well, at least they'll have a shot, even if it's like 1/10 of 1% that they'll ever make it past AA. at least they have a chance! -
Legislature approves $5.85 million for Rollover Pass closure Those who fish Rollover Pass might want to start scoping out new sites to cast their lines. Money to close the pass has been OK'd, but anglers have a little time to relocate since it's likely to be about two years before work begins, said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson. The Texas Legislature budgeted $5.85 million to fill in the channel, a popular spot for fishing that has been accelerating erosion on either side of the pass for many years. But closing it has long been a hotly debated proposal. Former Gilchrist resident Cliff Tomerlin said he wants the government to find a solution to erosion that doesn't require closing the pass. "We feel that the economic impact is going to be very great (if Rollover Pass closes)," Tomerlin, 48, told The Enterprise in a telephone interview. "It wasn't just a free fishing place. A lot of businesses depended on the business that came from people going to the pass to sport fish." Patterson regretted the loss. "That's an unfortunate result," he said. "It's one of those good news/bad news scenarios." Beaumont resident Vivian Todd, whose family's Crystal Beach house was wiped out, was elated that the project had been approved. "Closing Rollover is the number one best thing they could ever do," she said in a telephone interview. She feels the closure will greatly assist Bolivar's recovery. "It won't happen overnight, but it will happen," she said. Before work starts, the project has to go through an environmental assessment. Agencies including Texas Parks and Wildlife, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Galveston County will be involved. Public hearings also will be part of the process. "Assuming all of that is positive, hopefully we'll commence in two years to close the pass," Patterson said. The project also would reconstitute dunes and renourish beaches. The corps had been spending about $1 million a year dredging Rollover Pass, Patterson estimated. "We hope to get the corps to take the money they were spending on dredging and apply it to other projects," he said, adding that renourishing Bolivar beaches would be an ideal use. But resistance to the plan is far from dead. Tomerlin, who now lives in San Antonio with his wife, Connie, is a member of the Gilchrist Community Association, an organization that pays for the upkeep of Rollover Pass. On July 4, Tomerlin said the association will have a barbecue and fishing tournament at Rollover Pass to raise money for studies that would show the economic impact the pass has on the Gilchrist community. "We'd like to have the town come back," he said.

to me, the deciding factor should not have anything to do with whether or not he talked to the media. the sportsmanship issue is much more important than the media issue. of course, the NBA is a business, so who cares about sportsmanship as long as Kobe's interview will be on sportscenter! -
...and get them a date with Spain in the Semi-Final game. hey, if they play well enough to make it to the semis, i suppose that anything could happen if they got there...

Ewing, from the brook
-
just three, so far as i can tell, counting the two lamar pitchers.

An already special week got a little better for former West Brook baseball standout James Ewing on Wednesday. That's because Ewing, a second baseman for the College World Series-bound University of Southern Mississippi, got picked in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the New York Mets. Before Ewing begins his professioinal baseball career, he'll play for Southern Miss in the College World Series, which opens this weekend in Omaha, Neb. Ewing and the Golden Eagles will play Sunday night against the University of Texas. Ewing plays for Southern Miss with a twin brother, Michael, who also played at West Brook. James Ewing is batting .314 with four home runs and 42 RBI and has played in 52 games this season. He has struck out just 18 times this season. Ewing helped put Southern Miss in the College World Series when he turned a game-ending double play in a super regional series-cliniching game Sunday at Florida. He also hit a home run in that game. In addition to Ewing, two Lamar University pitchers got picked in later rounds, right-handed senior Ricky Testa in the 18th round by the Colorado Rockies and right-handed junior James Brandhorst in the 20th by the Baltimore Orioles. The three-day, 50-round baseball draft began Tuesday. Teams will complete 30 rounds today.
-
they've finished the 30th round, which is as far as they'll go today. they'll complete rounds 31 through 50 tomorrow.
-
go to mlb.com i've been following because i have a cousin who's probably going to go in the late rounds.

i'd be happy with two points, but four WOULD be wonderful, and possibly good enough to push them through

i can't believe this thread turned into a racial issue somehow. still, i'll oblige bluedove with an answer as best as i can. To MY knowledge, I know of two black moderators. It's quite possible that there are a couple more, as I don't know very many people on this site outside of the site itself. That number has nothing to do with skin color. It's based on the fact that those two posters are very active on the site and make intelligent posts. if you two didn't constantly hijack threads and cause controversy, it's quite possible that both of you would be moderators by now based on your sports knowledge and the amount of time that you spend on the board. Another key question is this... what percentage of the posters who have more than, let's say 1000 posts are black? 5% maybe? if being active on the board is one of the prerequisites for becoming a mod, this number alone would go a long way to explaining why there aren't many black mods.

LOS ANGELES -- Tim Floyd suddenly resigned as basketball coach at Southern California on Tuesday following allegations that he gave $1,000 in cash to a man who helped steer former star player O.J. Mayo to the Trojans. Floyd submitted a one-paragraph letter to USC athletic director Mike Garrett saying he was quitting after four seasons because he no longer had full enthusiasm for his job. "I accept Tim's decision and wish him well," Garrett said in a statement. The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Miss., first reported Floyd's resignation. He is from Hattiesburg. [Hidden Content]

good move. he's doing a lot of damage with a lot of unproven players. he deserves a lot of the credit, as well as nolan ryan, who's work with the pitchers has termed them into "gasp" one of the better overall pitching teams in the american league from starter to closer. -

Tiger is the best of all time. look what he's doing so soon after such serious injuries. according to the commentators (as well as Mr. Nicklaus himself), tiger has been playing tentatively since he's come back, like he's afraid to hurt himself again. as "badly" as he's golfed since coming back, he now has two wins and 5 top-10s in just seven events. and he's been OFF, as anyone who's watched could tell. the last two rounds of this tourney are the first i've seen him start to show a little of what he was doing before the injury. now that he's starting to feel more confident that he won't re-hurt himself, i'm assuming he'll start dominating again. or he might just keep golfing "badly" and finish the season with 5 or 6 wins and 15 or so top-10s.

they'll be a bit better, and will benefit from the fact that there are only two quality teams in the district. i'm not trying to insult the others, but there's a HUGE gap between the top two teams and everyone else. -
A topic we can agree on! like tvc said, maybe it's time for us to go buy a lottery ticket.
