We are 76 days away from the start of the Texas High School Football Season. And today is.....

NATIONAL CAREER NURSE ASSISTANTS DAY

Always on the first day of National Nursing Assistants Week, it is National Career Nurse Assistants Day.  This day is set aside to recognize the nursing assistants who dedicate their lives to the well-being of others for 5 to as many as 58 years.

Nursing assistants many times work in hospitals and nursing homes performing everyday living tasks for the elderly, chronically ill or rehabilitation patients who cannot care for themselves.

A more in-depth training and qualification that covers a wider scope of responsibility is indicated by government certification.  The state distributes these certification exams and the classes to study for them are offered by the American Red Cross as well as other providers.

On this day, we want to THANK these people for the wonderful job that they do and the very special care that they give to those in need.

NATIONAL BLAME SOMEONE ELSE DAY

0251.jpg?w=490

Are you ready to have a good day?  National Blame Someone Else Day is always celebrated on the first Friday the 13th of the year.  This year the lucky month is June!

The way to celebrate today is self-explanatory in it’s name and really not much more needs to be said.  If you do not want to blame someone, put the blame on something
(remember, it is all in fun!).

NATIONAL BLAME SOMEONE ELSE DAY HISTORY

National Blame Someone Else Day, an “unofficial” national holiday was invented by Anne Moeller of Clio, Michigan in 1982.  One day, her alarm clock failed to go off, hence creating a domino effect of bad luck events throughout the day.  The day happened to be Friday the 13th.

NATIONAL FLAG DAY

National Flag Day is celebrated annually in the United States on June 14.  This day commemorates adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777.

On National Flag Day, Americans show respect for the U.S. Flag and what it represents.  Our independence and unity as a nation is represented by our flag.  The flag has become a powerful symbol of Americanism and is flown proudly.

  • Fairfield, Washington hosts the oldest continuing Flag Day parade which began in 1909 or 1910.
  • Quincy, Massachusetts’ Flag Day parade began in 1952 and claims it is “the longest-running parade of its kind in the nation”.
  • Troy, New York holds the largest Flag Day parade drawing around 50,000 plus spectators each year.
  • Woburn, Washington holds an annual Flag Day carnival and firework display.
  • The National Flag Day Foundation holds an observance for Flag Day each year on the second Sunday in June.
  • The Betsy Ross House continues to be the site of Philadelphia’s observance of Flag Day.

Betsy Ross is given credit, by many, for  creating the first American flag.  Since 1977, the design of the flag has been officially modified 26 times.  For 47 years, the 48-star flag was in effect.  In 1959, the 49-star version became official on July 4.

President Eisenhower ordered the 50-star flag on August 21, 1959.

Seventeen year old Robert G. Heft of Ohio is credited with designing the 50 star American flag.  Of the more than 1,500 designs that were submitted to President Dwight D. Eisenhower,  his was chosen.

Many people have died protecting our country.  Today, on National Flag Day, raise the flag and fly it proudly.

NATIONAL FLAG DAY HISTORY

On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation deeming June 14 as Flag Day.  President Wilson stated that he selected this day because “It is the anniversary of the day upon which the flag of the United States was adopted by the Congress as the emblem of the Union”  and he wrote, “On that day rededicate ourselves to the nation, ‘one and inseparable’ from which every thought that is not worthy of our fathers’ first vows in independence, liberty, and right shall be excluded and in which we shall stand with united hearts.”     http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=62991#ixzz1xhaGeTux

NATIONAL FUDGE DAY

Celebrated annually on June 16, it is National Fudge Day.  Today is a food holiday that allows you to indulge in your favorite flavor of fudge.  Some of the most popular fudge flavors are chocolate, chocolate nut, peanut butter, maple, and maple nut.

A Western confectionery, fudge is usually sweet and rich.  It consists of combining sugar, butter and milk, heating it to the correct temperature and then mixing it while it cools to get it to a smooth, creamy consistency.  There are many varieties and flavors of fudge, with chocolate being the most popular.

In 1886 a letter was found, written by Emelyn Bettersby Hartridge, a student at Vassar college in Poughkeepsie, New York, referring to fudge that her cousin had made, in Baltimore Maryland, selling it for 40 cents per pound.  Hartridge was able to obtain the recipe and in 1888, she made 30 pounds of fudge for the Vassar College Senior Auction.

In the late 19th century, some shops on Mackinac Island, Michigan, began to produce similar products as the Vassar College fudge, and sold it to summer vacationers.  Fudge is still produced in some of the original shops there today.

To celebrate National Fudge Day, pick some up at your local confectionery store, share it with your family and/or friends and enjoy!!

You may also want to try making some homemade fudge yourself.  Following is a “tried and true” recipe to get you started.

NATIONAL STEWART’S ROOT BEER DAY

For many years now, June 17 has celebrated National Stewart’s Root Beer Day.  Celebrating this holiday each year is easy, just gather together some friends together, some chilled glasses and some Stewart’s Root Beer and enjoy!!

A premium soft drink that is made in the United States, Stewart’s Root Beer originated as an “old fashioned” fountain soda in 1924 in Mansfield, Ohio at the Stewart’s Restaurant (a chain of root beer stands).

