    Yep.
My property taxes went down $500 a month!!
My annual vehicle registration is now $600 a year, my gasoline costs $250 more per month and my grocery bill after the new sales tax is costing me $400 more monthly….. but I am saving $500 a month on property tax!

I have said that for years in another forum and maybe a time or two in this one.
An across-the-board consumption tax is a terrible idea for people living paycheck to paycheck and an awesome idea for people who make anything at all more than what they need.

Yeah, I follow your attempt at logic.
The 13, 14 and 15 amendments were about slavery.
Millions of people immigrated to this country as a beacon of freedom as in the mass of immigrants at Ellis Island and other immigrant processing locations.  They were not citizens when they arrived and would have come anyway for a chance at prosperity.
Are you suggesting that the world trying to beat a path to America was because their future children might have citizenship?
Finally and most importantly, Article I of the Constitution give only Congress the complete authority to regulate immigration and naturalization (citizenship). There was no need for an amendment for birthright citizenship. They could have simply given citizenship to anyone at any time by legislation. They didn’t need the 13 Amendment.
By making it an amendment, it could not be taken away from former slaves by future legislation. If the 13 Amendment never existed, Congress could still grant citizenship to anyone it wishes. There was never a need to an amendment to grant citizenship to anyone.
The 13, like the 14 and 15, was about correcting the wrongs of slavery, not an incentive to try and lure people to this country…. while people were beating on the door to get in.

I believe that is revisionist history.
The 13th, 14th and 15th amendments were all passed within 4 years after the Civil War with the intent to grant the freedom from slavery, citizenship and the right to vote for former slaves.
I don’t think they randomly and right in the middle of the amendments, tossed in a citizenship right to unknown people who weren’t here yet. In fact immigration and the fleeing to the US was done without any guarantee of citizenship.
Those three amendments were about righting the wrongs from slavery, not luring people to America.

I forgot to mention, in the ruling written by Chief Justice Roberts, he said, “The taxpayer must render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, but no more”.
That might be one of the great quotes from a Supreme Court decision for all time.

All Trump has to do is change the Fourteenth Amendment.
As the Navy Captain said in the movie G I Jane while talking to a senator who was complaining about people taking photos from a public highway….. he would gladly stop them from taking photos… if she could just, “Trim a little fat off the Constitution”.
I think that birthright citizenship is wrong, but….. it’s in the Constitution.
I don’t think the way it has developed is likely the way it was intended but….. it’s in the Constitution.

Probably the saddest day of my career was when we pulled up two drowned Vietnamese children (maybe 3 and 5 years old) on Pleasure Island where one was in distress and the older one went to help. When found several hours later, they were holding on to each other.

The best part of the case might be Chuck Schumer calling this a MAGA decision.
The ruling was 9-0. Kagan, Sotomayor and Brown all sided with the claimed conservatives.
Alito wrote the opinion however Kavanaugh wrote a concurring opinion and the three very liberal women signed off on that also.
Is there really any doubt that no matter what is said by or appears to be supported by the Republicans, conservatives, Trump or anything else from that side of the aisle, is automatically racist, MAGA, white supremacy or their other automated responses?
It is like spinning the wheel to see what the official response is going to be.
Let’s see, today DeSantis said blah blah. Our official Democrat response is…. (Wheel spins and lands on): Transphobic!
Is there anyone that doesn’t see Sotomayor, Kagan and Brown as very liberal? Yet when they agree with the conservative side, it is ignored as if they didn’t exist. Nope, it was a MAGA decision!

Also a possibility from this case….
This might have huge implications on future federal agencies’ authority including in the Second Amendment cases.
With what appears to be a possible showdown between the ATF’s making rules authority and another case pending on the Chevron deference rule, this case might pave the way to keep federal agencies from going outside of ambiguous laws.

Bill Burr has part of one of his comedy routines about the disparity in pay. It is typical Bill Burr profanity laced but it is (like most comedy) completely accurate.
Part of his routine was, women failed women’s sports because women don’t watch it but blame men for not watching it. Meanwhile women are watching the Kardashians and the Housewife shows who are making money hand over fist and it’s raining money. Women would rather watch other women tearing each other down than watching women coming together as a team to try and achieve a common goal, with his conclusion…… “The Money Listens”
Bill Burr Woman Failed the WNBA on YouTube if someone wants to watch it.

