It's that time boys and girls... 100 day countdown to the start of the Texas High School Football Season

We are 88 days away from the start of the Texas High School Football Season. And today is.....

NATIONAL SPEAK IN COMPLETE SENTENCES DAY

National Speak in Complete Sentences Day is celebrated annually on May 31.

Today’s holiday is a reminder to us of the importance of proper speaking skills and encourages everyone to use complete sentences when talking.

OMG! Wht r u thinkin?

Texting lingo and slang seem to be wanting to take over proper language.  These things do allow us to communicate faster via modern technologies, however our writing and speaking skills might be suffering because of these shortcuts.

Today, even though it may be difficult, follow the guidelines of the day and speak in complete sentences all day long.

NATIONAL SAY SOMETHING NICE DAY

National Say Something Nice Day, an “unofficial” national holiday, originated in Charleston, S.C.

Based on the book, “Say Something Nice: Be a Lifter at Work”, the Mayors of Charleston and North Charleston along with the South Baptist Convention and the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery joined together to establish National Say Something Nice Day.

The purpose of today’s holiday is to counteract bullying and the lack of civility and common courtesy that is growing among people in today’s world.  Hopefully the practice of “saying something nice today” will continue onto all tomorrows.

  So does this mean we won't have to see anything from the crack baby today?

NATIONAL REPEAT DAY

Repeat day, repeat day, is a day to do, is a day to do, things over and over, things over and over, again and again, again and again.

Annually celebrated on June 3, it is National Repeat Day.

When you are getting dressed this morning, put your socks on, take them off and put them on again.  When you start your car to leave for work, turn it off and start it again.  Do you have a favorite restaurant?  Go there for breakfast and then again for lunch.  Do you have a favorite movie you like to watch?  Watch it, then watch it again.  One movie you may want to watch today could  be “Groundhog Day”, a 1993 film in which the main character is affected by a time loop.

Have a great day!   Have a great day!

NATIONAL COGNAC DAY

National Cognac Day is celebrated from coast to coast each year on June 4.

A well-known variety of brandy, Cognac was named after the town of Cognac in France.  It is produced in the wine-growing region which surrounds the town from which it takes its name.

Certain legal requirements must be met within the production for a distilled brandy to bear the name Cognac.   Specific grapes are one requirement along with the need to distill the brandy twice in copper pot stills.  The brandy must also be aged at least two years in French oak barrels from Limousin or Troncais.   Most cognacs are aged much longer than the minimum legal requirement.

There are close to 200 cognac producers.  According to one 2008 estimate, more than 90% of cognac for the U.S. market oomes from only four producers.

The following are cognac-based drinks:

  • Grand Marnier – made from cognac and distilled essence of bitter orange
  • Pineau des Charentes – a sweet aperitif, composed of eau-de-vie and grape must
  • Domaine De Canton – cognac based ginger liqueur
  • Dutch brandy (Vieux) – Dutch imitation cognac, usually containing some cognac

Happy National Cognac Day

NATIONAL GINGERBREAD DAY

Many people are familiar with the “gingerbread house” at Christmas time however there are some delicious gingerbread “bread”, cake, bars, biscuit and cookie recipes that are perfect to be made any time of the year.  Each year on June 5, gingerbread lovers across the nation celebrate National Gingerbread Day, a day that was created to bring attention to gingerbread.

The term “gingerbread” originally referred to preserved ginger, later referring to a confection made up of honey and spices.

Gingerbread is a sweet food that typically uses honey or molasses rather than just sugar and is flavored with ginger.  The gingerbread foods range from a soft, moist loaf cake to something closer to a ginger biscuit.

It is believed that gingerbread was first brought to Europe in 992 by an Armenian monk.  He lived there for 7 years teaching gingerbread cooking to the French priests and Christians until his death in 999.

Sources indicate that in 1444, Swedish nuns were
baking gingerbread to ease indigestion.

In the 17th century, gingerbread biscuits were sold in monasteries, pharmacies and town square farmers markets.   During the 18th century, gingerbread became widely available.

Following are a few “tried and true” gingerbread recipes for you to enjoy!

NATIONAL YO-YO DAY

June 6 annually celebrates a very fun holiday; it is National Yo-Yo Day.  This day celebrates an historic toy.

Today is the perfect day to get out your yo-yo’s and have some fun playing “Sleeper”, “Walk the Dog”, “Shooting the Moon”, “Around the World” or “Hop the Fence”.

The yo-yo is an object that consists of an axle connected to two disks, and a length of string looped around the axle.  It is played by holding the free end of the string, allowing gravity or the force of a throw to spin the yo-yo and unwind the string, then allowing the yo-yo to wind itself back again.  This is called â€œyo-yoing”.

It is believed that the yo-yo was first invented in ancient Greece.  There is a Greek vase painting, from 500 BC, that shows a boy playing with a yo-yo.

The yo-yo was made popular in America when Donald F. Duncan Sr. manufactured the “Duncan Yo-Yo” in the early 1900′s.  The name “Yo-Yo” was first registered as a trademark in 1932.