1924:
Opening of the First Stewart’s Root Beer Stand

“1924, Frank Stewart set out to develop the world’s best-tasting root beer which he intended to sell in order to supplement his income as a schoolteacher. With the secret recipes in hand, he soon opened his first Stewart’s Drive-In where he served ice-cold Stewart’s Root Beer in tall, frosty mugs. The creamy taste of Stewart’s Root Beer was an instant success and has been enjoyed by consumers for over 75 years!”  http://www.drinkstewarts.com/history.aspx

1990:
Stewart’s Produced in Bottles for the First Time

“For the first 66 years, Stewart’s Root Beer was only available at Stewart’s root beer stands and later, at Stewart’s Drive-Ins. In 1990, Cable Car Beverage Corporation acquired the bottling rights for Stewart’s and began selling Stewart’s Root Beer in 12 oz. amber glass bottles.”  http://www.drinkstewarts.com/history.aspx

1997:
The Cable Car Beverage Corporation was purchased by Triarc in November of 1997. 2000:
In 2000, Cadbury Schweppes PLC acquired the Stewart’s  brands along with Snapple and Mistic Brands.  * In 2006 at the World Cup of Root Beer, Stewart’s Root Beer was named the top Root Beer!

* Pittsburgh is the root beer guzzling capital of the world!

Enjoy the following link to recipes including Stewart’s beverages: http://www.drinkstewarts.com/recipes.aspx

On this day, many stores across the United States will be hosting event demos, of  Stewart’s Root Beer, to their customers.

NATIONAL GO FISHING DAY

Today is a day to take some time from your daily routine to call a friend and then go find a stream, a pond, a lake or a river, bait your hooks, cast out your poles and catch a fish or two as it in National Go Fishing Day!

Fishing is a favorite recreational pastime of many across the
United States.

The ancient practice of fishing dates back to at least the beginning of the Paleolithic period about 40,000 years ago. Early cave painting show that fish consumption was important for survival.

The earliest known English essay on recreational fishing was published in 1496.

It was during the 16th and 17th centuries that recreational fishing gained it’s popularity.  In 1653, Izaak Walton published a book titled, The Compleat Angler or Contemplative Man’s Recreation.   Walton’s book is the definitive work that champions the position of the angler who loves fishing just for the sake of it.

Pleasure or sport is what draws recreational fishers to the waters while
commercial fishers fish for profit.

Recreational fishing includes conventions, rules, licensing restrictions and laws that limit the way in which fish may be caught.  A rod, reel, line and hooks, with any one of the different forms of bait or lures, are the most common form of recreational fishing.  The practice of catching (or attempting to catch) fish with a hook is known as angling.  It is sometimes expected, required or just practiced by some, while angling, that the fish be returned to the water.  This is known as catch and release.

Knowledge about the fish and their behavior, in the area that you are at, include migration, foraging and  habitat.   This knowledge will help you to use the right fishing techniques needed for a successful fishing adventure.  There are some fishermen that still follow fishing folklore, which claim that fish feeding patterns are influenced by the position of the sun and the moon.

Celebrate National Go Fishing Day with a few friends or the whole family, in a boat or on the shore, catching fish until you must go home.

NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY

June 19, 2014 is National Dump the Pump Day’s 9th year of celebrating and also encouraging people to save money by riding public transportation instead of driving.

With gas prices being high and with a tight economy,  riding public transportation is a good alternative and an economical way to save money.   Many Americans use local public transportation to commute to and from work, school, appointments, shopping, errands, family visits and etc.

Not only can this save you money on fuel, it can also save wear and tear on your car, possibly reduce your commute time and can help in reducing road congestion.

Told my wife we are looking at a divorce if she thinks I'm driving to College Station to watch what Livingston will be putting on the field.  Told her I'll drive her to every one of my grand daugther's basketball games, but no way I'm giving up watching great football. A man got to draw the line somewhere, even if it's outdoors in the dog house. :D  :D SETX FOOTBALL.............

AMERICAN EAGLE DAY

Celebrated each year on June 20, it is American Eagle Day.  This day is annually set aside to honor our national symbol, raise awareness for protecting the Bald Eagle, to assist in the recovery of their natural environments and to take part in educational outreach.

The Bald Eagle is both the national bird and the national animal of the United States of America and appears on it”s Seal.

In the later 20th century, the Bald Eagle was on the brink of extirpation in the continental United States.  Eventually populations recovered and on July 12, 1995, the species was removed from the U.S. Federal Government’s List of Endangered Species and transferred to the List of Threatened Species.  On June 2007, it was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States.

The Bald Eagle’s range includes most of Canada, Alaska, all of the contiguous United States and northern Mexico.  They can be found near large bodies of open water where there is an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.

Opportunistic feeders, Bald Eagle’s survive mainly on fish, swooping down and snatching them from the water.  Their nests are the largest nests of any North American bird and the largest tree nest ever recorded for any animal species.  A  Bald Eagle’s nest was measured at 13 ft deep and 8.2 ft wide and it weighed 1.1 ton.

The name “Bald Eagle” derives from an older meaning of “white headed” as the bird is actually no bald.  The adult eagle is mainly brown with a white head and tail.
