  1. I contacted five state championship coaches one year when volleyball season and asked if I could meet with. I told them I would come to them and pay them for their time, but I just wanted to talk about the game and see what they were doing different than our area. One coach had just won her third in a row. The first thing she said to me was, “Coach…you are only as good as your athletes.”

During our conversation the name Ryan Mitchell came up and how good of a job he was doing. She told me he was her assistant and would talk about how terrible some coaches her. She would tell him, “Ryan…that coach could be really good but you are only as good as your players.” He took a job a school and left after two or three years because he was getting his butt kicked. Humbled, he went back to being her assistant for a year or two. He then left and started the volleyball program at Lucas Lovejoy…he won five straight state championships, including moving from 4A to 5A during that five year span.

Just an example how most coaches think…we are only as good as our athletes, but it is our job to maximize their talents to the best of their abilities. I also think this debate is probably as pointless as trying to change a Democratic to Republican or Republican to Democrat. You aren’t going to change anyone’s mind on how they feel.

  2. Perhaps they didn't want to pass up on a proven coach at the high school level. Just because you have been in the college ranks doesn't mean anything. In college you get to recruit your players...you have what you have in high school. I'm not saying the individual you are speaking of (I have no idea who the person is) would or would not be successful at the high school level. But, they had the opportunity to hire someone that is a proven coach at the high school level and that's what they plan on doing. It will be interesting to see who lands at Buna.

The unnamed team was Southwest Prep out of Ontario, Canada.  Very solid team filled with several D1 players.  All of them were about 6'0 with a 6'3' post.  We played well, just ran out of gas and lost a close one....

The whole rankings thing is fun for observers....   Final rankings are the one that matters!  That will settle in 2 weeks.  Right now the Lady Hawks want to beat Navasota.  Nothing more, nothing less.

This. Hope they finish with a #1 next their name this time around.

But realistically, shouldn’t there be a time limit?  I would give more that three years. My limit would probably be 7 years.  If you can’t win a State Title in that amount of time, does one honestly think another 7 years will be any different?

Are you saying that if a coach doesn't win a state title in 7 years then that coach and the school district should part ways?

    PNG CAREER PASSING YARDAGE -PNGINDIANS.COM

    1. R. Johnson-2016-2018- 7,710.  30-8 record   2-1 vs. Nederland

    2. A. Morse-2013-2015- 6,298.   23-11 record  0-3 vs. Nederland

    3. D. Long-1997-1998- 6,173       30-7 record   2-1 vs. Nederland

    4. B. Doty-2009-2010- 4,708      19-6 record   1-1  vs. Nederland

    5 .B. Bost-2018-2020- 4,592      12-10 record  2-0 vs. Nederland

    MOST CAREER TD PASSES

    1. R. Johnson- 85

    2. A. Morse- 70

    3. D. Long- 56

    4. B. Bost- 44

    5. B. Doty- 43

No doubt all 5 guys were very good, including Morse. IMO after seeing all play, I would have a hard time not saying D. Long was the best PNG QB. Long probably would have had 10,000 yards passing & 100 TD'S in Faircloth offensive schemes😁. Long had solid college years at A&M\Sam Houston. Morse is putting up great stats at Henderson State. Doty went to Oregon but then decided to play basketball @ Lamar, Johnson is a rb at UT & Bost is #2 QB @ A&M.

I would love to see Dustin Long playing in offensive schemes of today. I don’t think he ever even took a snap other than under center.

Looks like all the WB’s on this had great careers.

  6. It has the potential to be a great match. Match within the match is Huffman is young and should have continued to improve all year (including since the last time they faced BC) vs Bridge City returns a lot from last year and is experienced. Winning is a habit and one team is used to winning at this level...the other is taking another shot at knocking this door down (I don’t believe they have went past the third round since 2007 or so). It should be very fun and entertaining for all! I have friends on both staffs and hate that someone is going to go home. Hopefully, both teams play excellent. Good luck to all!!!

The State Championship in 3A will be played next Week. When East Bernard Plays Hardin. I will take East Bernard for the win. Yep I have no dog in that fight, but I have seen them both play.

Very unfortunate they have to meet in the 3rd round. I wish they would rank each Region 1-64 (the best they can) and play it that way.

Orangefield at 530 is going to be close. Think the cutoff was 514 last time.

3A/4A cutoff is going to be very interesting. Right now there are seven schools between 530 and 536. Only two in the 520's. My guess is the cutoff will be 525, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a little higher or a little lower. Possible it could stay at 515. I don't know how often the number has stayed the same between alignments. It's going to be a very interesting.