Have seen and loved that bit.  He’s absolutely right.  And brings up a more important issue than sold out arenas.  Television eyes.  Until women start watching women’s sports with the same frequency as BRAVO TV, the ladies aren’t getting a big ESPN, TNT or whomever deal.  That’s, of course, why these men are making $40M a year.  It’s not because the owner’s just value them more.

Brittney Griner’s official return to the floor baffles her head coach because it was not a sellout.
I didn’t bring this up about Griner. My point is that the WNBA loses millions of dollars a year as it is not popular.  It only as a subsidiary of the NBA. If it was a regular business or even a professional sports league that lost millions each year, it would have long since folded. It is about the equivalent of a high school JV football team. At least JV has a purpose.
Griner who is obviously a star in the WNBA regardless of her political stance…. but, her coach apparently believed that because she was arrested and in Russia, fans would pack the arena to see her “return”.
Part of the coach’s after game comment was, “How was it not a sellout?”. (In the link posted below)
That is the out of touch part. I am thinking….. go woke, go broke.
The WNBA isn’t losing money because of any agenda. It is losing millions of dollars because it just is not exciting to 99.5% of the public. It is probably subsidized by the NBA just to say there is a women’s league. With that knowledge, the coach thought there should have been an outpouring of support for Griner however.
    Uhhhhh…….. no.

tvc184 got a reaction from LumRaiderFan in Law Trivia and Discussions
There are two word combinations in law that are huge. Maybe huge would be an understatement. Those combinations are and/or and may/shall. It is not just in law-enforcement but for law in general.
Mostly to your question is may/shall. Most law enforcement/police actions fall under “may” which means optional or discretionary. A very limited few say “shall” which is translated as mandatory.
An example is making an arrest without a warrant. There is a whole list of justifications for arresting a person without a warrant under Texas law such as “may arrest” for any crime witnessed. They “may arrest” for family (domestic) violence even if they did not witness it. They “may arrest” for a felony even if they did not witness it and it is in immediate/fresh pursuit. They “may arrest” a person, interfering with another person trying to make an emergency phone call even if they did not witness it.
If a child is missing or a runaway, the officer shall immediately make a report and immediately enter the person into the national FBI computer database or NCIC.
If an adult is missing and endangered, the police shall make a report and enter the person into the same NCIC computer data base, within two hours. Not only is there no option that the police “may” wait for a person to be missing for 24 hours before they make a report, the law  is mandatory that a missing person must be entered into the computer within those two hours. If an officer says that a person has to be missing for 24 hours before they make a report, that is a violation of the law and the officer can be held responsible and sued.
There are extremely recent mandatory actions by the police, most likely prompted by the George Floyd incident. I believe one is to render aid to any person who may be injured during an arrest or use of force by the police. The other is to step in and intervened if they witnessed another officer committing a violation of a person’s rights.
    If you want to cut it short and without explanation, out of hundreds of pages of laws and thousands of laws or requirements, the police SHALL;
Shall make a report of a 1. claimed assault, 2. a possible domestic violence or 3. identity theft.
    Shall document traffic stops.
Shall make an arrest for the violation of a Protective Order, witnessed by the officer.
Shall make a police report and enter a child into the national database immediately and if an adult, within two hours.
Shall render aid for any action taken by an officer and Shall, intervener if another officer is witnessed violating a person’s rights.
Edit for auto correct gibberish. Like it changed a person’s rights to the price is right…
and other words that didn’t make sense.

Looking thru the pictures. I realize I knew him better than I thought. That old red Fairlane (I think) that he always talked about racing and going to the pig stand. He was so proud of his marine/priest son and the grandkids. After only 3 dates, 55 years with his wife... WOW!!! He told me he told her he'd see her 5 months. Just couldn't wait any longer. I completely understand. We can take comfort knowing that he was a Christian and he is in a better place, loving all of those who he missed.
@Hagar this place wont be the same without you old man.
