Despite the predictions of my Carthage brethren, I expect a tightly contested game on Friday.  I believe this Carthage team is good, but they have shown some lapses on defense from time to time.  WOS will have a very competitive and athletic team.  I think the Dawgs take it, but I won't be surprised by a close game.

From BE sports editor Matt Faye:

Traditional powers West Orange-Stark and Newton have their swagger back. Column on both programs returning to the state title game. And why Hiawatha Hickman might deserve an apology from Mustang fans.

Then why don't they opt up to 4A DI? They have that option.

If you opt up, you have to opt up in all sports. That wouldn't be fair to the other sports. Plus, Carthage is D2 for a reason. Keep in mind, they won D1 their last year that AND they beat Kilgore earlier in the year.

He was VERY respectful to WOS and raved about the RB. Were you really expecting them to pick WO-S?

You don't have to opt up for all sports.

Bridge City, Hardin-Jefferson and Liberty opted up to play 4A DI in football. All other sports were in normal 4A districts and did not have to play DI in the playoffs.

In bold: that's been all year long especially for that RB, he is a beast along with that OL.

I disagree.  Surratt, Preston, and staff will have a game plan totally focused on what WOS does.  Ninety percent of WOS offense is one guy running the ball.  Carthage has at least one running back that is clearly superior to Jefferson but Surratt will always have a balanced attack.   This will be very lopsided.

Just going by the rule book.

  • Section 350(a): This section mandates that the UIL establish conferences for "League contests" and assign member schools to districts. Because a school is assigned to a conference as a single entity, that assignment applies to all activities governed by that conference's district structure.

That's for classifications, not divisions.

I know of several schools that played DI football but played DII basketball and baseball in the playoffs. It was determined by what schools qualified for playoffs.

Barbers Hill and Port Arthur Memorial all play 5A DI football. Both played in the 5A DII basketball playoffs. Beaumont West Brook and Beaumont United were the DI representatives in basketball out of that district.

Heck, there were even some cases where a school played DII football but ended up playing DI in basketball playoffs.

Y’all can both it to bed before the game even starts..no matter the outcome he’s already surpassed expectations and that means he’s not going anywhere so no point in discussing it..

Oh I'm not letting it go.  I remember the posts on this very site.. and social media.. etc.  following not only his hire but after the first handful of games.  It will not be forgotten.  I may be old, but my memory's still pretty sharp.  And I won't forget.

Anything can happen in these games.  WOS isn't here by accident.  Punch'em in the mouth and see what happens.

Best of Luck, Mustangs.

I never said you were wrong, I just pointed out where I got the info. Thanks for the clarification.

They were calling to get rid of him in Week 10 of this year.

What a wonderful tribute to a great leader of young men of which I was once one. Great coach and even better person who left an undeniable legacy on the field, at the school and in the hearts of those under his leadership.

If that bothers anyone here then I think they might need a character check.

Wrong... you do NOT have to opt up in all sports.
