 NATIONAL MERRY-GO-ROUND DAY

July 25 is a day associated with carnival music and children’s laughter as we annually celebrate National Merry-Go-Round Day.

The merry-go-round (also known as a carousel) is an amusement ride that consists of a rotating circular platform with seats on it for it’s riders.  It’s seats are traditionally in rows and are made up of wooden horses or other animals mounted on posts.  Many of they animals are made to move up and down to stimulate galloping and are accompanied by circus music.

Names of the animals normally consist of Galloper, Jumper, Roundabout, Horseabout and Flying Horses.

Any rotating platform may also be called a merry-go-round and on a playground, is usually a simple, child-powered rotating platform with bars or handles to which children can cling while riding.

  • The earliest known depiction of the merry-go-round is in 500 A.D. in the Byzantine Empire, which depicts baskets, carrying riders, suspended from a central pole.
  • Hessville, Ohio was the site of the first United States created merry-go-round.  It was created by Franz Wiesenhoffer during the 1840′s.
  • July 25, 1871 – The first carousel patent.

To celebrate today, find a merry-go-round and have fun…..they are not just for the kids and there is a kid in all of us!!

NATIONAL MERRY-GO-ROUND-DAY HISTORY

July 25 was chosen as the celebration day for National Merry-Go-Round Day, an “unofficial” national holiday, as it coincides with the first United States patent that was issued for the modern carousel.  That patent was awarded to William Schneider of Davenport Iowa on July 25, 1871.

BUFFALO SOLDIERS DAY

Buffalo Soldier Commemorations have been held throughout our nation since 1992 when the United States Congress passed a law designating July 28 as Buffalo Soldiers Day in the United States.  Buffalo Soldiers Day commemorates the formation in 1866 of the first regular Army regiments comprising African-American soldiers.

“Buffalo Soldiers” (one of many African-American regiments raised during the Civil War) were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-black regiments in the regular U.S. Army.

Mark Matthews, who is now buried at Arlington National Cemetery, was the oldest living Buffalo Soldier at 111 years old when he died on September 6, 2005.

The segregated regiments were disbanded during the 1940′s and 1950′s as the U.S. armed forces embraced integration.

On the first Buffalo Soldiers Day in 1992, a monument to the Buffalo Soldier was dedicated at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas by General Colin Powell.

The Buffalo Soldier Museum is located in Houston Texas :  http://buffalosoldiermuseum.com/

Rain Day - Waynesburg's Claim to Fame

July 29th may be just another day to the rest of the world, but to the residents of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, it has a special significance that is passed along from generation to generation.

It all started during the late 1800's at a drugstore located on High Street (the main street in town). An unknown local farmer remarked to William Allison, the pharmacist, that it always seems to rain on July 29th. This comment inspired Allison to keep an annual record of the rainfall on that day. William's brother, Albert, continued recording this mystical event; then, sometime during the 1920's, the record keeping was taken over by the late Bryon Daily.

Rain Day would have remained a local phenomenon if it hadn't been for the efforts of the late Waynesburg newsman John O'Hara. He began sending Rain Day stories to other newspapers in the 1930's. Today, newspapers, TV and radio stations from around the world flood the town of Waynesburg with calls every July 29th to learn if it has indeed rained.

For many years, the only observances of Rain Day were the annual hat bet between Bryon Daily's son, John and a national or regional celebrity and a brief ceremony on the Courthouse steps. In 1979, the Waynesburg Borough Special Events Commission was created to hold a special celebration on July 29th each year. That same year, the Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce held the first annual Miss Rain Day Pageant. In 2003, the Chamber of Commerce created a new non-profit entity, Rain Day Scholarship, Inc. with the sole purpose to plan and execute the pageant. Each year, one talented local teenage girl wins the coveted crown, hundreds of dollars in scholarship savings bonds and the chance to 'reign' over the day's festivities.

Among the activities sponsored by the Special Events Commission on July 29th is a street fair in the heart of town, live entertainment on the courthouse steps, arts and crafts booths, hometown food booths, children's games and assorted other diversions - including an umbrella decorating contest. Best of all, the admission is free! The festivities are silenced each year to pay a moment's tribute to the men of Company K, 2nd Battalion, 110th Infantry - a battalion from Waynesburg that lost men in France during World War I on Rain Day, 1918. Nearly half of the 250 Greene County men were either killed or wounded on that day. As John O'Hara once wrote, "On that Rain Day in 1918, it rained bullets on the men of Company K".

July 29th, Rain Day in Waynesburg, is the only holiday anywhere in the world that is not a success unless it rains! It is just another day to the rest of the world, but to the people of Waynesburg, it is special festivities and memories on Main Street.

