Idaho plays in the Kibbie Dome and they are in process of expanding the stadium 20K.  Lamar could add bleachers to the south end pretty cheaply to raise capacity to 20K.  Texas State is also about to expand their stadium to ultimately 30K+.  Lamar will definitely need to expand the stadium within 5 years if they join the WAC.

A 50,000 seat stadium is not impressive when there are only 11,000 fans in it...I would prefer a stadium we could actually fill to at least 75% on a week to week basis....30,000 to 32,000 at the most, and that's being extremely optimistic, until we see if the fan support is there long term.  My fear is that we had alot of "curious fans" this year and that half of those won't come back next season...I hope not but this is SE Texas and our support of anything other than high school football has been spotty at best....Hoping for the best though....

While standing in line to get season tickets last February, Dr. Simmons was walking around making small talk with a lot of the fans in line. A buddy of mine I was standing in line with, stopped and talk to Dr.Simmons. They got on the subject of expanding the football stadium. I heard Dr. Simmons say that if they expanded the stadium, they would enclose the north ends around to the Montagne Center and put a upper deck on the east side to bring the capacity to 30,000 to 35,000.

I hope we would be able to fill it up!

I know we Had a lot of curious fans but I think we won over most of those curious fans and will bring them back next year.

110% agree with this post. If you made it to a home Lamar game and the pregame atmosphere along with the kid's zone at the Montagne Center the vast majority of "curious" fans will come back.

Boise st  33,500
Fresno 41,000
Idaho  16,000
La Tech 30,000
Hawaii  50,000

New Mwxico 30,000
SJSU   30,500

Lamar could add 13,000 and be in the pack. I preferr LU go 40,000.

now list the avg. attendance for those skools remaining in the WAC

I'd rather LU be a very hard ticket to get than a half full 30k seater

Puddin, you'd need to have athletic facilities that compare to others in the same conference. Lamar has great football facilities compared to other SLC schools but not with the WAC or even the Sun Belt.

I doubt Lamar would double the size of the stadium all at once, it would be done in phases.  First enclose the north end, then the south end, then probably a big press box with suites on the west side, then finally an upper deck on the east side.  They could do this over a ten period as the attendance grows.

I still say being in the WAC will allow Lamar to attract better home games than if they stayed in the SLC.  No FBS teams will come to Beaumont if Lamar stays in the SLC, not even Sun Belt teams.  So just being in the WAC allows a better non-conference schedule, and they could still schedule McNeese if they wanted to.

Which of these conference home schedules would draw more fans?

Typical SLC home slate: Nicholls State, SFA, McNeese, SLU
Typical WAC home slate: Utah State, SJSU, UTSA, La Tech

One other thing, would Lamar have a good crowd for a Thursday night ESPN game?

The only competition in the area on a Thurs night is Fresh/JV football games. Thursday ESPN game would definitely sell out.

I still say once LU go FBS, Lamar should go after a home game in Reliant with Texas or AM.

I've got friends at TX State and they say it's always pretty full in the first half.. Second half the students tend to leave for "extra-curriculars" ;)

C'mon now, UNLV--how far back did you have to go to find that, and what were the circumstances of the game?  Apples to apples, bud
I do believe that was this year.

I've got a friend in the athletic department at Texas State and they are trying like heck to get the students out for all of the athletic programs. It isn't just about football as for the size of their student body they have poor attendance for all athletic programs.
I don't understand why some schools struggle with it. Bigger schools, most students can't even get tickets to some events. Schools like LU, TX State, etc... Free tickets just isn't enough. But, when big name programs come to town, like Texas Tech a few years ago.. It was basically sold out. Moving into the WAC will make a big difference.

It was 2009:
vs Northwestern      2134
vs Central Arkansas  2817

Who knows what the weather was but the Northwestern was on Halloween and we are well aware of the coaching changes they've made since.
