  2. Last few paragraphs from Beaumont Enterprise article on tonight's game. Thought this was good: Jaystan Davis was proud to represent Hardin-Jefferson and be coached by his father. “It was special moment for sure,” Jaystan Davis said. “It’s been a good three years playing for him and we have had had our ups and downs, struggles and success. I have become so much mentally stronger as a player and being a coach’s kid. I have learned how to work well with others and be a great teammate. I’ll take that with me when I graduate and enter the real world.” While Clay Davis was hugging his son, he exchanged words with a Yates fan in the crowd where he became emotional and told the crowd that he was hugging his son. Hardin-Jefferson never led in the game. Yates’ up-tempo offense and press defense cause problems for the Hawks. Austin Samaya led the Hawks with 20 points. Preparing for the No. 1 team in Class 4A can be challenging. “Probably have to go recruit some players,” said Clay Davis on preparing for Yates. “Unfortunately, the system is a little broken right now. There is holes in the system and they choose to take advantage of them. It is what it is, and it’s hard to prepare for. We will take the kids we have in our system that come up in our system. I wouldn’t trade any of our kids for anyone else.” The Lions scored 100 points in their 20th straight game. Yates senior guard Rubin Jones knocked down the 3-pointer with 2:58 left in the fourth quarter that lifted the team over the 100-point mark as the crowd from Yates cheered on the Lions. As the season comes to an end for the Hawks, its five seniors made a name for themselves within the program. “The legacy that they will leave is that they represented Hardin-Jefferson basketball the way it should be represented. I’m so proud,” Clay Davis said. “Those are our kids, Hardin-Jefferson kids from Day 1. We don’t go out and recruit our players. The kids that we put on the floor are Hardin-Jefferson kids from our program.” I think Coach Davis says it all. Kudos to him and his team.

  4. HJ played good defense against a great team and almost stopped the 100 point streak. That would have been a great moral victory. But to go on about recruiting after the loss is sour grapes. They played the Lions tough last year and not a peep about it. If you're so sure about this, go file a complaint with the UIL, which frowns on this. The reporter should have pushed back on this comment. Where is your evidence? Otherwise, he's just letting the coach libel another coach. Bad job, Beaumont Enterprise. When there were veterans in the editor desks, this would have never happened. HJ could have avoided this by hanging on last Friday. They lost to the better team and there's no shame in that. This was an opportunity to teach his kids sometimes your best isn't good enough but that it's no reason to be ashamed because they laid it all on the line. Clay Davis is wrong.

I think he suggested you study the Koran and come to your own conclusion. Would that not be preferable to just making statements that are possibly incorrect? What relevance to his suggestion does his status as a Koran scholar have?

  10. H.J best player transferred from BU...Clay full of himself...He is running an AAU program at his high school that funnels player to H.J...Nobody and I mean nobody should feel sorry for Clay...When you got the UIL in your back pocket there is no need to worry about anything...

  12. HISD Athletic Director denied the transfers, Yates had to file an appeal with UIL. HISD has been working behind closed doors to sell the property that Yates is on to The University of Houston. HISD doesn’t care for Yates, they prefer Bellaire, Lamar and The Heights. The transfers those schools get justify my statement. HISD ran the clock in the second half of Yates Games in an attempt to stop them from reaching their record 100 point streak.

  13. How many players over the last 5 years were from Beaumont that played for H.J and Silsbee...Silsbee would not have any championships if the "MOVE IN's stayed in Beaumont but that's not my business...

  14. 4 of the 5 transfers to Yates this year are seniors. If that's not a red flag, what is? I know schools get transfers. But when you get 3,4,5 a year and they are one sport players (not just students) and seniors to boot, that's suspicious.

  15. Wouldn't nobody here be apologizing for these squads if their teams were the ones that had to deal with it. Hypothetical Super team - 150 Beaumont United - 40 If that something like that happened every year, you know good and well feelings would change. I applaud Coach Davis for speaking the truth after the game.

  16. Salty or simply the truth? Does ANYONE deny that Yates recruits? This isn’t college basketball, it’s high school. The idea is to take the kids in your town and play against the kids in the next town to see who is better. The next level, college, is where you get the best talent from said schools and put them on the same team and then compete. Yates is basically a small college/JUCO team.

  17. Good solution. Everyone should conduct themselves in the same manner. I find your remark about people crying on this board to be very interesting. Is it your opinion that those who disagree or find fault in something should not be expressing themselves? Why is it that I am going to guess that you are considerably less steadfast in your beliefs when it comes to other facets of life?

  18. I guess some can’t take a loss. You cry about the system that allows you to do the same thing . Quit getting on this board crying about kids transferring when it happens everywhere . Some get better players some don’t and when it doesn’t work to your advantage your crying a river . The entire UIL is made it up of well you guessed it . So how does that happen or are the kids there legit . All a coach can do is prepare his/her team to play. Your job isn’t to worry about what the other team has going on but to give your kids the confidence to play the game at a high level. Oh and kids have to get better period !!!!!!

  20. Mr. Advocate: Are those "salty" words untrue?

  21. Wow. Lemme find that article. Playing devils advocate, looking at it from Yates' end, Coach Davis' words can come off as a little 'salty' after a loss.

  22. The " discussion" to which you refer involved some Yates fans mocking the coach embracing his senior son who fouled out of his last game. Very long journey for young man whose life was in doubt when he was born.

  31. A lot of those kids have ties to yates .. great grandparents, grandparents , or parents went there ..yates is a very old school ...with yates basketball ur argument goes both ways ... they lose kids to the ft bend schools which are always exceptional in basketball , they lose kids to Prep and private schools ... this balances out.. yates does not have to recruit any players ...players already want to go there ..

  40. Well, UIL has things in place to prove if true recruiting is going on. They also have ways that you can easily blow the whistle if you see it. Remember, it wasn't long ago that one of the coaches for Nederland blew the whistle for Central's 7' African kid. 🤷🏾‍♂️
