1. I grew up with the Brydsons.  The girl mentioned was probably in diapers then. I remember the track championship of 1988.  Chris Barnes is on my friends list on facebook, for what that is worth. Regarding powerlifting, I shook hands with Mark Henry once, in Austin.  A lot of good athletes, and good people from Silsbee, no doubt about it.
2.
Odd that you are from Silsbee but call yourself Kountzer.
Trudat.  Years ago I thought of a name that represented my SE Texas roots.  Stuff like 'Silsbee bee' sounded too out of it.   So I put a r on the end of Kountze and I liked it.   When Silsbee brings home a state trophy, (other than the one in track in 1988), in football or basketball then maybe I will change it.   Don't get it twisted, even if it looks that way.  I luv me some Silsbee.  I've never spent more than a few hours in Kountze.  I lived in Beaumont for awhile, but it still didn't feel like home.  Austin is cool, but I don't plan to move there.  I've lived in Houston for 20 + years.  When people ask me where I am from I tell them Silsbee.
3. I am not that impressed with Silsbee's  post players either, especially after watching that big dude that plays for Cleveland.  He's at home, and Silsbee's bigs got at least one more game to play, maybe more.  It's like that sometimes. Fred Williams coached a few years at Silsbee.  He didn't win a state title there.  As for his son?  I have my doubts.  I always felt Boutte was following the talent.  He's a good coach and all.  When the talent level at Ozen starts heading toward low tide he got out of there in a hurry.  It is hard to make wine out of turnip juice.   I don't care how good a coach you are. No, I have never seen a Silsbee team win a team state championship.   There is more to life that winning state.   There are lots of good folks in Silsbee.  I am glad I grew up there.  Lot of good Doctors, Lawyers, engineers, (I'm talking about black professionals at that), good sanitation workers, you name it.   If a Silsbee team never wins district again, I am still glad to be from Silsbee.
4. Every season this discussion comes up.  I said several years ago that it was Michael Dabney('75).  Dabney had uncanny accuracy on his jumpshot.  He was silky smooth, had all the moves.  He had handles, with both hands.  He had hops and could play inside.  He could also step outside and hit 25 footers.  They didn't have the three point line back then.  Dabney would of probably set some records if they did.  Ask some of the ole skool Gs around town how good Michael Dabney was.  They will tell you. David Brown has to be mentioned also.  David Brown was 6'8", weighed about 190 lbs, and was a  high school all american  He got a scholarship to Memphis State.  Memphis State is now Memphis University.   Getting a basketball scholarship to Memphis State is similar to getting one now to U of Texas, or Louisville, or Syracuse.  Not as good as N Carolina, or Kentucky, but close.  He played in the NCAA final four.  Not too many players from Silsbee, or SE Texas can say that. David Brown's team mate and classmate('72) James Hunter has to be mentioned.  Hunter may be the greatest athlete to come out of Silsbee.  He was  6'3", weighed about 195 to 200 lbs.  He had state meet qualifying speed in the 100 dash.  He probably could run a 4.3 something.  The only thing that held him back in basketball was the fact that he was so good in other sports, namely football and track.   On the baskeball court Hunter had the hops, had the quickness and had the moves.  He could hit a jumper too.  Hunter got a full ride at Grambling.  He was voted all american at cornerback there at least twice, and was a number 1 draft pick of the Detroit Lions.  The first time he touched a football during the NFL regular season opener, he took the kick off 100 yards for a touchdown.   If he had concentrated more on basketball he probably would of done similar things on the basketball court.   Ask coach Bubba McGallion what kind of athlete Hunter was. Those are my picks.  I never saw Darrell MacArthur.  I was gone to the military.
5. I left with about 2 minutes to go.  HJ was up by 17, that game was over.  So, I didn't see anything happen as far as fights.  I am not surprised though.  Parking was tight, and fights have a way of breaking out at Cleveland playoff games, lol.  That stuff was happening when I was in high school.
6. Aiight I went to Baytown, to the Lee College gym.  Thank goodness for gps or I would of never found it on my on.  I saw a decent game.   Cleveland has a lot of talent and size.  I guess it's the coaching.  # 12, Ross, is a very good player.  He's going to be playing at somebodie's college or university, if he puts it all together.  Same for 40, Cedric Reed.  Only he will prolly be playing football. As for the HJ Hawks?   Man, they are fundamentally sound and very well coached.   Turner is all that, chips and dip.  Sutherland can shoot lights out.  He played just like you would expect from the coaches son.  Prudhomme is the stuff.  He is going to take over, totally, next year.  # 5 held his own with the Cleveland guards.  Good team. HJ vs. Silsbee?   Hard to say.  Who else is in the region 3, 3A tournament?   Two good teams coming out of Hardin County. Silsbee alum  ~ Kountzer ~
7. Hmm.  Yates plays Jones at the Merrell Center in Katy.  That's even closer.
8. Oh well, scratch that off the list. I am leaning toward going and see the HJ Hawks anyway.  I live in Houston & Baytown is not that far away.
