I understand what you were doing, I just felt like your rebuttal did not hold any water. You actually make his point though. The "fetus", as you call it, or "life" as I call it (heart beats, takes in nourishment, reacts to outside stimulus) are in the same predicament. If either are neglected ("by not taking care of it") then both will die. The two only differ as a matter of geography. One's in the womb and one is out...that's it.

What if AFTER the child is born, they think there situation would be better without the newborn?... Is it ok for them to take its life? I mean, it's best for them after all.

I can appreciate that. But, of course, that’s not the real issue here. It should not and cannot be used as birth control. Ending a life is ending a life. Dice it up any way you want.
