namen5 Posted February 5, 2008 Report Share Posted February 5, 2008 It was a well played game that got kind of rough towards the end. I think LCM had 2 yellows and PNG had 3.To score their goal, PNG did a great job of capitalizing when LCM's defenders made a bad play. LCM had a beautiful run from half field to tie it up. KFDM COOP Posted February 5, 2008 Report Share Posted February 5, 2008 LC-M topples PN-G with 2-1 shootout victory HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER The Port Arthur News LITTLE CYPRESS -- Seth Arteaga converted the final attempt to untie a 35-yard shootout and lift Little Cypress-Mauriceville over Port Neches-Groves 2-1 on Tuesday night at Bear Stadium. A terrific airborne save by LC-M keeper Ethan McKay robbed Indians' junior midfielder Justice Lloyd of scoring the game-winning goal with 50 seconds left in the second 10-minute overtime. That save allowed the teams to remain in a 1-1 deadlock followed 80 regulation minutes and 20 overtime minutes. It also led to a 35-yard shootout. LC-M opened the scoring in the shootout when its second shooter Scott Karasik scored. PN-G's Tanner Worley immediately answered with a shootout-tying goal. PN-G owned a 1-0 halftime lead with 18 minutes gone in the game as freshman Nick Guidry scored after taking an assist from Worley. The Bears answered with 13 minutes left in regulation as LC-M's Jon Lopez knocked in a rebound goal after a shot deflected off the hands of Indians keeper Steven Baque. LC-M held an 11-9 edge in shots on goal. "It was a defensive struggle for both teams," Indians coach Don Sandell said. "It was two heavyweights going at it. I thought both teams played equally well." The Indians (6-2-2 and 4-1-1) are knotted in a three-way tie for third place in 20-4A with LC-M and Nederland at 13 points each. soccer.tx Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Share Posted February 6, 2008 KOGT & The Orange Leader The LCM Bears boys' soccer team regained their winning ways with a victory over PNG Indians Tuesday Night at Battlin' Bears Stadium. The Bears won the shoot-out 2-1 following a 1-1 tie after regulation and two overtime periods. The highly contested game demonstrated each team's strong desire to win. The Bears started the game slowly. The Indians took advantage of a Bears' defensive breakdown by scoring 25 minutes into the first half. The Indians enjoyed the one goal advantage at the half's conclusion. Hoping to inspire his team, Head Coach Matt Wedel changed several player's positions to start the second half. "I wanted to shake things up to help the offense", said Coach Wedel. The strategy worked as the Bears' play surged in the second half. Senior Jon Lopez scored the Bears lone goal off a rebounded shot with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Even though the Bears continued a strong offensive attack, they were unable to score again as the second half concluded. The Bears strong play was evident during the two scoreless overtime periods. The Bears' play during the overtime periods "was dominating", according to Coach Wedel. Senior goalie Ethan McKay made several acrobatic saves. Senior Jared Fall lead the Bears' defensive efforts. "Jared played a very good game for us. He has a real good nose for the ball," observed Wedel. The performance in the shoot-out brought the victory to an exhausted Bears team. McKay shined by smothering 4 out of 5 of PNG's attempts on goal during the shoot-out. Sophomore Scott Karasik continued his shoot-out success by scoring on his shot. With the shoot-out tied at 1-1 and the Indians without any remaining kicks, junior Seth Arteaga lined up to kick the Bears last shot. Arteaga described the situation as being "pretty intense. I knew that I had to come through." Arteaga was up to the task, as he drew the Indians' keeper to him and then drilled his shot down the middle of the goal. A relieved and tired Arteaga revealed that he was feeling under the weather during the past two days. But neither sickness nor the Indians goalie could stop the clutch, game winning kick. Wedel reflected on the game. "The whole team played well tonight." But, the tense game left Wedel tired of the stressful shoot-outs. "We have to start winning before the shoot-outs", an exasperated Wedel explained. The home crowd and team probably shared Wedel's sentiments. The hard-fought battle, however, made for a satisfying evening. The victory moved the Bears record to 3-1-2 with 13 district points. The Bears travel to Silsbee for another district game on Friday. The Facts Posted February 6, 2008 Report Share Posted February 6, 2008 The post of the second news article was quite exaggerated, but I guess that's what they're supposed to do right? You can say whatever you want, but the facts are the facts. LCM and PNG both had 2 yellows while the fans were not "escorted out of the game" but told to leave by the referee. Either that or the game was ended on the spot because some student said he was "terrible". I thought it was kind of funny, he made about a section of 15 kids leave. As for LCM's goal, it was the only one while really no other close calls whereas PNG had a few which the goalie made spectacular saves. All in all LCM's second half of district will be pretty hard considering the close calls they have managed to win. Good game to both PNG and LCM. And what starting players were missing? I'm just curious cause PN-G sounds like it still held it's own, so that should make the next game just as good if not better.
