the future

I don't think this is anywhere close to just the Astros. I think it may be a problem bigger than MLB knows at the moments. I'm thinking the fact this may be more wide spread than two teams is what kept Luhnow from being banned for life. I know a lot of sports writers thought that was coming.

I have been Astros fan since for 30 years; since I discovered baseball and I agree with how hard MLB came down on the Astros and the firing of Hinch and Luhnow. This organization was under your control and you allowed cheating to take place. That's 100% unacceptable and whether you win or lose you need to do things the right way. However, I don't think there is truth to stripping them of the WS Title. You would have to strip so many WS Title's through the years if you did that.

I think they need to try and hire Craig Biggio (don't know if he would be interested). Give the fans a familiar name and face and someone they feel like they can trust.

  14. I can't imagine 4 teams ever being changed. Once UIL has went there, I can't imagine one being taken away. The problem I see with taking 4 teams is breaking into two different classifications for 2A-4A. The numbers seem to support the idea of two divisions and four teams making the playoffs much better in 5A and 6A. These are the percentages currently making the playoffs right now in 2A-4A:

    2A D1: 68% of teams

    2A D2: 71% of teams

    3A D1: 60% of teams

    3A D2: 61% of teams

    4A D1: 70% of teams

    4A D2: 71% of teams

Some Regions have nearly 75% of teams making the playoffs. We will always see some 4 seeds beating 1 seeds because upsets happen and some districts are much stronger and deeper than others. I'm not 100% how it works, but Louisiana does some type of Power Ranking to seed the playoffs. Texas is way too big to do that across the state, but you could do that per Region. I'm sure for some districts the 5th place team may be better than a 3rd or 4th place team in the playoffs from another district. Since such a high percentage of teams are getting in why not seed each Region from #1-#16 and play it that way. That will also keep the possibility of two of the top teams meeting so early.

I would like to see the end of such small districts when allowing four teams in, but I don't see how they can do that when there are only so many teams in a classification trying to fill 16 playoff spots per Region for 4 Regions.
