Done With Lamar Football

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with Lamar Football. We have great home grown talent and can't get these yo yo's to sign them. We have several good players in the area but can not get them signed by Lamar. I am sick and tired of the shady, poor character d1 dismissals that these guys sign. They were brought in to build a program, not sign a bunch of JC problem children. Mr. Quriante and Mr. Stampley deserve shots, both are Willie Ray Smith Award Finalists, and Montana is on both sides of the ball. We dropped this program to begin with because they would not recruit local talent, I for one am not renewing my tickets because of this again. Mr Lamar President, either fix it, get ride of the football staff, or I along with several other people will non renew my tickets.. Hell at least you got McMurry and Panhandle tech on the schedule, you should be able to beat them....May want to schedule UTMB...think they are undefeated.

i agree with raider attendence cant be much worst, i went to the last few games last year. and getting thug rejects from other programs and jc's does not seem to help, if you are going to play texas college you could win with west brook or ozen talent ,  and other schools in the area, so why not go local? but it is same with most of lamar sports , not out of area or state but out of country.....which makes no sense

I have a question and I'm not trying to favor any side on this one: Are there other D-1 schools after the local talent? Your high school talent does not always flow with what college coaches are looking for. And if they do sign a local talent, does this mean the attendance will go up?
I agree with you. Maybe the kids are not what Lamar is looking for. These two kids may be good in this area but if Lamar has a chance to sign a kid out of dallas or houston who is better than they will sign out of area. Its a whole big country out there and there are better players to choose from than Montana or Stampley. Its not going to make me not watch Lamar local kids or not im going to support my local team.

Wow, I can't believe what I'm reading.  Do you guys really think that Lamar should sign players just because they live and played high school football in SE Texas?  I promise you everyone that plays in SE Texas is NOT college football material.  There are some very good players that come from this area but that doesn't mean they are good enough to play college football, or maybe they are good enough to play college ball but they don't fit Lamar's scheme.
Raiderblue, you said the following, "We have great home grown talent and can't get these yo yo's to sign them."  Are you joking?  Here's Lamar's 2012 roster.  Let's see how many players they have from SE Texas.

You guys also must consider that just because Lamar recruits theses guys doesn't mean they will sign with Lamar. Other Southland schools also recruits this area. Also, I think Lamar is loaded with local talent. However, you will not win just with local talent. You do have to expand your recruiting base and sign a few JC players. I agree with staying away from FBS school rejects. There's a reason they're not playing at their previous schools. I just don't think Woodard is a very good recruiter.

After looking at Ty's post I'm a little more undecided on this issue now. 30+% out of the area is pretty high, but I'm not sure about the people they have either. Are we sure these area kids on the roster aren't walk-ons, or were they actually recruited? Then I do believe we do have athletes with college here (just maybe not the best college grades), and Lamar isn't really difficult for them to get into. Had you noticed some of Memorial's schemes in the past years, that has college football written all over it. But even though we may not be in favor of who they go after, at least we can agree they can do a whole lot better.

Lamar has 91 players listed on this roster and 34 of them are from SE Texas.  I'm not great in math but I would say that SE Texas players make up somewhere between 35% and 40% of the roster.

What more do you want?
Yes it may look that way, but how many of those are walk ons that were not actually recruited by lamar and chose to stay close to home. How many are still on the team? I know of three that forsure are not. Just because they are on the roster does not mean they were recruited by Lamar. I know Joseph Viator for one is a walk on who chose to be there to be close to home, not because Lamar brought him in.

Who cares about that the golden triangle is not as big a hot bed for talent as it was 10 years ago. I have talked to many recruiters over the past 5 years who say that the talent level is down thats what they stay around the houston area and metroplex. The players that can play in the triangle are usually recruited by big schools and other southland schools that Lamar has to fight with for recruits. Some of the kids yall speak of that Lamar should be going after are really good high school players but that doesn't mean they will be good college players.

How many of the players on Lamar's roster are walk-ons?  I don't know if there is a way for us to find this information without talking directly to one of the coaches, but I'm willing to bet the number is very low.  I'm going to go with 5% or less. (I may be wrong but I bet it's not much higher if I am)
I'm talking about players from southeast Texas. I counted at least 7 from southeast texas that were walk ons. My point is that Lamar didn't actually recruit this kids much at all. They probably chose to stay close to home due to personal choice. Not from Lamar's superior recruiting from this area.

lamar has already got commits from fisk(pa),couron(nederland),mitchell(central) and i know a newton has a kid committed.not sure if lamar could do any better recruiting locals.if a local player thinks they got what it takes and isnt being offered then walk on and show them theyre wrong.lamar has some issues with there football progrm but local recruiting isnt one of them.

Who cares where they are from. I don't watch Texas or A&M because of how many SETX boys are on the roster. I watch because they have good programs. Who ever started this thread got their feelings hurt or something. If Lamar was undefeated last season no one would not care if every player was from tim-buc-to.  The fact is SETX is well represented, but  we do not compete well yet in the Southland Conference. This is essentially a new program, so give it a rest. They have done well so far and should continue to improve. The program should be evaluated on wins and loses, not how many local boys are on the team.

I would ask raiderblue to go see how many other SLC teams or FCS teams have our local talent on them now. Those would be the kids that LU missed out on because the kids at FBS schools were not going to LU! Little heads up, there aren't many at all. So it looks to me like most of the recruitable SETX FCS prospects are in the LU program. Reasons from PNG was recruited by LU this year, but liked SFA better. Not LUs fault. Kid just wanted to get away.

Lets do this, have Lamar fire Woodard and his entire staff and Make you the Head Coach and the rest of your poker buddies fill out the rest of the staff.  You are only allowed to have players from local schools on the team no transfers from any other school.  You are not allowed to schedule an opponet that is not FCS or FBS and your attendance and wins have to be more than woodards or we will fire you.

Now I dont have the soultion to fix Lamar football im just a HS coach but dang people the way I see it is either suck it up and support who we have or make a sizable donation to Lamar and put your two cents in.  Im not saying you cant have an opinion but if your soulution wont win anymore games than the current staff then think of another approach.  The best talent Lamar can get is the only way Lamar will win not the best Local talent.  Look at UNT New stadium not far from the Metroplex and they cant win either.

I'm in no way defending Lamar or its choices. Lamar only had 7 or 8 football players that graduated leaving them with only 7 or 8 football scholarships this year (don't shoot the messenger, this is what I was told from one of the coaches when my son's name was thrown in the hat). So they may not have had many options to go with too many local players. Sad but true I was glad my son didn't want to go to Lamar but for my own personal reasons though.

But Sam Houston wins with its out of town players while Lamar loses and loses badly. If Lamar isn't going to recruit locally that is fine but they better get good players they can win with. The problem is Woodard has no clue what he is doing and in over his head. It is time for LU to get a real coach who can move this team forward and let Woodard go back to someplace that isn't out of his league like the arena league or JUCO.