Mutt's Day

It's Mutt's Day.  Mutts deserve their day in the spotlight, as much as a pure breed. If you own a mutt, or you are a mutt (reading this), then you know this day is for you.

By definition a mutt, sometimes called a "Half-breed", is a dog that is of mixed breed.  They come from two to several breeds. Purebred owners, and sometimes the public in general, view them as lesser in many ways. Mutt owners know better. They value the diversity and uniqueness of their mutts. Sure, a mutt doesn't carry the expensive price tag that a purebred with papers has on its head. To the mutt owner, however, the mutt is invaluable. In addition, mutts don't walk around needing to prove anything. You won't see them strutting around any dog shows trying to prove they are the best.

To all mutts and and mutt owners, we hope you thoroughly enjoy Mutt's Day. Spend the day relaxing and doing all the things you and your dog like to do. Do so with both of your chins held high. For your mutt is worth a million bucks!

             AIR FORCE DAY

  History of Air Force Day

Air Force Day was established on August 1, 1947, by President Truman "in recognition of the personnel of the victorious Army Air Forces and all those who have developed and maintained our nation's air strength." August 1 was chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment, in 1907, of the Aeronautical Division in the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the Army.

Air Force Day came into being immediately after the signing of the National Security Act of 1947, although the status of the air element of the military was uncertain. Thus, although it was called Air Force Day, its first celebration was staged by the Army Air Forces and not by the U.S. Air Force.

Underlying the Air Force Day celebration was a need to increase "both official and public awareness of the priority of importance of air forces in any system of national security," according to Mr. Truman. "The great strategic fact of our generation is that the United States now possesses live frontiers -- the frontiers of the air -- and that the oceans are no longer sure ramparts against attack."

In his message to the nation on the first Air Force Day, Mr. Truman said, "I remind all of our citizens that the air power of the nation is essential to the preservation of our liberty, and that the continued development of the science of air transportation is vital to the trade and commerce of a peaceful world."

Air Force Day was last observed on August 1, 1949.

NATIONAL COAST GUARD DAY

August 4 celebrates National Coast Guard Day.  This annually celebrated day is a time to pay tribute and honor to all whom have served in the Coast Guard.

In the United States, the U.S. Coast Guard is a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and one of the country’s seven uniformed services.  It is a maritime, military, multi-mission service that is unique among the U.S. military branches as it has a maritime law enforcement mission and a federal regulatory agency mission as part of it’s mission set.

Thank you to all who have served in the United States Coast Guard.

When Hurricane Katrina struck the Atlantic coast of America, the US Coast Guard saved over 33,500 lives, an estimated 24,000 of these were rescued from peril in severely dangerous conditions.

In America, there are thousands of events nation-wide for you to get involved in and show your support.

NATIONAL OYSTER DAY

Did you know there are over 100 different species of oysters? They’re typically named after the body of water in which they’re grown because they take on the characteristics of the water they live in.

Here are some other interesting oyster facts:

  • The largest oyster-producing body of water in the world is located in Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the U.S.
  • Almost two billion pounds of oysters are eaten each year.
  • In the U.S., east coast oysters tend to be smaller, milder and saltier. West coast oysters are creamy and sweet.
  • Only one out of every 10,000 oysters will produce a pearl.

NATIONAL ROOT BEER FLOAT DAY

Each year on August 6, people around the country order (or make) a root beer float, drink up, enjoy and celebrate National Root Beer Float Day.  Root beer floats are NOT just for kids !

Also known as the “Black Cow” a root beer float is made up of root beer and vanilla ice cream.

Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado, gets the credit for inventing the “Black Cow”  way back in August of 1893.

One night, as Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, was staring out the window and thinking about the line of soda waters that was producing for the citizens of Cripple Creek, he came upon an idea.  The full moon that night that was shining on the snow-capped Cow Mountain reminded him of a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  He hurried back to his bar and added a scoop to the children’s favorite flavor of soda, Myers Avenue Red root beer, tried it, liked it and served it the very next day.  It was an immediate hit.

Wisner named the new creation, “Black Cow Mountain” but the local children shortened the name to “Black Cow“.

Since their creation, thousands of root beer floats are enjoyed around the country each day.

Purple Heart Day

The Medal of Honor that is now the Purple Heart actually began as the ‘Badge of Military Merit.’  On August 7th, 1782 in Newburgh, New York, General George Washington designed a new badge of distinction for enlisted men and noncommissioned officers.  They were awarded for ‘any singularly meritorious action.’  The badge was a figure of a heart in purple cloth or silk, edged with narrow lace or binding.  It was pinned to a uniform coat above the left breast.  That was then, this is now.

purple_heart1.jpg

On January 7th of the year 1931, a new design was reopened.  Ms. Elizabeth Will, an army heraldic specialist in the Office of the Quarter, created the design sketch for the present medal of the Purple Heart.  It consists of a purple enameled heart within a bronze quarter inch border showing a relief profile of George Washington in continental uniform. Washington’s family coat of arms adorns the medal, along with an inscription inside the heart that reads, ‘For Military Merit.’

The Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces that has been wounded or killed, died as a result of a wound in battle, or otherwise designated by the President of the United States.  This now includes those persons killed as a result of friendly fire.  Now we celebrate Purple Heart Day on the anniversary of its inception, August 7th.  On this day it is our patriotic duty to remember and recognize those people willing to serve our country, no matter the price.

       Happiness Happens Day!

1108723_76812844-300x292.jpg

It’s true. Look around, people. Happiness is happening somewhere this moment. In fact, because happiness seems to happen every day, the Secret Society of Happy People declared this day a holiday in 1999 (originally called Admit You’re Happy Day).

So many people have openly responded to the holiday with happiness that the society found it hard to contain all that joy in one day. Now, the celebration has spread to the entire month of August!

Here’s how to celebrate (for any grouches out there who need instruction): (Crack Baby)

  • Smile
  • Wear silver (the official color of Happiness Happens Day)
  • Buy someone coffee or a soda (with your silver coins)
  • Hand out Hershey kisses (they’re wrapped in silver)
  • Put together a happy box filled with thinks that make you smile (favorite photos, cards, letters, quotes, jokes, cartoons, etc.)
  • Listen to other people tell you what makes them happy
  • And, for goodness sake… Don’t rain on any one’s parade!

Despite all the chaos in the world, happy people always manage to find the silver lining in every raincloud.

Need a Happiness Booster? Random acts of kindness are shown to increase your own happiness. The more kindness and gratitude you express, the happier you’ll be!

Some Happy Facts:

  • According to studies, level of happiness is determined by your genes and upbringing (50%), your outlook on life and what you choose to do with your life (40%) and external circumstances (10%).
  • Like fine wine (not whine), happiness matures with age. A survey by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that people ages 20-24 are sad for 3.4 days per month while those who are 65-74 are sad for only 2.3 days per month.
  • Simply exercising 20 minutes for three days a week will help increase your happiness (thank the endorphins!).
  • Happier people are healthier people. They have up to 50% more antibodies!
  • Happy people live an average 9 years longer than unhappy people.
  • Happy people earn more money than unhappy people.
  • Money does play a role in happiness. Those who are able to afford their basic needs are happiest. However, anything above that does not increase your happiness.
  • The more often you hug your children, the happier they’ll be as adults.

Quote of the Day:
“Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

                             NATIONAL GARAGE SALE DAY

National Garage Sale Day is always the second Saturday in August — we celebrate the coming together of those with belongings they no longer want and those with a want for belongings they don’t have.

Make no mistake: Garage sales are big business — even if the average selling price of goods at such events is a mere 85 cents.

Take 85 cents here and 85 cents there, and, pretty soon, you have $4,222,375. That’s the total revenue that U.S. garage sales generate each week, according to the website StatisticBrain.com.

“Running a yard sale is not rocket science,” J.D. Roth notes on his tip-filled website GetRichSlowly.org. “But if you put a little effort into creating an environment where it is pleasant to browse and easy to find treasures, you’ll make a lot more money.”

Preparation is critical, Roth maintains. And being prepared, he adds, means a whole lot more than simply making sure the merchandise is neatly arranged and the cash box is filled with coins and small-denomination bills. (No one, after all, wants to lose a sale just because of an inability to break a $5 bill.)

Roth suggests that proper preparation starts with figuring out why the sale is being held in the first place.

“Are you selling things to make money or to get rid of them? This question affects everything you do, from how you price things to how willing you are to negotiate. Surprisingly, you can often make moremoney (and get rid of more junk) by pricing things low.”

No. 2 on Roth’s recommended to-do list: advertise. Ads should be placed in local newspapers and on websites five or six days before the sale. Neighborhood signs should be eye-catching, simple and, above all, readable.

“It’s best to use big, bold text like ‘HUGE SALE’ with an arrow pointing the right direction.”& amp; amp; lt; /p>

Consumer Reports offers these tips:

• Schedule your garage sale to coincide with a local event that’s likely to generate extra traffic near your home.

• Place the items with the broadest appeal close to the street to grab attention and lure potential buyers up the driveway.

• Sort clothing into categories — by gender, season and age group, for example — and display those items, if possible, on hangers.

• Keep a mirror handy if you’re selling accessories.

• Place fresh batteries in items that require them and keep a power source handy so shoppers can try out electronics and other plug-in appliances.

Finally, don’t forget what follows National Garage Sale Day by just six days: National Thrift Shop Day.