In 1999, the Duncan Yo-Yo was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong in Rochester, New York. The National Yo-Yo Museum is located in Chico, California.  http://museum.nationalyoyo.org/

Yo-yo’s are enjoyed by people of all ages. NATIONAL YO-YO DAY HISTORY

National Yo-Yo Day, an “unofficial” national holiday is celebrated on June 6 in conjunction with the birth date of Donald Duncan. Donald F. Duncan Sr. (June 6, 1892, Kansas City, Missouri – May 15, 1971, Palm Springs, California)

NATIONAL VCR DAY

Annually celebrated on June 7, it is National VCR Day.  Do you still own a VCR player or do you know someone who does?  Many young people do not know what a VCR player or a VCR tape is.  National VCR Day is dedicated to the videocassette recorder (VCR) .

 In their time, VCR’s were a marvel in technology!

The VCR, which is also known as videocassette recorder or video recorder, is an electromechanical device that records analog audio and analog video from broadcast television or other sources on a removable magnetic tape video cassette and can play back the recording.

The first videocassette recorder was introduced in 1956.  The home videocassette format (VCR) was developed in 1970.

The birth of VCR mass market success boomed in the mid 1970′s and continued on throughout the 1980′s and 1990′s.

In the 1980′s and 1990′s videotapes were widely available for purchase and rental and blank tapes were sold to make recordings.

During this time, the VCR was the main way to watch movies at home and one could create their own personal movie library.

~~~~~~~~~~
Over 10 billion Video Tapes remain today with our recorded memories.  These memories are keepsakes and people keep the tapes for that reason.  It is important to move those memories to a more stable format to preserve them.  Companies like Zoovio, Inc., www.zoovio.com, provide options for both getting them converted to a DVD or stored in an online private vault online to be viewed and shared on internet connected devices including TVs.
NATIONAL UPSY DAISY DAY
National Upsy Daisy Day is celebrated across the nation each year on June 8.  The creator of National Upsy Daisy Day encourages everyone to get up each day “gloriously, gratefully and gleefully.”
Everyday is a gift and if we remember that as we rise each morning, it will help us carry a good attitude throughout the day, whatever the day may bring us.  Life is full of challenges and bumps in the road, it is our attitude that helps us over the bumps and through the challenges to move onward with a smile.
Give it a try today.  Be grateful and thankful for what you do have such as a bed to sleep in, food to eat, friends and family and etc.  Try a smile, see how it feels.  It may surprise you that it feels good on the inside also and how other people will smile back.  You may just brighten up their day!   Upsy Daisy!
NATIONAL UPSY DAISY DAY HISTORY
National Upsy Daisy Day, an “unofficial” National holiday was created by Stephanie West Allen is 2003.  Her desire in creating National Upsy Daisy Day was to make humor, laughter and a positive attitude part of the Upsy Daisy Day way.
     NATIONAL DONALD DUCK DAY
Donald Duck’s first screen debut was on June 9, 1934 in The Wise Little Hen.  Now, 80 years later, we are celebrating NATIONAL DONALD DUCK DAY!
Annually celebrated on June 9, National Donald Duck Day commemorates the birthday of our favorite, well dressed, talking duck…. Donald.   Donald Duck usually wears a sailor suit with a cap and a black or red bow tie and is most famous for his semi-intelligible speech along with his mischievous and irritable personality
Appearing in more films than any other Disney character,  in 2002, TV Guide listed Donald as one of the 50 greatest cartoon characters of all times.
It was in Donald’s second appearance in Orphan’s Benefit that he was introduced to his comic friend, Mickey Mouse.  Soon after, his girlfriend, Daisy Duck, and his nephew’s, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, were also introduced.
Beyond the animation, Donald is primarily known for his appearance in comic books and in newspaper comic strips.
One of Donald Duck’s famous sayings is
“Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy”.
Happy National Donald Duck Day!
NATIONAL BLACK COW DAY
National Black Cow Day is celebrated each year on June 10.  Are you in the mood for ice cream?  We are all familiar with the “Root Beer Float” but did you know that it is also called the “Black Cow”?
A “Black Cow” was originally made with root beer and vanilla ice cream.  Today it is sometimes made with root beer and chocolate ice cream or cola and vanilla ice cream.
Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado, gets the credit for inventing the “Black Cow”  way back in August of 1893.
One night, as Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, was staring out the window and thinking about the line of soda waters that was producing for the citizens of Cripple Creek, he came upon an idea.  The full moon that night that was shining on the snow-capped Cow Mountain reminded him of a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  He hurried back to his bar and added a scoop to the children’s favorite flavor of soda, Myers Avenue Red root beer, tried it, liked it and served it the very next day.  It was an immediate hit.
Wisner named the new creation, “Black Cow Mountain” but the local children shortened the name to “Black Cow“.
Sit back, relax and enjoy a Black Cow today!
NATIONAL CORN ON THE COB DAY
Fresh corn on the cob is a backyard barbecue favorite and summertime treat that people of all ages, across the nation, look forward to as we start the picnic season and therefore June 11 of each year celebrates National Corn on the Cob Day.
A sweetcorn that is picked while the kernels are still tender, corn on the cob is also found to be known as â€œpole corn”, “cornstick”, “sweet pole”, “butter-pop”, or “long maize”.
Boiling, steaming, roasting, frying or grilling are the most common ways of preparing corn on the cob.
Etiquette books state that it is proper to eat corn on the cob by using your fingers to hold the cob on each end.  Specialty skewers are available, and preferred by many, to hold the corn.
Call some friends, neighbors and/or family members, make sure you have an extra salt shaker or two, plenty of butter and lots of napkins, then start the grill and enjoy your corn on the cob with lots of fun and laughter today!