9. Kountze vs. New Waverly looks to be the game of the night Monday.  If I leave @ 6pm, I would barely make it on time, assuming they will start the game at 7:30pm, up in Livingston. HJ at Cleveland in Baytown would be a much easier game to get to. Silsbee @ WOS at PAM is out of the question.  Ain't gonna happen, not for me.
10.
Way too many turnovers to start the 4th
Aiight EG
11. You have to start at lilttle dribblers and teach good shooting form and technique.  Once you taught them, they have to be willing to practice good technique on their own.  A lot of good athletes come out of Silsbee every year, but most of them don't know how to shoot well.  If Silsbee ever puts together a team that is fundamentally sound, where most of the team can dribble and drive both ways, and can shoot good mid range jump shots, they will win a state title.  They may be able to do it this year, but I have my doubts.  Cleveland looks serious. My .02
12. Well, I got to see the Silsbee Tigers play a basketball game again.  I connected with some old friends.  I saw an exciting game.  Too exciting.  Better FT shooting would of put this game away in double digits.  The Tigers did their best, and that is all you can ask.  Bryan Rudder has an impressive team, especially 24 Marquis Taylor.  Pheal Hill is the heart of the Silsbee team.  He's a lot like his dad.  I don't know what his time in the 40 is, but if it is good he would make a good defensive back. I got to shake hands with Aggies We are.. It was a good night. DB aka Kountzer
13. Kountze has Silsbee's number, or so it seems.  Mind you, I am a Silsbee alumni.
14. Hmmm.  Silsbee is playing @ college prk h/s thursday.  This game has potential.  I might show up.
15. I doubt seriously if all of the Yates players grew up in the third ward area.  High school basketball stars play AAU in the offseason.  It is very easy to arrange a bunch of aau all stars to attend the same school.  This is easy to do in a large school district in a large urban area like Houston. So, with all that in mind, Yates would probably beat the '92 HJ team.
16.

Carl Dukes (ESPN Radio) interviewed one of Yate's player's father.  I believe his last name is Young and he is an asst coach at UH.  In the third quarter there was a bench clearing brawl in which both teams had their benches ejected from the game and play was halted for 15 minutes.  Mr. Young defended this as something that happens in sports.  Maybe proffessional sports.  I've never seen a bench clearing brawl in High School.  Then he went on to say that Yates only knows one way to play (press all the time) and that these kids need to play like that to show off to the scouts to get into the best colleges.  Seeing as how most of these players will eventually be making a living doing something other than playing basketball, its sad to see that their coach and father won't be contributing to making them better adults.
Not for sure but I believe the Mr. Young you are referring to is Michael Young.  He played at Yates in high school then went to UH as part of Phi Slamma Jamma and played some in the pros (only team I remember was the Celtics).
I hope Michael Young's son has a  better and more accurate jumpshot than he did.  Back in '83 he could not buy two points.  If he could of hit a few corner jumpers U of H, Phi slamma Jamma, etc, would of beat NC State and won the NCAA championship, and coach Guy V Lewis would be in the basketball hall of fame. DB
17. There are lots of poor and working class immigrants living near Lee High School.   Basketball is not the sport of choice in that area.  it is probably soccer.  It is an old and run down school.  There are some affluent families in that area.  They send their children to expensive private schools.   Yates running up the score on Lee is classless.   That would be like one of the big suburban schools beating Yates by 10 runs in baseball.  It is too easy to do, and therefore not that big a deal.
18. I had a chance to attend that Yates game.  All day yesterday I was turning it over in my head, should I go to the Yates game, or should I stay committed to a prior appointment.  I ended up going with the prior appointment.  Butler fieldhouse is only a few miles from where I was working. I don't think I wanted to see a game like that anyway.
19. What is the status of the injury to Silsbee basketball player Stallworth?
20. Competition in that tournament near Fort Worth, like last year, against teams like Sanger, would of been a better test of the Silsbee team.
21. Fundamental basketball skills have declined noticable in the NBA.  That has been in the news at least ten years to twenty years now.  It used to be that in the World games or the olympics you could take a team of NCAA stars and take on the world.  Now, a team of NBA allstars can't even do it.  The rest of the world has caught up.  I think it started with ESPN.  ESPN sportscenter nba highlights focus on the monster dunk.  Fundamentals BBall skills seldom make the top plays shown on sportscenter.  The high school kids emulate their nba role models.
22. Whoa.  Lotta bball between here and the playoffs, much less Austin.  More observations: you can't put much stock in early polls.  NW is prolly ranked #1 in 2A based on last year.  An argument can be raised that Kountzer should be ranked higher in the 2A polls since they beat Sislbee once already this year, and New Waverly lost to them.  Last but not least New Waverly is 2A, & Silsbee is 3A.
