  1. Keep your eyes on Luke Smith from Crosby at UMHB. He's the kind of guy who will go there and thrive in that offensive system, as well as compete for national championships each year. That program is one of the best in the nation and the facilities are second to none for that level of NCAA. This is a much better landing spot for Luke, even without a scholarship, than getting a scholly to some directional school in Oklahoma.

Coach Toby Belt takes over as AD/Head Football Coach at Tarkington.

Interesting. Don't know much about the guy. Seems to be a nomad with a somewhat troublesome Facebook news feed if I were a parent of a kid in that program. We shall see I guess.

  3. What's going to happen here? I know they were teetering on the verge of eliminating the football program all together a couple of years ago. Does Taylor leaving this late put that consideration back on the table? Especially with the Superintendent retiring and presumably not really putting a ton of effort into hiring the next coach?

I would say the coaches should be a lobbyist for their players with the colleges. Other wise the random contact is just one of many and might not get the attention from said college coach. From all that I have heard college coaches rarely respond to player/parent emails. One would think through the years the HS coach have developed countless relationships throughout the college ranks and he/she could make a call and say "check out this player". That phone call could get a player from the bottom of the stack to the top. Now if you are top ranked then there is not much vouching needed.

Grant it each sport is a little different. First hand account from David Dumars (Joe Dumars brother) asst Bball coach with Mcneese. I was on a college visit with my son and he stated, when they are looking for player(s) they usually contact some scouting services. Jim Hicks with RCS sports here in Houston is who he would call, his scouting service provides intel/recommendations about players to the college coaches. Scouting services have to be certified through the NCAA.

I'll give you another specific example, in roughly 2016 Dayton Bball team got more players scholarships than Crosby and Dayton did not even make the playoffs. Why, their coach was once an asst at Lee College and knew many coaches to contact. Archie Myles went to Ca,, Godfrey went somewhere in Kansas and there was another kid went somewhere else. That year Crosby Bball had ZERO go to college for BBall. Whats even crazier one of the kids had grade issues and didn't play his entire senior season, but still went on to a college.

How can you be in a tenured HS coach (no matter the sports) and don't have anyone you can call at the next level and say check out this player.

The main problem is, many parents can't see that their kid is not college football material and they are dumbfounded when their child doesn't get a scholarship. It's not always a "lack of promotion by coaches" issue, it's a "my kid isn't good enough" problem.

All the deep pockets opened up at Colmesneil......🤣

Also fairly sure WH had a bond overwhelmingly fail recently. Probably was a factor in the decision to move along. Unfortunately, I feel this may signal the end of the WH football program. They were hanging on for dear life as it was anyway.

The final score last year was Newton-30  Anahuac- 14.  Anahuac was held scoreless in the 2nd half. I'm assuming Newton defense was picked apart in the 1st half by Anahuac QB to score the 14pts. or Anahuac QB led the offense in the redzone most of the game but couldn't score. Anahuac must not report game stats or game videos anywhere because none can be found yet on the young gunslinger QB from Anahuac from last year.

Search Anahuac Sports Live on youtube. Should have all of last years games on there. See for yourself.

Chad Taylor, is from "Liberty" which is 7 miles down the road.  That was my point. Ha!

Very clever of you sir. Honest question though, why would Taylor take this job? Seems like quite the dumpster fire in Hardin right now and he is certainly taking a pay cut to make the move considering he is losing the AD title. I heard what you said earlier about 2025, but with the current state of Hardin athletics and the parents who damn near revolted this year because the coaching was so poor in all sports except volleyball, he may not survive in that job until 2025!

Last 2 Coaches have been OC’s at schools and he beat out approx 50 applicants during financial distress in the district.  Most in this area didn’t know who he was me included, but he’ll get a nice job somewhere because his resume speaks for itself.  You have to forgive me but I don’t watch much high school football in the Corpus Christi area.  Crosby will hire the next guy and life will go on.  I just think Crosby could be a place where someone comes for 3-4 years and then takes the next step in their career.

Man I certainly hope that isn't the case. Crosby could be a destination school for coaches if they'd get out of the coaches way and let him do his thing. Allowing Prieto to resign right now is risky. Maybe they do go find the next OC savant and stay as relevant as they've been, or maybe they miss badly and fall into absolute obscurity due to the move to the next division up. Time will tell. This superintendent will make or break herself with this hire.

I think you are right. I think the young man would absolutely excel and have a higher profile at 3A Anahuac, but in 5A he will be asked to carry Ned to some degree, and its doubtful Ned makes deep runs with or without him. There is a significant speed and talent difference between 3A and 5A ball. With all the hype and speculation that's gone on since last year this was already baked in. Sometimes the best move is one you DON'T make, so I hope he doesn't look back in a few years and wonder what "might have been" had he stayed.

I hear you, and what you are saying is true, but there was also a significant speed and talent difference between Hardin 8th grade football and 3A varsity football, and he navigated that pretty well. Let's just wait and see before we start to bury the kid on this board. I like the conversations also, but I can't help but think about the potential of the kid in question reading these posts and how that might affect him. We all love this sport and are passionate about our teams, but we are also all passionate about supporting all kids from SETX to succeed on every night except the one when they oppose our city! lol. Good luck Coach and Son. We're all rooting for your success.

The takes on here are pretty funny.  Nobody knew who Prieto was before he hired in at Crosby.  Go back and look at that those threads.  He was successful because he had really good athletes and he wasn’t afraid to play them on both sides of the ball.  Last year was the least athletic they’ve looked probably in about 12 years since I’ve been watching them.  5AD1 compared to 5AD2 Crosby was outmatched last year up front.  Whose gonna be the next Coach, I have no clue, but come the fall they’ll strap them on and line em up against CE King. Coaches move on sometimes forced or  sometimes for personal/family reasons.  Life goes on, Crosby will get plenty of interest because they have players.

What you meant to say was you didn't know who Prieto was before he hired in at Crosby. He was well known as a great OC and had a ton of success at CC Vets.

    NED BARRIER: 6 years; 23-38-0
    2016  Wallis Brazos        5-6-0 F
    2017  Wallis Brazos        4-6-0 F
    2018  Wallis Brazos        7-5-0 T
    2019  Caney Creek         2-8-0
    2020  Hardin--                 2-7-0
    2021  Hardin--                 3-6-0

His best work was during his first stint as a head coach at Brazos. Caney Creek was Caney Creek and the Hardin program was beginning to show signs of life in the lower levels while he was there. You'd have to go back to before his HC records to really see the impact he had. He was at Jasper for quite a few years prior to taking the Brazos job, had stints at Cleveland, Hull-Daisetta and a few others sprinkled in over the years.

Allegedly the OC from last year found out that he wasn’t the OC this coming year when he saw the job posted…allegedly

And he and the AD haven’t talked face to face since…allegedly

I thought it was said that Barrow didn't have an OC last year.

This isn’t college. They aren’t recruiting replacements. They aren’t searching a non-existent Texas High School Transfer Portal for new playmakers. Barrier could get hired on his credentials without bringing his son. Is his son a bonus? Yes, but he isn’t the reason his father is or isn’t a candidate.
As for confidence I will say this, the Anahuac kids had no problem with a freshman coming in and taking the starting role…

This. The son is a bonus. Coach Barrier is one of the brightest offensive minds in the area and he is just now getting his due. Trust and believe, he isn't getting jobs just because his son is in tow. His merits stand on their own.

A name you are all very familiar with.  From 7 miles down the road.

Well that narrows it down to two cities, Liberty and Daisetta. Can't imagine they'd be able to lure Lackey out of Liberty so that only leaves one man standing.
